Why isn't x series on this list?
The list only includes series that are published by actual light novel labels. This excludes things like the monogatari series and hyouka, among others. It also excludes GOSICK, which was rereleased under a light novel label after the anime aired. Furthermore, adaptations of spinoffs are not included. However, anime-original spinoffs of light novels are included.
Only TV anime are included on the list. OVAs, ONAs (unless they also aired on TV) etc. are not included.

Nice thread. I just want to suggest something. Maybe add how many volumes each adaptation covers. That is quite common question and people who want to simply continue story would be easily able to do it.

I believe the Antimagic Academy project is being hosted by Fujimi Fantasia Bunko.
I'd like some confirmation.

That would mean actually knowing it myself. Although I guess I could always get other people to post any I don't know.

In the shorter term, though, when I spend time on this I would rather be adding in older series. Which could itself get to be fairly slow work for various reasons.

Well people who actually seen and read it could provide info for you. Even if we put that extra info to a few of them it could potentially help future readers/viewers. Personally I only began to read novels recently, but could provide info for 6 novels from your list.

Thanks for your hard work~
That's almost one hundred for 4 years. Around 4-6 per season then, which is indeed what we see when looking at the next season charts lately.

As I expected, it's mainly dengeki bunko/ fujimi fantasia bunko/ MF Bunko J doing it.

Those three labels are also the ones with the highest sales. Taking only volumes that sold 10k+ in 2014, those three make up 75% of the total sales and 64% of all volumes selling that much.

Interesting numbers. You could say they have enough money to try ordering anime adaptation. Which, in return, boost their sales if successful, which gave them more money to continue that way.

You cans say though, that ujimi fantasia bunko and MF Bunko J have lots of very very oriented titles which are especially fitted for anime adaptation. Comparing those to the Gagaga bunko or the famitsu bunko LN list, well this seem far more difficult for them.
For dengeki bunko, their list of LN is so big anyway that they have enough of everything, pretty much.

It's also important to point out that female oriented labels aren't included in that data - Kadokawa Beans Bunko would be fourth on that list were it included, thanks mainly to Kokuhaku Yokou Renshuu, Shounen Onmyouji and Noushou Sakuretsu Girl. Then again, I don't think there has been an anime adaptation of a Kadokawa Beans Bunko light novel since Saiunkoku Monogatari's second season finished in 2008.

So checking the list, as I thought, Mahou shoujo ikusei keikaku will be the first anime adaptation of a title from kono light novel ga sugoi bunko (konorano bunko) then.
I'd say that's a weird choice to start with this one though, not sure it's going to work as an anime. Well, we'll see~

Hi, new to the group, just started getting into reading LNs and was curious if there is a good place to look for these to see how many volumes some have, whether they've all been translated, things along those lines. Basically so far the only thing I've read is the first three volumes of Rokka No Yuusha (btw, Zefyris, love the Flamie sig and avatar) and that was actually a fan translation. Maybe I'm better off posting this elsewhere, but since you had a pretty extensive list I figured I'd ask here first.

Beginner looking for a little direction/advice.

Wow, first post I've made in any forum/group here...guess I was pretty good at keeping up to date on my anime, but now that I want to branch out a bit more, time to hit the forums.

You probably are better off asking elsewhere but since you asked here I'll answer here.

For official translations, I think this list is pretty close to complete now for series that have already started coming out, but not for licensed series that haven't yet begun releasing (which can usually be found in the list of upcoming releases). It includes details on what volumes are out, the series' status (be careful of "discontinued" ones, particularly among older series) etc.

For fan translations, I'm not aware of any site that lists them all, and the translation groups tend to stick to themselves. That said, there are some people in the club with an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of these things - if you're looking for a specific series that isn't legally obtainable, you can try asking in the club comments.

This list on this thread bears no relation to the translation status of a series, although series with anime adaptations are more likely to be translated (both officially and unofficially) than those without, simply because the anime generates a demand for it.

If you're after a full list of all Japanese light novels, forget it. There are probably more than a thousand new series every year, with around 2500 volumes, from a multitude of labels. Some are announced months in advance, some you only find out about on the day of release (and in one slightly bizarre situation I came across a monthly release batch from a publisher that I swear was announced 4 days after it came out). Some of the labels don't have websites, others don't bother updating them. Some are defunct. Others you think are defunct and then suddenly release something for the first time in years. And then there are some labels that fall into an awkward situation in which it isn't clear whether their releases are light novels or not. And others for which some releases are light novels and others aren't. You get the picture.

