You mean from the Divine Comedy, right?
Because if so then I kind of got a similar aroma from the story and atomosphere.

Berserk can't be inspired by Dante since it came 20 years before the game came out.

Wait Dante Inferno actually comes from an old poem ?? Shit that's embarassing lol. Mea culpa I guess

I think he means from the divine comedy.
The epic poem written by Dante Alighieri.

Yeah I shamefully didn't know about it, I only played the video game. He could've at least called it Divine Comedy, would've spared me the embarassment ^^

lol it's okay, it doesn't mean anything.

Dante's inferno is referred to as the first part of the divine comedy and not the entire poem. So maybe that's why OP only said dante's inferno.

I always thought Berserk was a re-imagining of Shakespeare's Macbeth.
I read about some similarities, and they sound pretty similar.
I might be wrong, though, dunno.

There are multiple things that inspired berserk, so that could be one of them as well. But the main one was guin saga. http://myanimelist.net/manga/14066/Guin_Saga

I don't think that having a "damsel in distress" is enough to say that it was inspired by Dante's Inferno.

If anything, I'd say that it's more tied to the Ring of the Nibelung than the Divine Comedy.

Personally, I believe so. If you think about what Guts goes through and the world he lives in, the similarities are obvious. :)

Yup miura has mentioned guin saga as an influence. Also violence Jack and dororo!
It probably isn't influenced by dante's inferno, the similarities are probably just a coincidence

Dunno bro. I didn't watch berserk.

But DMC Dante's Lucifer might be inspired by Gilgamesh's Gate of Babylon.

Dante’s inferno came out in the 14th century.

Berserk came out in 1989.

Yes it can absolutely be inspired by the Divine Comedy.

This thread gave me cancer.

Regarding the question: The Divine Comedy greatly influenced the popular perception of Christianity, hell, suffering, punishment, and so on. If a person portrays hell, terrible suffering or something similar, then with a high chance he takes something from the Divine Comedy, even if he does not know about it, even if he never heard of Dante. In general, it can be difficult to portray something demonic, but not in style of tradition coming from the Divine Comedy. People then simply do not understand that this is an devilish evil force. I think this option is more likely here. So I do not think this can be called hard "inspiration".
