| He had actually been THIS close to defeating the menace that is Kira Yoshikage but his two taunting gestures towards him ended up screwing him over at the moments he needed to be careful at the most. If he had not glared or given him that coffee cup, he probably would've been dead by then. |

| I cannot criticize the kid in good faith, he's an emotional boy, he had a burst of confidence and he showed it, but it really did burn him. Even in the moment I had to question what the hell he was doing. It must have felt good to rub it in Kira's face, but if only he acted like he did the other days and didn't change fate too much, he would have easily killed Kira. Nonetheless, I do have a sneaking suspicion that something he has done or will do shall change the course of the future and we will have a swap to the main character's perspectives soon. Araki does like the sacrificial move nudging the heroes forward, this goes all the way back to Poco in Phantom Blood who is comparable to Hayato; even trying to protect his older sister and summoning the courage to do so. That said, I have to say again how unexpected this arc is. Kira's new power is incredibly specific and overpowered, but what it does is create a scenario I would have never anticipated. We have the perspective of a minor character trying to protect his mom by traversing a specific and suffocating set of rules, and a Groundhog Day time loop. He is underpowered, but has the advantage of retained memory to abuse Kira's ignorance. |
