Alright so after watching this movie, my brain scattered all over my room. I can't understand LITERALLY ANYTHING about this movie. I want to love this series as much as I did in the Season 1, but after this.. I don't know anymore. And it was highly rated.......

Can someone kind enough to summarize and explain the whole point of this movie? I want to have a general explanation of this as soon as possible before the next movie comes up. Thanks in advance :)

it’s my fav anime ever (the movie specifically) and i didn’t understand it after my first watch either. it does have a clear message; pay extra attention to character motivations, especially homura. she acts in order to be with madoka. her taking hold of madoka was the culmination of this; homura only acts out of her own love, that’s why she’s a demon (madoka serves and helps all, that’s why she’s a god.)

in short just rewatch it and pay more attention to the characters

Incubators wanted a better method of getting energy to stop entropy or whatever so they tried to create a witch, they used Homura as a test subject with the added bonus of trying to figure out who Madoka is.

A witch is physically impossible due to Madoka’s wish but a labyrinth was still able to be created inside Homura’s soul gem, this labyrinth is where the bulk of the movie took place.

Madoka, Sayaka, and Nagisa went into the labyrinth to save Homura but the labyrinth wiped Madoka’s memory, in favour of Homura’s idealised version of Madoka.

As Homura realises what’s happening the labyrinth starts to collapse. This lets Madoka gain back her Memory where she sets out to save Homura.

As Madoka goes to save Homura the Incubators use this as an opportunity to learn and perhaps capture Madoka. Homura doesn’t want this so she tries to make her labyrinth collapse, effectively committing suicide. Madoka manages to save her in time though.

After Homura is brought out of the labyrinth by Madoka, Homura steals a portion of Madoka’s powers allowing her to either rewrite part of reality or gain enough power to expand her labyrinth to encapsulate the universe.

Why did Homura do this?

No one really knows but my understanding is that Homura did this to give Madoka the life she was living before, a life unaware unaware of the magical girl system. I believe this as it’s already been professed at the ending of the original series that Homura views Madoka becoming a part of the law of cycles as a fate worst than death. Wanting what’s best for Madoka is backed by how she tried to kill herself in Rebellion to stop the Incubators finding Madoka.

Incubators trapped Homura in illusion world in order to observe Madoka through her.
She eventually breaks free and then drains God Madoka off her power in order to protect her from this fate (as she tried through whole TV series), becoming her opposite. "Devil to her God" as she describes this. She then enslaves Incubators to do her bidding, which puts whole universe in peril, because they were necessary evil and can no longer hoard power from Magical Girls.

I've actually got a review that disscusses it in a little detail if you want the long answer - https://myanimelist.net/myreviews.php

However you may need to be a little more specific😅. First half hour is a witch allusion set up by the incubators which allows for the other magical girls and civilians to enter. Second act is homura working that out, falling into despair (ala the original series) and being stoped by he other girls.

Final part is madoka coming to request her but homura uses that as an opportunity to take madoka, possibly into her lybrinth which then encapsulated the universe(theory's vary a little on that last point), all so she could save madoka.

Your free to dislike it, your not alone by any measure, however unbiastly speaking the visuals, OsT and directing are all some of the very best out there, so consider how much the last 20 minutes are really worth before u start hating it. Again my review is way more indept but feel free to ask me any questions you got👍.

There's also alot of videos on YouTube, tho any take that suggests homura is a phycopath or never cared about the other girls, is in my opinion looking at it all wrong. Enjoy😅.

I was confused by the ending too, but this essay cleared it up:

Tldr: Homura spent like 13 years repeating the same month over and over again just to save Madoka, only for her to fade out of existence to become a law of nature. She finally got her chance to "save" Madoka at the end of the film when the isolation field prevented Ultimate Madoka from becoming omnipresent. It makes sense for Homura's character to break Madoka from her godly responsibilities. Also, if Homura went with Madoka to heaven, then the incubators would repeat the experiment with other magical girls until they were able to understand the law of cycles and go back to the old system of Magical girls and witches instead of the current Magical girls and Wraiths. Therefore, what we got in rebellion was the best possible outcome.

yep, Homura did nothing wrong. Its Madoka's fault, again

In order to prevent Kyubey from seeing and then confirming the Law of Cycle's existence, Homura was ready to curse and kill herself, Ascending to heaven with Madoka would be a pretty stupid thing to do,
cuz one day Kyubey most likely would be able to hax the Law of Cycle and then control it like a puppet

btw I'm wondering

does MadoKami actually know Homura would "betray" her one day? IIRC she said something like, "Now, I can see the Past and Future" she's basically Omniscient

iF thats true,
Why didnt she choose to Erase Homura's memories about her?

I'm starting to think... Deep down, Madoka actually wanted Homura to Rebel

I don’t know much, but I did like seeing Kyuubey haggard, worn and worried in the after credits scene. I’d like to see him and his friends get what they have coming in the upcoming movie.
