You type in any random, non-super mainstream anime into a Google search, and its pretty much guaranteed that anime's entry on MAL will be in the top 3 search results -- if it's not already the first result that pops up. You ask almost any anime-related question on a Google search, and there's a high chance one of the first search results will direct you to a thread on MAL answering it. Even just type in a mix of "forums" and "anime" into Google, and chances are that MAL or Crunchyroll will be the first result. Even just look at the banner on top of this page and you'll see MAL is already associated with other internet big shots like Hulu and Crunchyroll. I probably couldn't even name more than 3 other dedicated and relevant anime websites on the spot.

I mean, I'm not riding MAL's dick or anything, but sometimes you just kind of have to face the facts. Crunchyroll is probably the only other website that could realistically rival MAL, and remember that the two are associated now. Maybe MAL's main popularity and appeal stems from its anime-listing capabilities, but it still manages to one up other websites that do the same thing like Hummingbird and Anilist. Things like Nyaa and Bakabt are pretty much exclusive to anime enthusiasts and those who know how to torrent, so their exposure is much more limited. And keep in mind that MAL has been around for a heck of a long time now, so its name has been around for longer than a lot of other anime websites out there.

So yeah. Discuss your thoughts and stuff on this. Protaku wants discussion.

Not really, Mal is far from being the most popular Anime site in the entire internet. According to Alexa Rankings Here These are currently the top anime websites. (Some of them I wouldn't consider legit anime websites, but I couldn't filter them any further) And Here is Mal's ranking. It's below sites such as Kissanime by a huge margin. It's above Curnchyroll globally by a small margin, but it's outclassed in US rankings.

It isn't the most popular

They were just one of the first to start an anime database

So google lists them first a lot

SankakuComplex is number 1 lol, glad to see ANN there though

now i can see why MAL has added that featured articles section to somewhat compete with the likes of ANN and SankakuComplex

but ye as far as anime listing is concerned though then MAL is the most popular

Based on this undeniable evidence, MAL is obviously the most famous... ever... in the world, like rlly.

It might be the best (and maybe largest) database, but there are other popular communities that have probably been running longer. There are other plenty other anime communities, MAL isn't the most popular. Although it is fairly popular for its database and anime/manga lists.

MyAnimeList is officialy the world's largest anime and manga website on the internet according to the official figures and it is the foundation of all the anime and manga industry userbases primary profiles along with the largest database of anime and manga, which then from here they connect to all the other databases, networks and platforms.

MyAnimeList is definitely a lot larger than Crunchyroll and works as the primary profile for anime and manga, three years ago it had over 120 million monthly users and now that the anime industry has grown and expanded more that number has become even larger. Crunchyroll is not even the largest streaming website, it is only for a single country and it is a paid service so the population is lower by default. KissAnime which is another streaming service has hundred millions more users than Crunchyroll and there are other anime streaming websites with more population as well. MyAnimeList has more than all of these websites as it is the largest network and database and from here it connects with all the others.

KissAnime is a streaming website to watch anime so it can not be compared with MyAnimeList which is the primary encyclopedia and social network of anime and manga on the internet. By comparing everything that has anime related communities then that would also include platforms such as Google+, Facebook, Twitter and so on because those also have thousands of anime and manga related groups, pages and communities and this way it can basically include the whole web since anime content is everywhere, but for the main concept MyAnimeList is officialy the number #1 database and network of the anime and manga industry and the home of everyone's primary profile is on this website.
