Drum Island introduced us to a bunch of new things, like the Will of D, Ace and the first mention of Blackbeard. It also set the stage for Luffy and Blackbeard as opposites of each other. In more ways than we could know back then. It turned out Ace was a brother to both Luffy and Blackbeard (as fellow son and member of the Whitebeard family). It was also later revealed that Blackbeard also carries a D. In Drum Island they both caused chaos and kicked out the rulers, Wapol and co. Blackbeard left a trail of destruction and hopelessness (even robbed the country of its name), while Luffy inspired the people to start anew as the Sakura Kingdom. Oh, more importantly, in Mock Town we are shown one liked the pies better and the other whatever they were drinking.

Okay so we got the typical light vs darkness theme going on with Luffy and Blackbeard. So what's Imu and how do they enter the picture? The answer to both questions is nothing, and they were always there. If this sounded confusing, picture the sun and a black hole, now remove the sun and the black hole. That's Imu! Or, as the saying goes, hate isn't the opposite of love, indifference is.

Imu has been tied to nothingness, or rather, to emptiness in a couple of ways. What sits on an empty throne? That's right. They are also responsible for the Void Century. During Ennies Lobby, the Judicial Island is shown as floating on air. The suggestion then was that the World Government's justice had no basis, but now it can be interpreted as being predicated on Imu. And lastly, the name Nerona Imu in kanji alludes to "God Buddha". Emptiness being central to Buddhism (known as Sunyata and symbolized by a hand-drawn circle, which I find cool and relevant because the sun and black holes are also circular).

How could Imu's emptiness contrast with Luffy's and Blackbeard's wills? Luffy's idea of freedom is warm and empathetic, while Blackbeard's is cold and selfish. Imu's all for the absence of freedom; For Luffy, a crew is a group of friends and, for Blackbeard, it's a group with aligned agendas. For Imu there's no friends nor aligned agendas, everyone's subordinate to their will, unknowingly; Luffy and Blackbeard leave a trail in their wake, in very different ways. Imu, however, has stayed hidden in place for centuries; Luffy inspires people to follow their dreams, whereas Blackbeard steals people of their dreams (metaphorically, in the form of devil fruits). Imu, on the other hand, might want to stop dreaming altogether, maybe by submerging the world and making devil fruits (i.e., dreams) obsolete? This is just my interpretation of Imu at this point anyway.
