I'm sure you didn't read all the manga for now, because there's vampire, monster, and human but no cyborg or android.

Since Itsuki came with it, i would like to hear how others feel about this show.

As for me:
Cyberpunk doesn't need android or cyborgs, neither Pale Cocoon nor Serial Experiment Lain have some .
Also Vampire are featured in Cyber City Oedo, which is definitively cyberpunk...

That being said, i am not completly sure about Gantz even if i think it's kinda cyberpunk, i agree it's at the very limit of the genre. The society is pretty much ours (or rather the japanese society but you get my point), but there are futuristic elements, hence "near future". The fact that there are 2 different realities is what it make "cyberpunk" at least for me.
Do you like Cyborgs, near future settings or the merging between Man and Machine? Then check out the Cyberpunk Club!

i think cyberpunk and also steampunk deals with the urban life & technology. they represent a kind of utopia/disutopia. i am at episode 10 of second season and gantz doesn't seem to be a cyberpunk. it has a story of aliens and action, nothing more..

I agree Gantz has plenty of cyber not enough punk! Though the last 6 eps definitely show the lower side of human society.

Yeah, as i say before, it's not cyber-punk for me.
The best exemple for me will be Blame! for cyber-punk, but if you guys think Gantz is cyber-punk, why not.

I vaguely remember this argument...and would rather not rekindle it being especially wary of the eloquent, more well-read members of the group.
However, yes I did want this to be on the list from the get-go, or rather from the moment I made the request, until now.
Gantz is to me cyberpunk, not "classic" cyberpunk as 'defined,' and will remain such in my most humble opinion.
Either way it's in the "eye of the beholder" as it is said.

Time's winged chariot hurrying near,
And yonder all before us lie,
Deserts of vast eternity."

Well personally I wouln't call it a Cyberpunk. But I wouldn't argue against someone who did (and I easily get into arguments). Very borderline Cyberpunk if at all.

To me Gantz was just a massive excuse to watch people die in horribly painful ways. I mean, sure there was some futuristic elements in it but ... I'm not 100% on the whole Cyberpunk label. I mean, I think it's Sci-fi and action but for me I can't just plaster Cybrepunk on it as a genre. I think Gantz is just one of those shows that are kind of in a category all their own.

It's semi-cyber-punk. If Cyberpunk was a 10, Gantz would be a 9.5, almost there, but just doesn't make the mark. The manga is a ton better than the anime IMO though. Anime suffers from bad pacing, manga does not however.

It suffers from a bad ending. It was a bad cliff hanger. We didn't even find out what the hell Gantz is. I'm going to have to read the manga

Why in the hell Gantz is cyberpunk? The whole thing is happening in present day and the technology is at today's level. There's no corporations and cyborgs there. It's just some misterious shit happens. It'll be the same if Aliens will give a group of two or three men some kind of blasters. It won't be a cyberpunk. So imho Gantz is neither.

Maybe not explicit or classic cyberpunk but it definitely has some elements. The Gantz sphere and how it brings people in a totally not-present-day-technology way to play a sort of virtual game, giving them very futuristic weapons and suits I guess it the biggest piece of cyberpunk there.

The fact that there are "aliens" alongside with fantasy and mythological creatures as well as some high-tech stuff involved makes it doubtful it's just a good old "aliens taking over the Earth" type of sci-fi scenario. Nah, it really feels like a virual game -- all the messing with reality recently might be just the author trying to lead the audience away from figuring it all out too early thus preventing it from becoming too predictable and repetitive (heh, which it was really becoming=)

I'll do the most simple and probably one of the most solid arguments here:

Semi-but-not-enough-cyber-punk. Simple! :D

It will be fully clear when it's finished because the author might not have decided yet :D

Actually I just thought if cyberpunk, roughly speaking, can be reduced to "low life, high tech" then isn't the whole Gantz game just about that - a sick allusion to violent video game that utilizes a lot of high-tech means of killing and where human life ain't worth shit (just points)? In this sense it's definitely cyberpunk.

Also, I think people tend to confuse the genre's cliches (like robots, cyberization, VR, and evil corporations) with its basic ideas which mostly concern the human nature and humanitarian values in the light of technological advance of society.
Here's a good article about cyberpunk that talks about that: http://www.sff.net/people/moriarty/cyberpunk.html

BTW, Gantz is listed as cyberpunk here: http://www.cyberpunkreview.com/wiki/index.php?title=Cyberpunk_Graphic_Novels

You can't define cyberpunk.
And you can't seem to define Gantz.
Does it necessarily have to fit in one or the other genre? No not all all.
If anything it's a cross-genre series.
Either way you lose because your opinions mean nothing, the same as mine.

So bicker more and get no where.

It's a good series, go read it instead and stfu.

*fixed*

Gantz is pushing it's limits for cp. though i'd say it gives off a similar essence as most cp's do.

I don't feel that Gantz is cyberpunk at all. Sci-fi yes but not cyberpunk. Where are the computers or hacking or misuse of techknowledgy? Nobody's life revolves around computers or networks. I'm not tying invalidate anybody's oppinions but I just don't see any aspects of cyberpunk in this. It's science fiction but it lacks any of the themes or items that you find in cyberpunk.

I know this is really old but why can't anime be cyberpunk? It's just a genre. GITS specially the movie is a good example. Psycho Pass is another good example. If it's centered around people using and abusing networks, computers or future tech I believe it fits the genre. Notice I say abusing technology. When it's being hacked or used illegally like body mods or weapons. Just using computers or networks doesn't count in my opinion. It's when people do stuff with it that it wasn't intended for. It's more like ghetto suburbs where people are killed for their implants or other street level crimes that involve tech we don't have now. As opposed to space opera stories. Cyberpunk has street thugs that take drugs and hack and live in places where future tech hasn't improved anything but made people slaves to it. It makes us question if all these advances are helping or hindering society. It's created new problems of its own.

Blame! and Biomega are good examples of cyberpunk manga. They are desolate places where science has run amok and has created new problems.

Like others have said, there's plenty of "cyber" in Gantz, not enough "punk".

Well, but there's a little punk... but it's more like... The Descendants or Fugazi, instead of The Misfits or The Dead Kennedys. That's how I see it, at least.
