Don't know if this counts but FMP Fumoffu's first episode was one of the best from the series. Actually all the FMP's had great opening episodes. Also a big fan of Last Exile's first episode and Air Gear's first episode.

For those saying FMA and Elfen Lied...
FMA first two episodes weren't very good and I wasn't hooked until the 3rd episode.
Elfen Lied's 1st was overwhelming but was a little weak compared to other episodes in my opinion.

You sure have a weak state of mind when it comes to gore and violence. Shuda seen Gantz.

Quote escalator! Anyway, I take it from fishing around in your post your reply was "You sure have a weak state of mind when it comes to gore and violence. Shuda seen Gantz."? Gantz was about the same on the Gore levels as Elfen lied but it was more "spread out".

The goriest part of Gantz however would be in the second season but I'm not going to tell you as its a SEKRIT.

Its just that elfen lied was really QQ worthy apparently
i am not matured enough to watch stuff that depressing
but gantz apparently has a comedy tinge to it

Well it's true Elfen Lied tugs at the heartstrings quite a bit and there are some, how do I put this, "controversial" scenes in it. Unlike most saddening anime I have watched (whether they be dominated by the theme or just specks of it) I got depressed halfway through the series as opposed to the end with most shows. It didn't get any better it just got worse.

Elfen Lied goes deeper than the "senseless violence" that many ignorant viewers seem to deem it as. Elfen Lied is one of those anime you just have to finish because of the story but when you're done, you don't want to watch it again regardless if you rated it a 10 or a 1.

Now I'm not going to go on a long winded explanation of the Pros/Cons and the "symbolism" in Elfen Lied as I'll be here all day but I think its say to say that it's a must watch for any serious anime fan/collector.

Without a doubt, Needless.

First, the opening gets you hooked. The music is just pwnsomenessly. Then, all the ackshun (I don't feel like spelling correctly today) scenes just blow yur mind! Then, ecchi fanservice equals NGUYEN! (WIN!)

I agree, death note had a really interesting, appealing first episode, i ended up watchinghalf the series that night!

I also reckon that Evangelion, Darker than Blak, Kimi Ni Todoke and Fruits Basket all had great first episodes ;D

This season, the best first episode is definitely Dance in the Vampire Bund.

The first ep of it is a tv show about the existence of vampires... so breathtaking!

I've never seem a anime similar than this =]

Edited to say that you have no right to judge the anime. I thought it was "creative". The mix of action, comedy and ecchi hit all the right spots.

First anime that came to mind was Ga-Rei Zero. The first episode really made me want to watch that anime to see what the heck was happening (I was totally confused towards the end).

Might not be the best first episode, but it's the one that instantly came to mind.

High School Girls - hot damn! girls think like that?!
KareKano - that was just hilarious.
Kino's Journey - it's stand alone and I needed to know more of that world
Mnemosyne - that first ep really pulled me in.
Tenjou Tenge - badasses kicked by badass babe

Great first episodes persuades me to watch more than just 1 episode.

Incidentally, I second Ga-Rei Zero. That was seriously messed up. A first episode were
How can I not watch the rest of the series with an intro like that?

The ones that gave a huge impact and captivated me into wanting more are:

Ga-Rei -Zero- {most shocking opening}
Death Note {straight to the point}
The Meloncholy of Haruhi Suzumiya {messed up order one was unique}
Higashi no Eden {johnny}
Lucky Star {pretty much was a WTF moment seeing the OP}

Higashi no Eden, because it was really funny, but at the same time serious and it seemed like it would be a really interesting and smart anime.

Death Note, well, the feeling you get from the first episode... I'm hoping I will get that feeling sometime again when I'm watching a new animes first episode.

Ouran High School Host Club was funny and gave a good preview of what was to come later on.
