@Irgi1

MAL doesn't add that for anyone

You'll have to do it manually or use the script above like I do.

It does still work partially in some circumstances.

If, on your list, you add the final episode through the "+" button, AND click on "set to completed", then MAL WILL set the "Finished Date" for you automatically.

This doesn't appear to work on some browser/adblocker/scriptblocker combinations, but I have been using it reliably for years with a Firefox/uBlock Origin setup on a variety of different devices.
Very occasionally MAL got it broken, but that rarely lasted for more than a few days.

The equivalent for starting dates hasn't worked in years, so that part you do need to enter manually or through custom scripts.

If the entry is on your plan to watch list and you click the + and then move it to the watching list, it should add the starting date automatically. Is this part broken?

It has been broken for years. I tested it again just before posting the message above, in the same configuration where the "finish date" trigger works, and it was still not working.

As @Jhiday said, it only works when the user is inside the user own anime or manga list page, I also don't think it adds the start date there, only the finish date.

It really should be an automatic feature. Anilist has been doing it for ages and it's great.
I regret not creating an anilist account first. Not one anime I exported from mal has a start and end date in my anilist account. Not cool...

It was fixed a while ago, I remember testing it and it worked. I tested it again now and I also didn't get a date filled in so it seems it broke again. Thanks for pointing it out, I'll forward it to the devs.

And yeah it would be nice if the date could be filled automatically in other ways too but my guess is that this is not so trivial to implement and I don't know how high the priority for this is. But next to the date fields there's a "today's date" link and if you click it it will fill in today's date without manually choosing the date from the drop down menus, so not much effort required except for remembering it.
