First off, a bit of context.

My brother is slightly younger than me (I am 17, while he is 15, but he turns 16 in November). He is mainly into Marvel and Star Wars, but he also likes animated movies quite a lot, too. However, for whatever reason, he has never gotten into anime. Yeah, he watched Ponyo, Totoro, and a bit of Star Wars: Visions, but aside from that, nothing else.

As stellar as Spirited Away, everytime I suggest it to him, he always says no. Perhaps I am kind of a jerk, because I feel like I am forcing it on him.

However, I really want to show him what a masterpiece of animation it is. Plus, with me going off to college next year, watching movies with my bro won't be as regular as it is.

So, people of the forums, I ask you this question: How can I convince my brother, who isn't much of an anime fan, to watch Spirited Away with me?

Works for my sister

Bribery normally works. That how I get my brother to watch stuff with me. I tell him in exchange I’ll watch one of his favorite shows

Show him some pics and give him a brief summary......what a coincidence, i watched it with my sis yesterday.... I'm 17 and she is 10......I had to explain to her almost everything, but she laughed a lot and amused to see pigs, monsters and spirits.

Tell him U will treat him something later if he agrees to watch it with u.

Btw, imo the animation, music, Art and subtle details are mind blowing, as a movie released in 2001, it's way better than Kyoto/Mappa/Ufotable tbf.......and the story is also decent, the magical world was amazing BUT the story was rushed at the end.....ik they can't make it longer, but they could've cut some scenes and made it 15mins longer.......so I don't think it deserve the hype it gets,, just because the story, pacing and ending kinda felt off........but it's a solid 8/10.

If you can't convince him with "it's good", then tell him "it's bad".
Called reverse treatment.

Just tell him it would mean a lot to you if you both could watch it together before you go away. Also tell him to pick one of his favorite movies and you’ll watch it with him.

if he really don't wanna watch it so let him go even if you convince him somehow he will watch it with 0 or 5% concentration because he is forced, not curious to watch it.

I think if he's not already interested in Spirited Away, he probably won't like it. That's the kind of movie it is.

Have you tried breaking down and crying in order to guilt trip him into watching it? If that doesn't work you could always get a parent involved or threaten to take away something he loves.

If these options seem kind of mean to you maybe its best to respect the fact that he doesn't want to watch anime with you.

1. Move away from home
2. Go into a tunnel
3. Eat food and become a pig
The right mindset when watching an anime is hoping that it will break your top 10

Sorry, I didn't read your suggestion carefully enough. I saw what Jay_Brief said and thought that you also watch your sister's favorites. I try it all the time, but it never works.
I never bought my brother a bribe. That sort of thing isn't in my nature.

I always used those words to invite my sister to watch a movie or anime together. And it usually works.

let me tell u my way of convincing people to watch smth , instead of telling them , in my case i will use my laptop or phone and with speakers on , watch near him with loud sound and place the screen where he can also see this , even tho he is not watching with you he might check what ur watching , ( remember to play the beautiful scenes like no face getting bigger that scene might attract him to know abt what that black thing is ) ,then he might come and ask u to play from start and watch together 🤝🏼

Telling them it's good and if it does not work, then it won't matter what you do.

My bother has watched a few anime and I recomment similar Anime to him all the time, but he does not and probably never will watch them.
But I don't think that's a big deal.

imo, I think I would have made a deal, if he takes his time to watch my favorite movie, I would promise him to watch his movie too. If he says yes, at the same time I'll tell him what I like about it and what he likes or not to find out about his tastes and suggest other animated films that look like him.
After all, if he really isn't interested, I won't force him, of course.

If people don't like it you cant make them and even if you do you will probably ruin it for them and they won't like it. I say don't try to make him watch spirited away introduce some anime ideas you think he will like and hey maybe if he liked One Punch man or something. He might ask you if you know any other good anime, then say spirited away or grave of the fireflies.

annoy the hell out of him & keep asking for 3 days straight to watch Spirited Away with you. if it didn't work then stop asking him and just wish for him to feel guilty about refusing. also start reminding him that you'll go to college next year and will be much more busy to the point where you won't even have the time to watch a single show with him anymore hahaha

all jokes btw (unless 😂). anyway if he doesn't want to watch it, I think it's much better if you just let him be and mind your own business :))

if you can't convince him, coax him. or do a movie marathon of at least three films, so you could include Spirited Away. preferably in-between, since you would want him to get immersed with a film he likes first, and end it with something he wouldn't tire of watching.

Kaonashi. When I first watched the movie, I was surprised to see him there, as I had definitely seen him somewhere on the internet before that. He seems to be a fairly well-known figure even outside of anime world. So your brother would maybe want to actually get to know his origin too?

I had to convince my boyfriend to watch it lol I had him watch Totoro and Princess Mononoke with me, and he really hated them 😆 but he did enjoy Spirited Away!

Bribery might work best for a 15 year old lol

pick a better movie? or better than that pick a good series
if he likes star wars im thinking he might like bebop too.

you can always trade too (i will watch X and you watch Y and then we compare which one was better)

and if none of those work . . . it's bribe time lol

Memes, art from the film, trailers/clips, and music. That gets me into a lot of anime I would overlook or missed out on. I didn’t like Spirited away when I first watched it. I had to watch more anime to learn about Japanese culture and gain a newfound appreciation. It might take other Studio Ghibli films as a nice Disneyesque approach to introducing people to wide audience anime films/franchises. Studio ghibli feels like the Disney of anime/japan.

I gave up on getting my sisters into anime. I think my older sister might pick up manga. I’m not even a hardcore ghibli fan. I passively collect anime films not exclusive to any one studio or franchise.

I own and still haven’t watched
My Neighbor Totoro
Ponyo

I find it harder to get invested in a lot of films since 2-3 hours pails in comparison to the runtime of a 12 eps anime. I know its my opinion but maybe Princess Mononoke or another more action driven Ghibli film might get him to naturally watch Spirited Away. People don’t like being forced to think or watch a series. I think I’ve avoided shows out of spite or I was annoyed to point of losing interest.

Literally this. I found it difficult to convince my friend to watch something outside his niche, so when I wanted him to watch BNHA beyond the first season, I told him that in exchange for watching all of BNHA together, we would also watch his favorite anime, Bleach. The result, we're caught up on both series and both hyped to watch BNHA S6 and Bleach: TYBW this upcoming season.
