What's stopping you from doing what you want to do?

We've all held back from doing something in our lives before, whether we admit to it or not. Usually because of fear: Fear of failure, fear of embarrassment, fear of not living up to expectations, etc.

Say there's a career/job you really want to do, but you hold back from making any sort of attempts. Even if you have the qualifications to match the job, or if you don't, you don't even attempt to gain the prerequisites required. Why? What's the thing that's stopping you from doing what you want to do?

I'm sure some things holding us back would simply be a lack of money/resources required to do something. I feel like a lot of the reasons we make excuses for not fulfilling our dreams though is because we feel we aren't quite up to scratch.

Discuss.

In a lot of cases, be it through fear or lack of prerequisites, the only thing stopping you is yourself. I have difficulty imagining any situation in which it can be blamed on something else; that's usually just something you'd say to shift the blame and feel better about yourself.

Don't have the money? Technically, your fault. Don't have the grades? That's nothing but your fault. And so on and so on.

Not trying to poke holes in your post... But, what if I was disabled on birth, that's not my fault.

But yes. Obviously it wouldn't be your fault. And that's a fine example of a situation in which it wouldn't be.

Being realistic.

And in some cases the fear of failure I guess.

But to be honest I want many things, and I don't expect to accomplish everything during my lifetime.

Not having money is not always "Technically, your fault." What about someone born into a society that doesn't give them the opportunity to have any sort of financial gains? The whole world isn't rich, nor is the monetary system perfect.
Also, as -Turnip- pointed out, someone who is born disabled, or even if they become disabled later on in life are restricted with what they do.

I know that feeling bro. I know my username is "SnugglyWhuggly", but the truth is, I'm not actually very snuggly whuggly at all. I'm just trying to compensate for my lack of snuggliness.

If it's any consolation, after confessed to my first love, not only was I rejected, I also ended up losing my best friend. :c

Life just likes to play cruel little jokes like that, such as having your love confess to you after you've already moved countries.

There's a mix of different reasons. Experiences from the past, things I've done which still effects and has an impact on my life, a not too long ago depression (itchy scars), and some things I obviously can't do anything about.

I am moving towards something though, but things are easier said than done. It takes time to repair, prepare and struggle, but at least it goes towards the right direction.

I'm not gonna make the game of my dreams because I don't have the attention span to program and I don't want to make a bunch of smaller games before getting to the one I actually care about. Games like this cost dozens of millions of dollars. I'll just keep working on it theoretically.

I'm stopping myself from doing what I want to do. I don't even know what I want to do, and that's my point. I don't put it any effort into thinking about or looking into what I want to do. I should really put effort in, but I just never get around to it.

Most of the time it's the feeling that you're not going to fit or fulfill that position. Sometimes you just have to walk in there with confidence, and you'll get exactly what you want. The idea of failure often stands in the way as well. Even if we do fail, we can take something away from it. It could be a lesson or more information to fulfill that gap you could not fill. Sometimes it's harder to recover from that failure, but often times, it just that lack of confidence.

Have you ever been in a position of weakness? Or have you just had most things work out alright all your life? Grow up in a nice home? Good parents? Good school? Good grades? Good opportunities?

There's way too much at play in life. You cannot vouch for something so slim and minuscule in that regard. There are people born and thrown into situations that is not their fault at all. You could work really hard all your life and get clobbered with the fact of life. You know what that fact is? Life. Isn't. Fair. And that's the problem here. That's where I completely disagree.

Striving to better your life. And all the bullshit that comes with it. Yes, some don't work hard enough, then complain about it. But truly, there are people out there who work enormously harder then any of us have ever known. And you know what it gave them? Nothing. All relating back to life not being fair.

Life is not a give and take in that you give, and then benefit. Some it is, some it isn't. But this does not apply equally to everyone. Imagine if you were born in a third world country. Would hard work bring you wealth? Money? Mostly, no. And that's where the line is skewed. Vodall, and you, are thinking too confined on your own personal lives. Lacking the empathy to relate to those who haven't been born into your situations.