Even the weekly lists in the link in my signature aren't 100% complete (although they're probably as close as you'll find... for that week) - as they're based on Amazon Japan's light novel list they don't include labels that don't sell through amazon, or labels that amazon don't consider to be light novels but other places do, or releases of things that amazon don't consider light novels now but did last month and probably will again next month.

Thanks for the reply even though this wasn't the best place to ask.

I know a complete list is impossible to track, much like keeping up to date with manga or western comics, there's just too much going on, with new titles and re-tellings popping up all the time. I guess I asked here because I recognized quite a few of the titles you listed, mostly because of what anime I have watched. In searching around the net whether through proper channels or fan sites it's still hard to get a grasp of the number of volumes some series have, or whether they are translated or not, I get that the really mainstream stuff will be translated and the lesser won't.

For example I torrented (hope that's not a no-no to mention that around here) a collection of light novels, most of which I didn't know, but it had a few series in it that I knew, a quick sampling of all the novels included showed the stuff I knew was translated, as was some of the other, but there was also quite a bit of untranslated novels within the collection.

I guess it's kind of pointless to try to keep track of all the more well known series and their volumes and their translations, I'm just kind of a completionist, so if I pick up a series I'd like to see it all the way through or at least until the writer/s give up on it. Guess I'll just have to go at random and hope that eventually I'll be able to see it through to the end.

If you're after info on how many volumes are out in Japan at present, the best way is usually just to look up the series in question.

If you're after info on how fully translated the volume is from fan translators, then your best bet is to go on the translator's website, which will usually say how far through the series they are, and compare this to the number of volumes in Japan.

If you want info for official translations, the pages on the site I linked to in the previous post contain the details of how many volumes are out in English of the series (although not all last month's releases have yet been included), which again can be compared to the number of Japanese volumes. Fully released series, such as this one are listed as "complete".

If you want to know whether or not a series is complete in Japan... I wish I knew a consistantly reliable method other than reading the books yourself or talking to someone who has. Even those won't always confirm it.

Incidentally, mentioning that you have torrented something isn't against the rules. Advertising where you found it, or asking where to find more, however, is - although the latter at least seems to be accepted by the admins of the club. In terms of the morality of it, I think majority opinion on here would be at least accepting of it if the series is unobtainable in any language that you are able to read. There are people in this club who have learned new languages in order to be able to read more light novels, but that isn't really expected.

I wouldn't advertise or ask where torrents can be obtained, I think that's kind of a general no-no on most any forums that aren't torrent specific; I know how some people can get about the subject too heh. Thanks for the info and pointing me in the right direction for official stuff I'll have to poke around a bit, as of right now there are only a few series I really want to read and they are more or less mainstream type I would think due to their having anime adaptations, anything else I could probably dig around and find fan done translations. Probably could bounce my way around from some of the anime fan-sub sites that I check on.

I've been trying to learn Japanese actually, it would be my fourth language and the other three are English, German and Swedish, soooo yeah, Japanese is a big departure not just in structure and sound, but in it's syllabic alphabet and use of kanji. So far I can only understand a little, and speak a little less, basically I could probably visit Japan and say enough to find my way around, though I would definitely be that annoying gaijin who's trying too hard to speak to the locals.

I added this season's series to the thread.

It's a bit of an odd season - the first season with no Fantasia Bunko series with light novel adaptations since Summer 2014, and only the second with no MF Bunko J adaptations since Summer 2013. On the other hand we have our first KA Esuma Bunko and Famitsu Bunko* titles since 2014 and the first Overlap Bunko title since 2013.

I also added the ENTERBRAIN sort-of-label to the list. I may add Kodansha BOX as well next time around.

*Although this isn't included in the list as Schwarzesmarken is a spin-off of Muv Luv Alternative, which was originally a visual novel.

Really, what do you guys think of these four added into the list?

Hundred:
The first volume of the LN... I honestly couldn't handle how similar it felt to IS... I was thinking of picking up the anime for the heck of it, but you know... I might just decide to pick it up again depending on what happens?
MC, imo, is retarded... StuCo Pres in this story is just to die for though~ That's probably the only thing inspiring me to at least give it a second try.

