Spotlight Manga: Real

MAL Manga Information Page: Real

Score: 8.74 (scored by 2971 users)
Ranked: #37
Popularity: #413

For the next two weeks I would like to have a discussion about the manga that focuses on the key elements that we here on MAL use to critically rate a manga: Art, Characters, Story, and Enjoyment.

I would like everyone to approach this thread as if you were going to write a review and structure your initial post like this:

Art - insert rating
Characters - insert rating
Story - insert rating
Enjoyment - insert rating

Art - discuss any pros and cons of the art styling used in the series, try to include some specifics.

Character - describe any of the things you liked or didn't care for in regards to specific characters in the series

etc...

If you are having trouble writing up a review or coming up with specific pros and cons, please don't worry. Just do the best you can with it and if you can only write two or three sentences about any of the 4 elements then that's OK. Not everyone here is currently at a level which will allow them to articulate their thoughts and opinions.

After your initial post is made you can feel free to civilly discuss issues of contention. I am sure there will be many opinions expressed here that some of us will disagree upon and criticise and it is for that reason that this entire club exists. So I hope everyone has fun and I am really looking forward to seeing how this discussion will develop.

I felt very identified with the characters, I had a leg injury just before a karate black belt examination that left me several years in rehabilitation, nothing comparable to losing completely the mobility of a limb, but as Inoue recreates his feelings, the truth is that I was very affected.

I liked very much the characterization and all the feelings that this manga managed to transmit, although I am not able to differentiate whether it was from my own experience, or because the work seems to me to be very well done.

I think that this manga can help someone to start something that they have been wanting to do for a long time, or help someone not to stop doing something that makes them feel good just because it is frowned upon.

This manga helped me a lot, and it was very interesting to know a sport like wheelchair basketball, with many rules added to traditional basketball, such as the value of players depending on their mobility.

So for my it'll be a yes.

pretty sure Inoue stated it was self reflection on his view on basketball in one of his volume epilogue. hence why it's frequently hit too close to home. yes for me.

Here's a brief snippet of my thoughts reading this manga.

Delving into this I was afraid that the work's tackling of disabilities may not have been done in good taste, meaning that it was used as a superficial way of acquiring novelty without really pondering on the subject of importance. But it was only after a few chapters that I realized that my worries have been completely unfounded. This is a very real and hearfelt story about three individuals, one—and later two— of which are physically handicapped due to some bad circumstances. Characters are all very believable but not necessarily immediately likable. I think it's fair to say that our 3 main leads are not exactly saints, which while is definitely a more sensible approach than to make them Gary Stu's, it may slightly hinder the reader's willingness to root for them. It takes additional effort from the reader to try to understand where our characters come from and gradually grow to like them but it is all the more rewarding because of it. They all feel like they're handled with care by and have their unique outlooks on life which the author cleverly utilizes by contrasting it to another character and making their perspectives clash with each other. If there's one thing I'll have to say in the negative though, is that oftentimes, the show's presentation of its themes feel way too direct in its approach. There are times when things need not to be uttered out to convey a certain emotion but it seems like the mangaka doesn't trust in the reader's intelligence enough to do so.

I think that's all from me. Of course it's not nearly extensive enough and there are some elements which I left out intentionally as I'm not able to articulate my thoughts on them to the point that I'm satisfied with but that should do for now.
