It's official. With this week's data, Kimetsu no Yaiba has sold in 8 weeks more copies than it sold over all of 2019, according to Oricon.

KnY in 2019: 12.057.628 copies.
KnY in 8 weeks of 2020: 12.882.297 copies.

Keep in mind timeframes are based on Oricon's Yearly Ranks.

Once the movie drops, it's gonna get even crazier.

Doubt it. It will definitely break more than 20 million but 30 million is just too good to be true unless if the movie somehow brings in even way more fans.

It insane how much of a boost the anime gave the manga. I can see it easily breaking the 20+ million wall by the end of the year.

I also wish to see it break the 30+ million wall but it still feels far fetched unless the movies do REALLY good.

Unless the movie is released within 2 months, KNY can hardly maintain the sale the rest of the year because the story seems to be in its final chapters.

Nowadays, hype is not long-lasting due to too many new trends. This is why Ufotable and WSJ should take advantage of this time frame to boost KNY as much as possible.

I picked up the manga only after watching the anime so I can totally relate to the sales stats. Hopefully, things will snowball from here on out. However, this also means that the hate for KNY will grow in proportion.

Maybe not in the west but I'm pretty sure even muggles know KNY these days. Although it's definitely a lot more popular in Japan as things stand.

Every popular anime has received hate in one way or another. People are already picking fights for no reason with KNY stans in Twitter. I mean just look at MAL. It's the same situation lol.

Atleast this will make people understand what a good adaptation can do to a manga and start investing so more good manga can gain popularity.

We aren't even 8 weeks onto 2020, so these numbers definitely come from the anime boost from late 2019 still.

This is Oricon's calendar. It already ended around november last year.

I see, so that previous best sold 2019 one wasn't even counting those volumes of manga from December (including the new one for Demon Slayer), I did find weird they would count pre-sale order numbers or something since the year didn't end back when they made the list, I guess is just that their count for each year just goes up to November then.

Still weird to say 8 weeks of 2020 in January, gotta say.

And that is a bit confusing to say that too, if it's Oricon's numbers only and not digital sales or anything else.

Back when Oricon released their top 2019 sales late November, Kimetsu had sold 25 million copies in circulation, according to Shueisha, being just short of One Piece in overall sales (likely meaning numbers other than Oricon, because Kimetsu demolished those by 2 million ahead). And that, naturally, was before volume 18 even came out.

But even if you get ALL of the most recent Oricon numbers including the newest volume 18 (which are accumulated over the years they were released, so even sales from when the first volume was released are in the total number), you still come short of 30 million copies (precisely 29,522,589‬ copies), less than 5 million copies than the overall sales and definitely not on par with the previously stated 12 million copies from 2019 alone back in November of the same year, unless this is completely restricted to Oricon numbers that is, and we ignore the overall sales completely (in which case the numbers likely match the individual sales top from 2019, but I'm not gonna calculate that far lol).

So my take is that:

1- Kimetsu didn't outsell itself in 2020 compared to 2019 overall sales, but the number of sales registered in Oricon ALONE more than doubled the number ever since Late November 2019.

2- Meaning the overall sales must have surpassed the 30 million, hell, maybe much more than that mark at this point, which is awesome.