Re:Zero:
This adaptation is my obsession this summer~ <3 I seriously just adore it to the core! By the looks of its story progression thus far... It looks like the traditional 3 episodes per volume will be taken into affect this time around. First arc was handled pretty well also! Animation is just awesome too! Parts of the story were minorly changed... but it's still very well within acceptable parameters.

Netoge:
Not sure what to think about this one. It feels like this adaptation is more fluff than anything else. Opinions on it thus far?

Gakusen:
Hmmmmm, more Fluff in the season, imo ... Not much new since this is just the second season. Anyone still following the anime for Gakusen at this point?
I'm planning on getting to it eventually... Not quite ready to jump into it right now.

The manga changed a couple of parts from the novel so if anything's a bit different, that's why.
Anyhow, that's the only LN adaptation I'm watching this season and it's satisfying so far. Waiting for when they get up to vol. 2 & 3 for the really good stuff.

Out of curiousity, why is Fate/Zero listed when Schwarzesmarken isn't? I know why Schwarzesmarken isn't but I would think that that would apply to F/Z as well (since it's a prequel to the Fate/Stay Night visual novel).

I'm not personally familiar with the Muv Luv universe, but I had assumed from what I had read that Schwarzesmarken was more of a tie-in series than F/Z was.
To be honest, though, they're both in the grey area of whether or not to include. I guess it's better to add when they shouldn't be on there than not add when they should, so I'll add it now.

As for the currently airing series, I'm currently watching and enjoying all four, although I'm not entirely sure if I'll continue to enjoy Hundred as much once a few key things that are currently the main sources of my interest get revealed. It reminds me of Seiken Tsukai no World Break more than anything else actually, but it doesn't feel as though there's as much there as World Break has (not that that's saying much, but then again that's one of World Break's greatest strengths) - although that could just be because of things that haven't been revealed or hinted at yet. The other three will probably end up among my favourite anime of the season, with it so far looking like being Re:Zero (which, unless Haifuri gets really good or one of the series I haven't picked up yet turns out to be brilliant, will probably be AOTS) > Netoge > Asterisk. Still early days yet though - I've only watched 1 episode of Netoge for instance...

So I decided to pick up Hundred.
It's a shame... but I still don't feel motivated into reading the LN even with watching the anime. I thought it'd relight something in me... but I guess the series is more entertaining to watch than it is to read. I'll stick with it for now. The MC seems just a LITTLE easier to put up with.

Finally updated the thread. In case you're wondering, the delay was due to my indecision over what to do with regards to Qualidea Code. In the end I decided to just leave it out. Gi(a)rlish Number will get the same treatment next season.

This is the weirdest of seasons. Only 2 light novel adaptations, and neither of them from big labels. It also marks the end of an entire year without a single Fujimi Fantasia Bunko adaptation.

I was hoping to see Gi(a)rlish Number appears in this season, but I guess it doesn't count since, technically, it's on Dengeki Magazine...
And welp, the only thing worth mentioning is Magical Girl Raising Project which everyone is hyping up right now. There don't seem to be many adaptation next season also.

It wouldn't surprise me if one of the series that was announced previously with no date turned out to be coming in Winter. And we could still see new announcements for it yet. Otherwise it will be a very quiet season - not just on the light novel adaptation front but in general.

Gi(a)rlish Number has been left off for the same reason as Qualidea Code - it's part of a franchise of which the novel is another part, not an adaptation or spin-off specifically of a light novel.

Updated for this season continuing the trend of a near total absence of light novel adaptations (next season has rather more though).

I'm not including Taiwanese publishers of Chinese webnovels on this thread, so Reikenzan is not included.

Added another year back after finally deciding to just include Tokuma Novels Edge (the label was defunct before I got into light novels and there's barely any info on it left nowadays - if anyone knows whether this actually was a light novel label or not then it would be good to know, with sources of your info of course). We also finally get light novels from a label aimed at girls appearing on the list...

Updated for this season, which, after several seasons with many of the big names completely missing, sees some of them having 2 anime adaptations at once.

Updated for this season, with 60% of all light novel adaptations currently airing being from Fujimi Fantasia Bunko...

(I hadn't bothered posting with the previous updates - this has been updated every season)
