High school starts for all...but Hajime has trouble making friends. Though initially that both Takeda-sensei and Akine chides him for being part of the going-home club, there is one person that he mentions that they should look out for: the violin genius that is Nao Saeki, winning competitions one after another, and serving as the Orchestra Club's advisor on a recommendation.

While shopping for violin strings in a music shop, having to see pictures of his father still reels bad memories. The fellow school competitor Ichiro Yamada still recognizes Hajime, though he came to get his cello fixed to be ready for the club. Hearing Nao Saeki's name again, and Hajime is even more intrigued of a club that Akine will have some trouble dealing with. And when Yamada drags him to see both Akine and Haru, the latter apologizing when she fled away from him, it's just a case of shyness, though most friends are made from competitions when they were young, still remembered to this day, well, except for Hajime which he is in a blank state.

Checking out the Orchestra Club or not, the Senpais are in prep mode, because there are a lot of 1st Year applications. The 2-week tryouts announced from the club's president of 3rd Year Mari Tateishi, and while the strings section is under the tutelage of 3rd Year Sou Harada playing the main 1st Violin (and also Concert Master) and 2nd Year Chika Yonezawa playing the accompaniment 2nd Violin. The 1st Years split into beginners and veterans, and there he is: Nao Saeki. Making an example of his playing, he's paired together with Hajime, being the only other veteran male to go against each other, using Antonio Vivaldi's The Four Seasons -Spring- as a test and set piece for the next competition. This'll perfectly gauge the two's play, with Saeki playing the main while Hajime anchors the accompaniment, knowing full well that this song is a no-brainer for him.

Get ready for the intense music battle of Hajime vs. Nao Saeki, and this'll test the waters of the 1st Years's males going forward.

As much as I liked the episodes before this, I felt this episode was dragged on too much. Lots of 'spacing out' parts, staring off the distance and hesitation scenes that was probably put in to pace the story to be contained in one episode.
Maybe it's not that bad; bad it feels unnecessary but then again this is a 24-episode cour, so they need stretch the chosen arcs they need to adapt within those said number of episodes.
It makes me look forward to the next one though.
Also that sudden injection of cell-shaded CGI is still kind of jarring but I am looking forward to the quality of the music they will be using for this part.

Finally walked into the orchestra club this episode, but ended on a cliffhanger before a performance. Hopefully the duet is played in full and animated in detail next week.

However I couldn't help but notice the 3D animation when Saeki was playing the first few bars. I really hope the full scene next episode doesn't look too bad. I checked Episode 1 again, and Aono's performance in the opening scene still looked very good and 2D-animated. Let's hope that wasn't a one-off occasion for the premiere.

Regardless of the CGI, Am I the only one that kind of has a problem with the lightening of this show.
It's unfortunate a more reliable studio didn't pick this manga up cause I'm enjoying the story.

Honestly in not usually the type to criticize CGI in anime it’s usually not as bad as people say it is and here it’s not really terrible but I’ll admit I’d did take me out of the story when it’s suddenly changed like that. For anime about music I am honestly okay with stills and closeups I don’t need detailed animation….

On a whim, I decided to watch this episode as my first....perhaps some more story telling elements would have passed, maybe a performance time?

Hibike Euphonium casts a huge shadow over this show

It certainly lacks the dynamism of Hibike.

Looks quite power point at times. Alot of stiff stillness in the animation....like you see just the arms move, or the mouth, not the whole body movements you see in KyoAni.
Lacks the visual art flair of KyoAni too, alot of bland looking, single colouring, it reminds me of anime made in the 2000s.

At least that brief snippet of the orchestra playing, looks awkward CG, at least there are plenty of movements from alot of the players

Pace seems slow this episode....lets hope they dont draw out this exam next episode.

The emotions isnt conveyed well at all, because of the dated and stiff animation style.....is Saeki, he seems bored...but looks like it was implied he had some troubles, which perhaps explains his mood? Or is he bored because he is too over-powered??, but he is also aware of Aono's talent....like serendipitously they have been placed to compete head on......I think Aono is nervous? At least they conveyed that he is intimidated, but I'm having difficulty connecting with the MC.......I'm trying to feel sympathetic.

I'll chase up the other 3 episodes and follow for the next few....I love music anime so lets see hw this goes.

I'll reserve judgement for the Saeki's performance....if that was cel shaded 3D CG, it certainly looks good....alot of dynamism and nuance...then its back to standard 2d powerpoint animations lol...sigh.... I'm now disappointed further, as to why couldnt they use full CG for all their characters throughout the whole episode instead and throughout the whole show????It would also help hugely with conveying the body language of the characters, since looks like alot of the drama is going to be the character interactions.... It was rough with Unite Up, when their 3D mocap performances was so good....the 2D animations sucked; and D4DJ and Trigun Stampede had gold standard 3D CGI for their character animations all the way through.....

After all, this is 2023, not 2003.

Sad to admit, Kizuna AI has better animation quality.

Yes, there are noticeable stretches and quiet pauses between the dialogue there, from when Aono and Seaki are pitched against each other, like trying to stretch to fit the time, and reach the cliffhanger. It got annoying.

No..... why would they do this? It was just for a moment, but cgi was so jarring.

Aono is so nervous for some reason... but I'm sure he'll be okay.

Unfortunately, I think ultimately the CGI performances is going to let the show down, as the manga has some brilliant artwork during the performances. They may well resort to stills. I wouldnt be surprised.

I like the story though. Romance:

I'm pleased it's also very SOL, I feel quite immersed in their lives while reading the manga, prob depicts it a slightly bit better than Hibike, but it all depends on how Nippon Animation portrays it

This anime started out okay, peaked at episode 2, which was really good, and then went downhill with the CGI orchestra performance and all the shit production. This looks like shit, completely ruins the mood of every performance, it's downright offensive. I'll be lowering the score to a 3/10, but it feels more like a 1-2/10 at this point. Such a shame.

This is unacceptable for a 2023 anime, we're back to PS2 era it seems. What the fuck is going on with this industry...?

I think it's a little stupid that all Saeki had to play was 6 bars of "Spring" for everyone in the room to determine he was a great violin player.
