I don't usually give shows a rating below 6 or 7, so 5 for me is pretty bad
@Suryaaps Do you rate like this because you believe you havent seen many bad shows, or because your a generous reviewer?

I'm kind with scoring so I can't be relevant, but I would say when I can't decide between meh, fine (6) or bad (4).

@AkuyaSama both I'd say... I don't pick shows that I know I wouldn't like that's why none yet has made me drop it. But sometimes, a show that's being talked about or is recommended to me ends up being a bad watch so I give that a lower rating.

5 for me is an anime with an interesting premise but it fell short in various ways, rather that was the writing, character development, or overall blandness. Sometimes I'll finish a 5 anime and other times I'll drop it if I'm bored at that particular time lol

I've had this account for a long time and when I was younger I was not very picky and would give most anime's a high rating. Now, however, I give out fives a lot. Mostly to animes that did make me smile, but I felt like it had nothing new to offer. For instance, I have the anime "The Sacrificial princess and the Beast King" a five. It was a fun watch but it was clearly a neat concept poorly executed. It was fun to see a couple so obsessed with each other equally, but at the same time we saw very little personality from either because they were just gushing about each other anytime they were on screen.

Basically I suppose what I'm trying to say is: 5 stars to me means there are almost just as many downs as there are ups. These animes didn't make me want to rip my eyes out but I was counting down the episodes wanting more to just finish it than anticipation for what comes next. They mostly have need premises but lacked substance outside of that.

@cornonacob perfectly put I feel the same. Most of the time I don't rate animes I drop though, because I don't want to give it a grade if I didn't watch it all

The way that I see it, a score of 5 means that the anime is just okay/average overall. For me, this could mean two different things: either the anime was very average in most/all aspects, or, the goods were really good, and the bads were really bad, and they both end up cancelling each other out, leaving you with a score of 5. The latter reason is way less common than the first reason from what I've seen though.

5/10 can mean one of three things for me:

  • A show that I didn't think was bad or good.

  • A show which I still at least somewhat enjoyed but not really that much.

  • A show which had a lot of good qualities, but also a lot of bad qualities.

A 5 would be completely middle of the road, mediocre, etc...
What point is there in watching something mediocre and boring? If a show gives me an equal number of good and bad feelings, it's a 5. Why would I waste time on a show that doesn't give net positive feelings? So it's just the equivalent of gray sludge.
When that sludge turns poisonous and I actively dislike a show, it goes lower than a 5. When I have more positive feelings towards a show than negative, it's above a 5.

5 means the show was boring and not really worth watching. For context, just watching some YouTube videos would probably be a 6-7 on my enjoyment scale. This means that for a show to be worth my time, it would need to be at least a 7, otherwise I could be just as entertained by watching some YouTube videos.

Just plain, nothing too special but it didn't hurt me to watch. Usually happens with seasonals I watch if I find an anime in the wild and I think its a five I'd usually drop it.

5 means nothing to me. That's mid rating.

I agree if I don't like an anime I just drop it and don't put it in my list. I've completed a few that I probably wouldn't have, but for the opportunity to write a nasty review; and I think 7 is my default rating (if it was entertaining enough to get me to finish and I liked it but thought it was just mid, then it gets a 7)
Scoring less than a 6 is for those I consider less than good. I usually put those below 6 as 'Not Recommended'.

A 5 from me means I didn't have any strong feelings about it one way or the other at all. I didn't enjoy it, but it didn't do enough to make me hate it either, so solidly middle of the road unremarkable.

5 for me means it's bad, but I managed to watch through it and does have some redeeming quality like the art or music.

I rarely have anything lower than 5 on my list cause any lower means so bad I'll drop it, unless it's a shitty movie.

hm..its tough because some anime i've rated 5-7 or so are anime that I constantly rewatch from time to time (usually nostalgic for me) while anime i've rated a 10 I never go back to. Personally for me its like admitting that something I really enjoy may have average-below average plot lines/characters etc. and i'm not delusional about it. I would hate to rate something high just because I have nostalgia goggles on for it.

5 is mediocre/average/neutral. I don't really care about it.

I may finish it if I have nothing to do, but I often decide to drop them as well.

It means I don't like the show, but I didn't really dislike it either. If someone were to put it on the tv, I'd probably ask that they change it to something else, but I wouldn't be annoyed if they kept it on the tv.

Of average or middling quality, as it's described in the dropdown rating menu here. Anything 5 or above is worth watching, way I see it.

Between
- Something I kinda like but I think is pretty bad, or
- Something I don't like but I acknowledge are quite decent, or
- Something I don't have any strong feelings for (just average)

Either way it's something I don't regret watching, but won't miss either

my rating is not based on quality of sound, animation, story and so on. For me the rating system is so stupidly simple becuse im a stupidly simple man. For me the rating is how much of a good time did I have watching it. So a 5 for me is I was kind of entertained and not bored to death.

So to make it simple 1= bored and gave up and did something else or watched something else. 5= It was okey had a decent time watching but I would never rewatch. 10= I had a great time with a big smile or allot of laughing and made me feel good so I will proboly rewatch it now and then when ever I feel down.

What do you consider an average anime, most anime have score around 7, not around 5

I'm not generous with my ratings but I won't say it's too hard to get a score above 5 from me, if I don't like the show and would give it a bad rating, most of the times I just delete it from my list and I don't give it a rating

to me average anime is the one that makes no impression on me, or only negative ones - it is boring, disgusting...

so the question stands, what does anime you rated a 5 mean to you?

Personally scoring an Anime a 5 means it's so average to me that I probably would have had a better time picking up something at random to watch and it would have likely have been more entertaining just going in blindly to view it.

it means it wasnt quite bad enough to drop. Or at least it didnt get bad until I've already watched most of it so I figured I may as well finish it.

A 5 for me is mixed feelings. Mostly when aspects of the shows that I did enjoy were just overshadowed by the bad and mainly prevented me from liking it.

Mid. People need to stop adapting video game journalist mindsets and use their common sense when we talking about a 5/10.

5 out of 10 is when some parts in the anime were funny and entertaining but the rest didnt catch me at all and were disappointing. And the animation has to be awful. If the job of the studio is done poorly, they are not gonna get more then 6 out of 10 from me. Especially if I already know the Manga and know the potential!

It means mediocre, not something I can say bad but also not something I look forward to see either.

Naturally we all want to see something good, not mediocre :)

For most cases it was a snooze fest - either a show I fell asleep while I was watching or incredibly boring. Might have plain characters, world building or plot as well. In some cases, it can also mean it was a show I was very hyped for but for reasons mentioned above it didn't follow. Last reason I might have to rate a show 5 is that it's just bad but I had fun watching it - some of my guilty pleasures could be find in there too.
