Long time Kancolle fan here, been looking forward to this season since it was first announced years ago!

I thought this was a great first episode. I love the mood change in comparison to the first season, and the historical connections to real life events are neat to see and appreciated. It was also nice to see a bunch of different Kanmusu we haven’t seen animated yet, and I even got to see one of my favorites - Abukuma! I also thought the animation was really well done and looked great. The OP/ED are certainly departures from the first season, but it makes sense given the mood of this season.

A shame this will only be 8 episodes, but at least we are getting some more Kancolle content! Looking forward to the rest of the episodes.

If anyone is interested, there’s a neat video on YouTube that gives some perspective about real-life events that happened during World War II using Kancolle characters, including Shigure and her fleet during The Battle of Surigao Strait: https://youtu.be/tUsHOKW6akY

So this will be Leyte gulf battle.
Obviously since it's 1944 already mood of the show couldn't be that shiny, after all this is the last big Japan operation on the sea during ww2 whilte it was kinda obvious at this point that they are losing badly.
Interesting note - this fleet being a "suicide fleet" is unconfirmed version of "unexplainable" behaviour of it during battle.

Does the part before Opening song (Part with Shigure and another Air craft carrier) refer to any historic event?

Why they so afraid of adding real admiral to their Kancolle series?

he is gonna be the most incompetent useless Admiral to grace the anime scene
japan run out of good commander in 1942-43
1944 is just pain
they don't even have a single carrier left
NOT EVEN 1

Overall, season 2 episode 1 is more subtle and rather interesting than s1 e1.
The OP was calm and I kinda liked that.
That said, im more excited for more Kongou moments!

I'm honestly not sure if they'll go for the beat every adversity route this time, the previous season already halfway through I could tell they'll somehow beat midway, but here the tone is very gloomy and Shigure doesn't seem to be like Fubukj. I really like this begining the overall animation seems to be a huge improvement from the first season (though still not battle scenes to compare).
Since they didn't have much problem portraying war trauma in the movie will they do some good ol' survivor's guilt?

It certainly looks pretty. I noticed a lot of attention to detail. And the overall quite depressed feeling that seems to be present comes as a welcome change from the generally positive and light hearted first series. I am looking forward to future episodes.

I really like the start up scene and inclusion of fairies in the anime compared to the older one

Yes, the Ryuho was attacked by 4 Grumman TBF Avengers on 20 June 1944 during the Battle of the Philippine Sea. She sustained only minor damage.
19 - 20 June 1944:
Launch strikes against American TF 58 on 19 June. On the following day, at 1730 Mobile Fleet is attacked by enemy carrier planes. RYUHO is part of Force `B' comprised of JUNYO and HIYO and screened by NAGATO and MOGAMI and eight destroyers. At 1810 RYUHO comes under attack from four bomb-loaded TBFs from USS ENTERPRISE and suffers slight damage from near-misses, but her navigating and fighting capability is not impaired. (The damage was light enough to not be remarked upon in Ugaki's diary which does mention the single hit on CHIYODA.)

I like the art style. The girls all look so beautiful! Especially Fusou. She was my favorite BB when I used to play Kancolle. She's so hot!
Oh, this is based on the Battle of Surigao Strait, where Fusou and the others are doomed to sink.
Yamato and the rest of her escorts looked so badass in the mist.
Those faeries are so cute!
