I know. It breaks my heart. When Yuki said that he felt motherly love towards Tohru I was distraught. But I want Yuki and all the Zodiacs to be happy, with whomever they want. But I'm still voting fir him a little.

Depends on what you mean

In terms of character, I like Yuki alot and have found alot of his recent episodes with the student council to be highlights of the series. in terms of romantic interests for Tohru then without a shadow of a doubt Kyo 150%. They just have a really great dynamic where as Yuki's worst bits were his interactions with her since he always felt so one note in them, if anything the fact that the show actually addressed this and basically said he was always trying too hard to convince himself of romantic feelings he doesnt actually have greatly improves what was almost a flaw of the series for me

I’ve always been more of a Kyo fan. Partially because I love cats and found his anger alittle amusing. I never liked Yuki that much in the manga or older anime, but in this new anime I like him more. Still like other characters more though.

Kyo, by a wide margin. Yuki is a great character, but I've always been more emotionally attached to Kyo. His development by the end of the series is wonderful and heartwarming - definitely one of my favorite aspects in the series.

Yuki as a character for sure. He’s just more likeable for me and because his development is just more underrated and beautiful imo.

Honestly, I hate to admit it, but my love for Kyo kind of fell down quite a bit cause of the fandom, especially when they don’t really acknowledge that Kyo really wasn’t that stellar of a person and would rather just focus on how he’s a sad character for how he’s treated. It just irks me a bit to see people easily sweep away how he was wishing for a kid his own age to die ever since they were like elementary kids, or the fact that he blamed all his problems onto that person because it was easier. But it’s just how it is, and in the end I still do really love how Kyo’s character is and how complicated he is. It’s just a pet peeve of mine.

You can't blame him, when your own family looks down on you and hate you of course you won't be able to think rationally not saying he is right in hating Yuki and blaming him that's not a healthy mindset and he needs to break through that but it's understandable why

I honestly disagree that Kyo shouldn’t be blamed just because the Soma family’s system is dysfunctional and terrible and caused him to be an angry hate-filled kid. Regardless of how bad he had it, Kyo actively contributed into a kid his age contemplating suicide when they were around elementary school, and he should be held accountable for that, even though that doesn’t happen. The only reason why Kyo isn’t held accountable for his actions as a kid is because Yuki has decided to move on and not hold it against him, like he has done for literally everyone else who hurt him in the past.

I’m not saying hate Kyo or dislike him, or that the fandom should hold Kyo’s previous actions as a kid against him for who he is now as a better person. I‘m just saying, stop sweeping away his actions when he was younger as “He was suffering/He was just a kid” and actually acknowledge that Kyo was terrible as a kid who made another kid contemplate suicide when that kid did nothing to him at all.

It’s the fact that, from what I’ve seen of the fandom, that people would rather be dismissive of/excuse Kyo’s past behavior rather than acknowledge the bad and hurtful things Kyo has done that irks me.

I'm admitting that I understand why the fandom leans towards Kyo and that I actually had no interest in Yuki whatsoever until Akito was introduced. But I surprisingly ended up loving Yuki more than Kyou overall. Well...now that I actually think about it more, I might like both of them equally. My feelings are just very conflicted.

I finished the whole Fruits Basket manga. I watched both the original and remake of Fruits Basket. I prefer Yuki. Yuki is more relatable to me because I’m still very withdrawn in real life. I’m introverted, and keep a lot of my opinions to myself. I always admire Yuki for being so calm.

The problem with Kyo is I can’t relate to him. He is really hotheaded, and aggressive. Every character has their own flaws. But Kyo also has his own good qualities. He is confident and shows his real self to people. Yuki always admires Kyo for not being afraid to show his true self. In that sense, I’m more like Yuki. So I voted for Yuki.

Same here! I love Kyo a Lot, but sometimes he's to childish. I know it can be hard to show venerability but it doesn't make you weak. The way Kyo shuts Tohru out sometimes irritates me. Yuki is more open with his feelings when he talks to Tohru. Yuki is more mature, that's why I love him and was/am voting for him. But it is what it is. I just need Kyo to mature & open up more about himself to Tohru, instead of her having to find oit things about him from 3rd parties.

