Is there a game that is so hard to beat, so annoyingly taunting that you will never play it again? Perhaps you beat it and now you're putting it on the ol' shelf?

Drawn to Life's final boss was sort of hard to beat, but my friend gave me a cheat for unlimited lives. Sadly, my sisters lost that game, so I was never able to finish it.

Oh, and if you can't tell, I don't really play video games.

Ninja Gaiden 2 on Mentor and above.. Mentor is doable, but the difficulties above that just take too much practice for a single player game.

Crysis-WarHead... I beated it on the highest difficulty and it was a complete nightmare. Other one I expended countless hours on was Mass Effect, which can be really tough on some players not used to shooters/rpgs (of course playing on hard).

I've kind of given up on Touhou on Lunatic
I consider myself a pretty good gamer, but that's just a tad too much.

Other than that Star ocean: Till the end of time has some pretty menacing bosses
and I once quit it for a while....I have yet to finish it.

OHOHO.

Well, beside such peculiarities, you could also try Demon's Souls, it's supposed to be pretty brutal. Just look at that tactical staircase battle, and that's just against a random mook.
Haven't played it myself though, so I can't really comment much.

Mickey Mania for snes is ridiculously hard for what supposedly is a "kids game". Also, I don't recall mickey having to dodge bombs, axes, and burning lava in any of the cartoons but ok.

The part where you had to descend into a cave with a rope was not fun to say the least.

I can honestly say I haven't quit a game just because its really hard. I might quit for a while, then come back later after I've cooled off and then beat it.

Persona 3 FES. I still plan to get the PSP version because I heard you'll be able to control everyone directly, which would make the game a lot easier because you don't have to anticipate f-ups from your teammates.

Man, games like that don't come around for me anymore. There used to be a shitload on the NES that were really tought. Has anyone ever played Solstice for the NES? This game was ridiculous hard and to this day, I still haven't beaten it.

Oh man, I remember this game. Unfortunately, I don't own it so could never beat it, but a friend of mine used to have it and when we played it when we were young, it was tough as balls. Turtles 2 and 3 were so much easier, and much more fun. Konami definitely knew what they were doing in creating those games.

They used to make video games to beat your ass, now they are made to be beaten. =O It was one way to add cheap replay value. Even so, it added some sense of accomplishment when you overcame the odds.

Can't think of any by name that I just won't give a shot anymore, cuz there are some classics that I just have to load up once in a while. Like Super Ghouls n Ghosts. :D

The Answer was really tough, particularly for me as I'd played through the main game on Easy mode. I don't think I'll be playing that again ANY time soon.

Alot of Sega and SNES games as i remember, Only one that i can think of recently would be Ninja Gaiden 2. The sense of accomplishment you got from finally finally beating a very tough old SNES/Sega game was awesome :D Sad games nowdays don't give that feeling as much, but i certainly spend less of my time bashing my head against a wall in frustration! :)

I agree that this is a legitimate choice admist all these badass oldschoolers. Even if you've played absolutely perfectly with kajas, kundas and evade elements, the RNG could still absolutely rape you in the boss fights if you were very unlucky. Add to this the AI of your characters and the game could be considered reasonably frustrating. Yukari's healing AI was particularly epic. Why, when your teammates are dying around you, would you cast Wind Break? Why, Yukari?

Ugh... So true on the Yukari part. If only FES was able to add the manual commands just like P4 -_-

Let's see... Metroid Prime and probably all the other shooters out there. Why? They all give me headaches after 2mins of playing the game >_>; It took me at least a year to finish MP1... I was forcing myself to finish it since I got it as a Christmas present during the time it got released. That made me realize that I can't take FPS D:

How far are you? I'm guessing you haven't hit the final boss yet, at which going in at level 85 was borderline underleved of me. And then gyah!! Don't heal him!!! I'm low on Beads and Soma to reverse your idiocy!

I don't know or think that I have come across a game that made me feel that way, but some real touch ones I thought were:

Panzer Dragoon Orta
Siren
Conker's Bad Fur Day
Castle of Shikigami
Any Contra title
Ninja Gaiden series

I'll add more as they come to me.

Quite a few games..

Rondo of Swords: I can't even beat the tutorial. The first stage is even harder. Unless a cheat device is used, winning one battle may be a little difficult.

Shin Megami Tensei I: There is a random encounter every step you walk and the save spot is like hundreds of steps away from the healing spot and the city.

Let's not forget that the main reason why many old video games were hard as hell was because they had horrible gameplay, design, etc.
The hard games that were actually good most people didn't give up on them, like the original Legend of Zelda or Contra.
