| THIS IS A MANGA ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS ANYTHING BEYOND THIS CHAPTER. ---------------------------------------- With a year's time skip and no contact between Gin and Morita, we jump into a new adventure. Gin actually got to play the role of main character which is quite rare, and there was a clear tone shift. Changing from gloom and doom to comedy as a new arc begins is a technique I see a fair bit. It's a good method of resetting the status quo. And what's a better way to reset than going back to the very beginning of the manga with horse racing? The crew is trying to attack the JSA, a version of the Japanese Racing Association, through the ministry of agriculture and fisheries by squeezing the current people party’s president Youichi Kouno dry! Well that was a mouthful, but what is important is that it will be done through horse racing. And where do we begin other than adopting a new young boy to work for Gin! The reason I called this a comedic tone shift at the beginning of this post was because seeing Gin try and get this irritated punk on his side by following him around and even putting his arm around him while he is being ignored was really funny. It was light-hearted when we needed it to be! But why can't he be a replacement for Morita? Because he's not nearly as attractive of course! I've seen that panel out of context, but seeing it in context is even funnier honestly. I wonder how homoerotic the writing is in Japanese, because calling Morita attractive or saying his “body” is perfect definitely fits the bill in English, whether or not it’s entirely metaphorical in context. But perhaps more important, apparently looking less villainous and having a certain talent will help this job go smoothly. |
