just because something is popular, you don't have to like it. it's okay to have your own tastes and preferences.

Don’t worry I agree with you like others said it’s everyone’s own preferences but typically this movie if you ask me is good but nothing fantastic but to a non anime fan it could relate to a “Disney movie” so it attracts both crowds. I have talked to many non anime fans and they think the movie is wonderful but haven’t watched any anime so they don’t know there is much better out there.

You yourself stated the prime reason why this movie is popular. It feels like a Disney fantasy, that's the reason why it got so popular back in the day.
As for the movie being great, I would say it's pretty good, not great though, atleast not the greatest. There's better movies than Spirited Away but I'm sure it was great for its own time.

Nostalgia is a huge factor for most people, I watched it for the first time a few months ago and I personally enjoyed the art, music, and animation. I prefer Princess Mononoke over this though. Is it overrated? Yes. Still a fun watch though.

for me its mostly nostalgia because i grew up with this movie but apart from that the ghibli art is always on point, sound design is great and i personally really like the story, characters are kinda meh but everything else is objectively amazing

I personally grew up with this movie. The plot and details are very creative and the spirits and stuff are really cool, plus the dynamics and friendships make me really happy. Generally it was a really good movie from my perspective but if you're just gonna judge it because it feels like a Disney movie then I don't really want to get into depth abt it

Thematically dense with many powerful messages relating to mindless consumerism and the negative effects of Capitalism in Japan/Globally. It's WAY more relevant today than when the movie first came out as well so it's aged like fine wine in my opinion. The directing, pacing and production quality is stellar across the board so I think it deserves to be considered one of the greatest films of all time.

There's a saying, "Different strokes for different folks". Yes, it's a popular movie and many have enjoyed it, doesn't mean that you have to as well. And if you didn't, then just write a review about it. What's the point of making a thread here? I doubt you actually want to know about "what's so great in the movie".

I need you people to stop saying there's no substance in this film and comparing it to a Disney film. Disney has never made a film this thoughtful and important in it's entire backlog. Please respect Miyazaki and studio Ghibli, this is embarrassing. If you didn't understand the film, just take 5 minutes to look into it and you will realize it's very on the nose with it's ideas.

For me Spirited Away together with Howl's Moving Castle are the greatest movies if all time. It's okay if you don't like it and I don't think you would change your mind even if I'd listed all the things I love about Spirited Away. And btw, I love everything about it. You can Ask everyone what's so great about it but if you're don't feel it now, you probably never will.

The animation and fantastical setting are the selling points. If you ask me, once you look past those two points the movie is pretty mid.

It’s an impressive feat of animation with a story that deeply impacted the young children that happened to watch it at the time it came out (or were exposed to it by parents or something).
It’s a very “right place at the right time” film when it comes to an adult perspective but ultimately, it is just a fairy tale. Some stories don’t have to be any more than that.

phenomenal animation considering it came out in 2001 and a wholesome story, everyone has their personal preference but maybe you're just not used to these types of movies yet i wouldn't have appreciated it as much as i did a few years ago it is pretty old but great for it's time like a lot of anime, just think about it that shit came out almost 21 years ago.

All depends. I thought that spirited away was good. But other movies by the studio are pretty overrated. Like my neighbor Totoro.

Ghibli has done the same phenomenal animation since 1988

I liked the story because it all flowed really well and was fun. Also, the ending didn’t suck for once. It was a meh ending, but it also didn’t suck. Animation is awesome and I loved the character No Face. Really fun and enjoyable, didn’t dislike anything

Personally I just liked the world building. Miyazaki does a great job at that but the story seems really undercooked. Still it's amazing how the movie kept me engaged even with a weak story. I guess it's all about that Wow Factor, the feeling of getting transported to a fantasy land where you can't expect what you'll see next. The movie might not be his best work but still I did enjoy it a shit ton. It's a Solid 4/5 from me

This movie is a instant classic, this is not a Disney movie. Disney did used to own to distribute rights in North America at one point that’s why back in the day the DVDs and Blu-rays were labeled as a Disney movie. This movie is worth the hype. If you don’t like it, then don’t watch it.

I can’t believe someone would ask a question like this.

I think that the style and soundtrack are what make it so popular. Not only does it feel like your watching a genuine Japanese film but there’s a sense of nostalgia to it. I dont think that I can explain it other than having an aura about it

It's not about being a Disney movie . This kovie is about 2p years old and at that time it had good animations which was ahead of its time . Hayak Miyazaki is also worldwide popular . So people thinks this of a masterpiece because it was made by Miyazaki + great animations . Don't know about the story tho . Seemed completely overrated with a simple story

Complex Stories are basically sleeping pills . Helps to get some sleep .

I'm not surprised it's popular. The animation is genuinely creative and gorgeous, and in a deeply memorable manner. The music is good and fits the movie well.

Now is it an overrated film? Yeah, absolutely. Narratively, it's an absolute mess. Miyazaki tried to write a fairy tale, but didn't understand the main point behind them. The script is amateurish, filled with deus ex machina, magic MacGuffins, and even some bad plot holes.

But a lot of viewers can ignore (or don't even notice) that in favor of how deeply beautiful the movie is, and that's especially true if they were very young when they saw "Spirited Away".
