Depends on what you're after.

Personally I didn't think the first few episodes were that bad, most of my problems were in episode 3. I think it gets a lot better with episodes 4 and 5 though, where we get a serious arc with mind games and exploration of character's past and relationship with others.

Yes it definitely improved a lot since first episode.Too bad many dropped after 1st episode.
This show is defintely something unique in terms of charcter, you gotta have patience watch this.
I liked all episode so far, 8/10 so far.

The thing is, I actually really appreciate the first episode, though I don't think it works well with today's anime community. They want instant gratification with anime and judge things too much based on stereotypes, calling something edgy just because there's some focus on angst.

The first episode didn't completely establish what kind of series this is but considering how many genres they're going for, it would have been impossible to do without rushing. The second episode managed to do that though there was a little they could have worked on to present it better.

This anime went for a thematic first episode, one that's really nice to look back on once we watch the rest of the series. It's like an episode that says, this is where it all started to contrast with where the journey takes the characters. That's why they highlight Koba's angst a lot and use distinctly beautiful imagery in his first conversations with Hanasaki, to emphasize how much meaning there was for that time to them.

The direction for this anime is pretty good. You notice the dark tone was used mainly to introduce Kobayashi and it lightens up quite a bit with episode 2 onward.

This kind of introduction is pretty daring these days when compared to other anime that aims to please the viewers as soon as possible. But Trickster doesn't just aim for instant gratification but a better overall experience.

If you thought the first few episodes were bad, it's still bad.

I'm with you. I am personally hate it after finishing the first episode.
The art is average, the story (I can see that coming) quite similar with Bungou Stray Dogs and it is boring story theme for me, the character is annoying (they don't behave like I would think people should behave if they are in that situation) Hanasaki keep on laughing for no reason. The villain desperately tried to look cool but doesn't seems to have a strong background to be villain. The detective and tantei team seems like a playground. Sigh...ok, time to shut up and move on.

I think Hanasaki's positive demeanor is his way of countering the negativity around him. This is especially true for when he's around Kobayashi where he really overdoes it. I think he feels sorry for the kid and tries to be his light or something.

Episodes 4 and 5 are definitely an improvement. The only decent detective work we got in the first three episodes was with episode 2 but the presentation was really off.

The sewer arc communicated the detective work better, not to mention, stories that explore characters.

I thought it was fine for the first few episodes and it seemed interesting, but its really getting bad now and has slowly been getting worse and worse. I'd say its 3 as of now..

I'm a cursed completionist and find it next to impossible to drop shows.

I thought episode 1 was okay, but nothing special. 2 - 5 just hurt me. 6 and 7 were okay. Since 8 though it's been on a roll.

Between 8 - 12, we finally figure out the relationship between hanasaki and Koba. Hanasaki gets a slap in the face from life and see him actually deal with the shit around him. He actually succumbs to the shit and now has to find his way out. We get to see Kogoro kick some ass. The villain finally gets motivation (through too much exposition, but whatever, at least now his character makes sense). There is been a lot more insight into the rest of the team members.

The most frustrating thing about this show is that it is, on balance, shit for the first half dozen episodes.

The anime is worth it if you are starved, but the plot is slow and annoying at times. Still I liked the visuals, character design, the originality and am happy I finished it.