I'm in the minority of preferring Yuki over Kyou. I've never really cared for male tsunderes and I'm not a fan of hot-headed characters in general. Yuki is more of my kind of character. I like calm and mature characters.

Don't get me wrong. I like Kyou, but I prefer so many other characters over him.

I think how it is, is the best. I really think Yuki and the other girl are actually a much better fit than he is with tohru, which does indeed take the place for him like a caring 'mother' but not a girlfriend and I can really see that. The personality of that other girl I think will be a good spot for him.

In term of shipping, I prefer Kyo x Tohru.
In terms of character, I prefer Yuki.

Kyo is overrated IMO. He has a traumatic past and I get why so many people are moved by this.
But Yuki's past is sad too. Not here for a stupid "who's the saddest" competition though, because it is never relevant to do this.

Yuki may look perfect and a prince, but like Machi said, each time someone tells him that, it hurts him, because all of this is a front. He may have "everything" (wealth, high ranking in the Zodiacs, etc.), but in terms of affection, he got 0. And still, everyone assumes he is lucky, and maybe shouldn't even complain. That's awful.

Because he looks confident, no one would think that he feels lonely. And I think this is a good representation of actual sadness/depression.
In most medias, people with traumas would be depicted as always sad, not confident. But IRL, lot of depressed people put a mask and hide it well. In most depictions, being depressed is almost seen a something romantic and only a +1 could save you. Here, Tohru helped Yuki, but with pure platonic love and I think it's beautiful, cause it's still rare in fictions. Their relationship is very cute.

Also, I really enjoyed Yuki's growth during the story. Natsuki Takaya, the author, said that Fruits Basket was like the "rite of passage" of Yuki.

Oh, and by the way, I'm not really a cat person ahaha. And I LOVE pet rats, they are the best ahah !

For all those reasons, I really like Yuki as a character.

Sorry for my bad English, it's not my first language.

This is my thought as well. I find Yuki way more personally relatable, due to being introverted and a people-pleaser myself. But I have to say that I think Kyo is a much more realistic depiction of a troubled teenage boy. Sometimes the things Yuki (and Haru, and even Hiro) say and do feel WAY older than their age. I'm left wondering where they got all these wise philosophical insights from, lol. In Haru's case it kind of works as part of his personality. But I think Kyo's emotional cluelessness feels a lot more realistic for his age.

I adore Kyo. Him and Tohru are my favorite characters, but Yuki is a very close third. I didn’t like Yuki much in the original anime, but I loved him in the manga, and his development is top notch. But I’ve always loved Kyo since the very first episode of the original, and his development is just as good as Yukis.

I think one problem for anime only people right now is that Yuki’s development is done at this point. Ok maybe not totally, he has 3 more important scenes, but Kyo’s development is hitting its peak right now.

Finally! Finally someone said it. Thank God!
I never understood this sentiment of the fandom. Majority think the sad past over trumps everything and they turn a blind eye to the actions. Although I liked how Kyo finally came to terms with his actions and admitted it but still the "take" the fandom has on him irks me also to a certain level.

for tohru, kyo. overall, yuki is better, in like every way. i understand how kyo seems more appealing in ways because of the seeming tragedy of his character, how broken he is, he's muscular, angry, internally sad, and people always fall for him when he blushes; his "tsundere with a soft side" trope is pretty popular. people see an angry sad character who's emotionally traumatized and attractive and immediately forgive every one of their flaws. kyo's pretty childish and, at times, i wish he could be more mature, more understanding, kinder.
but yuki, oh god. his character development was incredible. much, much better than kyo's. he's beautifully written, wiser, more mature, calm, emotionally intelligent, trustworthy, and just a more likable character imo. even though his circumstances were so, so unfair, even though he went through the most trauma, he still didn't complain, he didn't blame someone for his problems like kyo did, and he admitted his mistakes. even though people prefer kyo for surface-level reasons, irl most people would prefer yuki tbh. but yea, i still love kyo, it's just that yuki wins out in pretty much everything.

Yuki is arguably the best character in the series and the one with the best character development for sure. That said i like Kyo too and i guess i can understand his appeal to the fandom, and he’s been a fan favourite ever since the old days so no surprises about the poll results. Yuki definitely deserves more recognition tho!
