THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
This episode is pretty light on plot, mostly just the GR1 vs GR3 fight. Maybe I'm projecting a tad, but I think the emphasis on GR1 being sort of a symbol of Daisaku's potential as an individual and his resolute declarations about the GR1 not killing people and taking offense to GR3 destroying those helicopters, it feels like it the direction makes the emotional responses from Daisaku here feel emphatic and meaningful, like he himself is gaining more conviction and channeling how to use all this latent potential he has to become a big figure of change, to have an impact on the world. This high school dropout is realizing his potential to make a difference and that he has worth and great potential and everything I dig it. The reporter lady was able to spot Daisaku being alive though, so it looks like the secret was incredibly short lived lol. The squid GR also awakens during the fight, but the GR1 is able to influence it to combine with the GR1 itself properly, maybe as though Daisaku's resolution becomes inspiring to others or it aligns with the true values of the GRs, Daisaku with his idealism and the administrative forces overseeing him letting him retain his agency which gives a strength that the GRO system can't achieve. That extending lightning fist was pretty rad.

The actual fight choreo and everything isn't too quick or flashy, but still has some impact, and it's the continued aptitude for capturing a sense of scale with the shots that makes things effective imo.

Not bad, next episode looks like a lot of major developments are happening, so that's promising.

GR1 spent most of that fight deactivated and unresponsive, and then effortlessly destroyed GR3 when it finally reactivated itself. Makes you curious as to what the exact trigger for it is, as it's a mecha that apparently responds to emotions. We didn't really get a clear window into what emotion or thought Daisaku had that finally prompted GR1 to do something, but I imagine it's commitment to the fight, or maybe a certain resolution. Also, GR1 now has the ability to to influence other GRs like Dakora (GR8), which allows it to combine with them. Top all that off with its newly revealed ability to teleport, fly and launch its fists from an extended chain, and you've got a GR that really does seem to be the best of the lot. Such a waste to transfer GR1 over to American territory, now that we've discovered what it can do.

Noooo, not Odaiba.

Really boring ep tbh, despite the good mech designs. Feel like the rest of this series is defo gonna be a bit of a slog. Hopefully I'm wrong tho and it livens up later, not exactly holding out hope tho.
