| I get that they kind of have to exist with the original Japanese version due to cultural differences and such. But, most people in the west are hugely bothered and annoyed by all the anime grunting. So what I don’t understand is why anime dubs still keep these noises in rather than do the responsible thing and just mute them. Not to mention, in a lot of cases, the English dubs make the anime grunting sound way worse. Final fantasy vii remake’s grunting was so bad in the English dub that there had to be a mod to remove them and a lot of players preferred the Japanese version instead. I don’t get why they don’t just remove these noises. |
Because onomatopoeia and interjections are part of language and specially part of anime's ways of literary effects for auditory impact. |

| If they did, the "I never watch dubs anyway" purists would complain about dubs butchering the material and engaging in xenophobic cultural whitewashing. Damned if you don't, damned if you do. But also, if those grunts are produced where characters' are speaking onscreen, that's a mouth flap that needs to be matched. So those grunts are needed to avoid a "mouth moving, no sound produced" mismatch. |
