Damn! As some guy once said, right in the feels bro!
This episode catched me so hard, I had the desire to watch it multiple languages, just to consume every bit of Violet crying and expressing her feelings at the end of the episode! Just a sweet masterpiece!

This is definitely the most emotional I've been WHILE I'm watching an anime episode.

I couldn't stop my tears when I saw those scenes of Ann and her mother bonding then slowly fades away. To think that her mom had Violet write letters for the next 50 YEARS!!! Nothing can really match the love of a mother. T_T

This episode alone makes the whole show 10/10 for me. What a masterpiece.

This was... the first time I cried for something I watched. I'm at almost my 20s, a grown up man, crying for an anime episode

It felt like filler.

Listen, I get that this was supposed to be an emotional episode. But I came into this wanting to know more about the Major and Violet's search for him, and instead we get a story about an annoying daughter who grows up without her mother.

I think the real reason I'm so pissed is because I hate these "ageing" stories where people grow old and die.

The best episode which I'll rank as #1 due to its powerful but also heart-rending episode with Ann and her mother's letters delivered to her on her birthday from a young age until 50 years later. Violet's finally achieved her ability of empathy at the end when she starts crying to ease the pressure of witnessing Ann and her mother's promise!

My mother and I actually destroyed this episode in the end. 😭😭 However, the beginning was so beautiful and how sharp Ann was with her theories. But to be alone until the age of 18 and that is extremely sad. 😭😭💔 And Violet how hard she refrained from showing a sad feeling in front of Ann. 😭😭💔

50 years worth of letters. Yikes. I hate to be a downer, but it's mighty bold for the mother to assume her daughter would live that long. Still, what a great idea tho.

Not a bad episode, tbh. It certainly had the most feels of all of the episodes thus far. Heck, even Violet was on the verge of tears during her stay and actually in tears at the end.

For fucks sake, at the very moment I have completed 392 shorter and longer anime and I didn't cry even once no matter what. But this... This episode made me cry during watching for the first time I remember so far. Beautiful, truly beautiful.

I rarely give 10's before I complete shows but after this masterclass of a episode, I don't care, it's a 10.

The sheer amount of emotion and sadness in this, easily top 5 overall favorite anime episodes of all time for me.

Writing letters for your daughter in advance is a great idea (though 50 years might be overkill), but I found myself identifying with Ann's POV throughout most of the episode (the way it was presented even seemed to nudge the viewer in that direction), and shared much of her frustration with the whole process.

Remember people, lying to your kid, even with the best intentions, will come back to bite you sooner or later. Ann was a child, not a moron, she could tell her mom was dying. Trying to shield her from this fact only caused her further grief.

And... why exactly were those letters such a huge secret, anyway? Why couldn't they tell her they were writing her letters that will be delivered in the future? Yeah, I know, drama reasons. :/

This is gotta be the most emotional thing I've watch ever watch

"Love ones will always watch over you" this episode gotta be the closest thing to this statement truly mothers love to their child is such a wonderful thing

The ending scene just made me cry so much though for some reason my left eyes are the only eyes that shed tear

I've never really expected this episode could be so impactful cause violet character arc is pretty much done the last episode felt like it was the end of violet monogatari and now where back to being very episodic and i ain't complaining this is gotta be the best episodic episode I've seen in my life

My first thought: "Wow, Violet looks Mary Poppins as all hell."
My second thought: "Wow, this episode was fantastic."

After 10 episodes, I think I'm still coming up with new impressions of Violet Evergarden, but I think I've settled on a clear enough view. I like Violet Evergarden more as an episodic adventure, where Violet gets to learn and experience the world through the people she meets. I dislike Violet Evergarden when it focuses too much on Violet's past, as it gets bogged down with various nuances that hinder the show's qualities.

In terms of audiovisuals, Violet Evergarden is a beautiful anime, and its episodic short stories allow Violet to explore the world, putting those audiovisuals in full display. Violet's past, however, is dark, gritty, violent, and devoid of the humanity shown in Violet's present. I understand the significance of Gilbert's influence, and it's nice to have that background to both flesh out Violet's character and explore the world's history, but I just want to see more of Violet's colorfully vibrant present.

With the episode itself, it was a wonderful and heartfelt story with a few clever twists and choices for dialogue. I loved seeing Violet truly take this episode's events to heart as she empathizes with Ann's feelings of loneliness. In some ways, this episode reminds me of Mushi-shi, where we get a future glimpse of a traveler's effects on a person they visit. In other respects, the show also reminds me of Kokoro Toshokan, where the vibrant and goofy present is built on a tragic past, and the show revolves around treasuring the present by acknowledging past sacrifices.

I've had mixed feelings so far, but for what it's worth, I truly did enjoy this episode.

So sublime watching Kyoto Animations progress from the relatively untidy lines of K-On!, to the neatness of Sound Euphonium 1 & 2, to realistic eye candy and art styles of VE and then Liz and the Blue Bird.
Cannot wait for Sound Euphonium 3!

I know right?

I was like uahhhhhhhh why can't you sit with your child and let her hold your hand and exactly like you said write the letters with her (she'd forget the content ... most of it ... I mean does any one remember what they wrote in their work books at school when they were really young. You might vaguely remember some details in a conversation or two but who would remember the contents of 7 days of letter writing).

They could have involved her saying every now and then, so what would you like to say to your future self when you've opened your first bug shop and all laughed. She'd have the letters years later and she'd have the memory of her mothers laughter. And when she asked a question, what does that mean mother? she could have explained, thus actually giving her child valuable life lessons and insights (and violet could have put it in a letter. It was so frustrating. They could have even turned the letter writing process into a family history thing with the letters serving as a written record for future reference.

50 letters (50 years of letters?) was over-kill. Who's to say the company would still be in business for more than a few years, Or the company's store of letters to be delivered would be damaged in a fire or in a flood. Or in an air raid if war resumed and the city was bombed or something.

And those "guests" who were taking up her mother's time before violet came. They were going to come right back and resume where they left off taking up her mother's time. It was so agonizing and unfair .

Although it was unintentional, I felt Ann was suffering from terrible neglect. When she came at night and asked how do you eat bread that is so hard you cannot eat it....... smh.

She was desperately alone. The only living things she had really to play with were bugs. I wish she could have just sat with her daughter out in the garden at her play table and watched as she collected bugs for her.in between writing stuff with Violet. And maybe they'd talked about who was going to take Ann in. With Violet reflecting upon her own experience which was a shock to her: [i]These are the Evergardens. Congratulations. You're going to live with them now. Goodbye![/ii] and finding a way to suggest they involve Violet in the plans for her own future,

They could have had a week of tea parties in the garden with the housekeeper.

i don't necessarily give ratings to episodes because i'm lazy but this really deserves the 5. it's the most emotionally potent thing i've ever seen in not just anime, but any animated media. if you've struggled and still fear death, you really FEEL what this episode's about. </3
