Hm, I didn't understand too well what Ayaka and Aki's argument was about. Did Aki regret not giving Ayaka that drawstring bag, or did she regret not calling Ayaka out on smiling at the infected people in the yard below? It's kinda confusing.

This is a sad reminder that death takes away our chance to understand others. Sometimes it's too late and we are left without answers. When a person dies suddenly, one can only speculate what the dead person's true intentions were when they did certain events; you can even portray them in your image, the way you remember them. I understand the grief of "If only I had the courage to ask". It's painful to realize that you will NEVER get your answer from that person. :(

At first, I was left cold by this chapter, but then I started thinking about it. Pondering it. Ayaka was probably the closest thing to an antagonist in the series. (Randall is arguable.) As a clear antagonist, one might ponder what led her down that path. Well, we kinda got an answer, that being the boredom of the course her life was taking before the outbreak. Seeing the outbreak as a liberation. But past that, I think that the distinct lack of closeness she felt to others played a role in her turning out the way she did. It was made clear that she was not on friendly terms with anyone, but what if that had changed?

Had Aki prodded Ayaka about why she was smiling, who knows what would have happened. Seeing someone talk to you, try to learn about you... that could be a complete game-changer. When one's heart is lonely, one remark, one gesture, can turn everything around. We can only speculate on what would have happened had Aki made the leap and talked to Ayaka, but it is definitely a possibility that Ayaka might have opened up. Maybe not all at once of course, but over time. And that would have changed the course of the entire university arc of the series. Of course, it's also possible that Ayaka wouldn't have opened up, or that Aki would have given up right there and then instead of persisting and getting through to her. We'll never know.

Antagonists in media are often written as purely "evil" with only their own gains or goals mattering. I enjoy when I can take the time to look at a villain and see why they are the way they are, how it could have been prevented. How they could still change their act. During the main plot of Gakkougurashi, I never was able to find that in her character, but this chapter changed that. More light was shed on her as a person before the outbreak and it appears to imply she had better memories of a few years prior. Perhaps she had friends in high school that she lost? What if everything for her changed after losing friends? Or after a family member's passing? We'll never know. But I now have a newfound appreciation for Ayaka, and I believe her path still could have changed for the better when the main cast got into the picture. There was still a way, I'm sure of it. I think it's after she "murdered" the infected Kougami (crossbow guy) and led her group to attack the university that there was no coming back.
"Death is not the end. Being forgotten is."
