I mean it depends on what you think “manly” implies? It’s got a good amount of violence and dark themes, but I dont think it makes this a macho man series that only the dudiest of dudes would like. It is a beautiful story that I think anyone can connect with, even my mom likes it lol. Tho Gurren Lagann has an overarching theme that I think anyone can relate to as well, but that gets the “manly” stamp so idk.

It's a giant sausagefest but it doesn't spend too much time teaching the virtues of masculinuty.

Vinland Saga for me isn't that mainly. If you look at something like Baki, or JoJo, both have a lot of macho moments, while Gurren Lagann has the quintessential bromance. Vinland Saga on the other hand, isn't that macho but instead focused on a beautiful story, with great characters, awesome fight scenes, and the best villain in all of anime. I recommend you watch it.

Your idea of 'manly' IS one of the signature traits of the Viking culture. The show depicts it in all its brutality and toxicity, and doesn't shy away from painting it both positively and negatively.

That said, it is an infinitely more engaging narrative since they acknowledge its presence, but don't lean into it, and depict its morality as faithfully as they can.

It's a bit more realistic and historically accurate than other "pop viking culture" portrayals , it's not the romanticized version , the manly viking warrior stuff , the macho energy .
And it has a bits of deconstruction elements of the usual viking warrior stuff and even more in the next arcs ...

And sure a lot of moments you interpret them to be abrasive macho energy , but it is what it is , early medieval period so ... So you are not going to find many important women (even if there are some but not many) and no lolis swinging swords , maybe shotas though... hihihi

From my understanding, the series kinda rejects the more “masculine” elements of viking culture. That being the brutality and fighting etc. So whilst it does display these things, the narrative does not favour/praise such sentiments.

It’s manly in that it’s very violent, and the characters definitely give off vibes that you could call manly. But it definitely ain’t like Baki lol. It has themes that directly contradict the glorification of violence. It’s actually quite meaningful.

Not it’s not and especially not as the show progresses. It’s more to do with morality than anything else.

I think it speaks on the way humans are/have been as a whole. Rather than being a “manly” show, Vinland Saga can provide entertainment for any seinen fan 👍

Yes. There are evil, evil manbeasts beeing tough. Acting badass, violent and Macho.

I know, I know. Disgusting!

I suggest not getting into it. cause there is Nothing (Nothing!!) in this Show, aside from it's surfice-level looks to redeem the overuse of manliness. I mean...males?! Ugh, Yuck!
