| Its basically one of those anime where a lot of things are left for interpretation ,so giving it the tag of "intelligence" is not really appropriate.The more you want to look at subtle foreshadowing,the more you tend to get the results.It basically varies from one individual to another and their scope of interpreting(wrong or right).Its a very good anime and is still praised by those that have watched even after 18 years,so lets leave it at that. The topic of "being the best" is subjective. |

| Serial Experiments Lain is without a doubt one of the best Anime of the late 90s, and at least I feel the story was way too convoluted at times and in my opinion that's why it's not a masterpiece. For me a clever/intelligent series would be Death Note, mainly due to how L and Light try to hunt each other. |

| If you look at Ueda Yasuyuki's interview, you'll see that Lain isn't as smart as they say, as excellent as he is. Lain is a "mess that got it right", basically. |
