While reviews for a piece of media should not impact your own opinion on it, I am curious to know about what people are disliking about this show? The art style is one of the best I have seen in an anime, the characters are fun so far (only two episodes have been released as of writing this), the magic system is interesting, the dynamic of machines used for spells being common and restricted to only some individuals while handcrafted magic is possible yet not taught is fascinating, and the story is only just beginning! The show strikes me as similar to Little Witch Academia and The Owl House which are all great to be compared to!

I had the same thought, maybe it's because the show doesn't seem original and has some cliches, but the los score is still very weird to me.

A lot of other good shows also seem to be getting low score, like konoku inu and trillion game but I have one thing very similar about these, they feel very old school type of anime, which I personally love, but I guess most people are not fan of cause how different they are

It's just gives off that vibe, similar to stuff like zero no tsukaima and stuff, well I guess that should not be too surprising since it is the same studio, but it's still kinda of that vibe

There's nothing new about this. These type of cute anime usually tend to get a low score by a default. Most people simply don't find them anything special. It's the same thing with most CGDCT, idol, all-female sports/ecchi anime as well. They often get something between ~5-6.7/10.

I have a theory, then.

In movies, I feel as if there's been some "Marvel generation" for some time, people who just like movies with flashing stuff, big CGI scenarios and/or big fights, and more serene, "movies that makes you think", are seen as boring.

Maybe there are those on MAL who are kind of like that, the "Mappa generation", just for naming sake.
They like more action-based animes, specially big projects like Kimetsu no Yaiba, Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man (and Dandadan, to put something from this season), and find cute stuff like this to be boring and unappealing.

But hey, that's a theory. An anime theory

Adding to the theory above, the majority of anime viewers follow shonen and seinen shows almost exclusively, but sites like MAL encourage those people to watch more shows to get their stats up. So they stumble into shows that they find ‘lame and girly’. I believe that a lot of the 1,2 and 3 ratings are from those who watch one episode and drop.
My personal rating is 8 for this btw, may adjust as it goes on.

If the show upholds its current quality and the characters/story proceed to grow, then I think it will be received better like Little Witch Academia. We’ll see though and I hope it does well enough to tell its entire story.

IMO it's idiotic to give show low score then drop it (after 1-2 episodes especially). But such is the world we live in. You'll find idiot vegans giving 1 star reviews to stake houses for not having salad option for instance. Anyways, this is norm for MAL too, nothing we can do about it.

i usually love pastel style but this anime just feels low effort. also story-wise so far it's just a worse version of little witch academia. regardless of this I'm still enjoying the show, would rate it in the 7s.

I love the art style, but both the plot and the characters aren't particularly remarkable so far. Good or bad writing becomes more evident in the long run, so we'll see.

Still, 6.52 is extremely low; it's the score I'd expect if something like this had terrible art and animation.

In addition to what has already been said above, most of which I agree with, it's worth pointing out that it also seems to be the case that most of the non-mainstream non big-name anime are almost always quickly settling into a score somewhere in the six range, like 6.4, 6.7, etc. early on in the season. And then eventually the total score will be adjusted when the series has completed its airing run, and sometimes stay at or close to the same, go down, or go up. But usually it's go up for series like these because the low scores of those who stopped watching early on and rated the series super low are dropped off and disregarded by comparison to the weight of others'.

I first noticed this trend in the spring season of this year though of so many of the seasonals I was watching, which weren't mainstream huge titles, falling into the 6s almost immediately and it continued firmly through the summer and now the autumn season. But for all I know that could have been the state of affairs for a lot longer than that, going back however many years. It only started to really stand out to me that recently.

The recent amount of ridiculous low scores for ongoing seasonals that are barely up to 4 episodes kinda reminds me of the whole Chihayafuru 3 fiasco back in 2018, while it was airing and maybe even a while after it ended it had a 7 with some really low decimals, absurd but it was fixed later on for the better. Maybe this'll get fixed in the future if there is some sort of interference.

Outside of the very pretty art, everything about the story, characters, and world so far isn't anything special. There's just nothing special going on here.

It's pretty middling fare, so I gave it a 5, since that's "average".

Trillion Game has the same thing going on.

Smaller new shows like this are getting bombarded with bad ratings, but these don't have the hardcore fanbase to prop up the score like Love Live Superstar Season 3 which is still somewhat affected by this. The algorithm is just bad.

@MR-GRAYv2 That situation is the reason why I hate vinland fans in general.

Who knows to be honest....

But in the words of that old Celine Dion song, "That's The Way it Is"....! Albeit, I expect the score to grow as the show continues.

You know, and even if it DOESN'T, unless a show upon ending has like a 2 or a 3 - something you can recognize as OBVIOUSLY TERRIBLE; Remember, all the scores are subjective. Simply people's opinions and you know what they say about opinions...Some shows on here rated like a 5, or just barely 6 have turned out to be great watches!

So again, don't let scores on here get you TOO down. 🙂
