Maybe PreCure series or idol genre, in general (can't think of anything particular besides PriPara)? I'm not sure if they all are inspired by K-On!
First K-on is like from 2007. Second, K-on have nothing to do with idol gerne.

Nope, not 2007 at all. The timeline for K-On is:

  • K-On!: Spring 2009
  • K-On!: Live House!: Winter 2010
  • K-On!!: Spring 2010
  • K-On! Movie: Winter 2011

The influence is fundamental, character designs both visually and typcast-wise were permanently changed by the "K-On formula". Eyes, noses etc. were keionized cross-genre, plots around school idols and other CGDCT mushroomed, and the Mio/Yui prototypes were copied over and again. Here is a recommendation I wrote for Sora yori mo Tooi Basho (A Place Further Than The Universe), which exemplifies the influence K-On had even a decade later.

Except for the different plots, Sora Yora is like a 10th anniversary edition of K-On! with modernized production values. It clones the K-On formula down to the level of cast, supporting cast, humor, and pacing, and it does so really well! The leading two girls, thoughtful, shy, and somewhat uptight hime-cut beauties Mio/Shirase and slightly clumsy, passionate, unconditionally positive brown-haired genki-girls Yui/Mari are twins separated at birth.

Both shows have their distinct, recognizeable moe art styles and stand out with animation quality near movie smoothness. Both shows are premium diabetis material, Sora Yori's plot has a a little bit more action. And just like K-On is not really about music, Sora Yori isn't really about Antarctica. And I couldn't care less.

And sure, one can probably find shows preceding K-On using Moe, Slice-of-Life, CGDCT elements etc. But K-On mixed it all into the smash-hit formula. It's the final form, so to say. And in my opinion, it is still the gold standard even with shows like Sora Yori getting pretty close.

SAO is the big one, since it got the isekai craze ball rolling, which is still going on.

MHA for being kind of a successor to the Big 3.

OPM & AOT for taking the whole world by storm and even leaking into mainstream.

Sword Art Online. Not that it necessarily has a bunch of novel ideas, but the series showed how profitable isekai light novels with a self insert protag can be.

this is probably correct considering how much isekai we are getting crushed with now

The first one that comes to mind is definitely K-ON!! I mean, it may have not invented moe SoL, but it sure as hell started a trend this decade.

The only reason I didn't include K-On is because that one is, technically, pre-2010.

Of course its influence was felt way after that. Hell, it's still felt today. But still... didn't want to set myself up for that one.

Yeah, the first season was pre-2010s but when it comes to anime that defined this decade I think we can cut it some slack by a few months lol. Besides K-ON!! (the second season) and the movies came out this decade, so there could be some technical excuse as to why to include it as well.

That decision can be made only at the end of the year, by both you and me.

1. I finished "Promised Neverland" basically on the same leves as "Boku Dake ga Inai Machi" so a definite maybe.
2. I watched five ep of "Mob Psycho" and not my cup of tea, still a big deal anime but I just can't say that I enjoyed it, and therefore wouldn't recommend.
3. Now "Vinland Saga" I know nothing about but am hopefull.

Definitely both Attack on Titan and Sword Art Online. Both had huge followings (and still kinda do), and you couldn't go on an anime site without hearing about both of those shows.
Insert a neat little signature with an anime gif or something here.

From a mainstream perspective...
Attack On Titan
Steins;Gate
One Punch Man
My Hero Academia
Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure
Puella Magi Madoka Magica
Monogatari Series
Gintama (even though it technically started in the 2000s)
Hunter x Hunter
Sword Art Online (somewhat unfortunately)

Best movies of the Decade
Your Name
A Silent Voice
Wolf Children
NGE movies (I mean, I’m not a fan, but they seemed pretty popular)
The Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya

Moderately popular/isolated monster hits
Ano Hana
Psycho-Pass
Free!
Made In Abyss
3-Gatsu no Lion
Yuri On Ice
Ping Pong
Mob Psycho 100
Kill la Kill
No Game No Life
Shigatsu wa Kimi no Uso
Violet Evergarden
A Place Further Than The Universe
Chihayafuru
Bungou Stray Dogs
Haikyuu
Bakuman

Low-key sleeper hits
Shinsekai Yori
Uchouten Kazoku
Angel Beats
Hanasaku Iroha
Gosick

I feel like I’m missing a few, but those are the anime that first come to mind for me when I think about this generation of anime.

Attack on Titan definitely hit the hardest in general, though died off in the very late 2010s.

Monogatari series is the most consistent throughout the decade.
