@FutoiOtaku I meant the manga, not the books, though yeah, if it's translated to Japanese, there could be stuff that's minor quibbles.

I didn’t realise you addressed a few other topics and people when I replied, but I understand now. It’s a weird one for me when a manga isn’t the original source material, even more so a western classic novel! I would never consider reading a manga of a proper book, for example I love the Seishun Buta Yarou light novels but the manga seems pointless.
Anime of western books like The Borrowers work well tho, but anime of classic works tend to limit the vocabulary to more old fashioned and polite phrasing. It’s interesting how it’s done in Japanese (I study it casually) but English subs tend to lean on the original work rather than re-interpreting the Japanese.
@FutoiOtaku There is at least one other manga by the name Anne Shirley, though probably nearly half a dozen manga if I looked closer at the entries for adaptation.

I think the only manga I can think of that have been adaptations of novels to my recollection are Another and Battle Royale. Weird that I can recall 2, though I think manga and light novels take the cake. I still want to watch Edge of Tomorrow, because I remember when the manga was new and then I'd heard, "Oh btw, they're making it into a live action movie with Tom Cruise"

I think I liked much more a story when Anne was a kid. It seems author of books had no idea how to run a story with adult Anne.

Also, I hated a plot with her rejecting Gilbert and taking some NPC. According to last episode she accepted Gilbert over 2 years after rejection. Poor dude. Anne was cute but really dumb sometimes. But well, that's life. A lot of chicks are like this.

Dude. This story is very old and they did that beeeessst to stay close to the real novel romance and adult Anne. Speaking for myself I felt really relatable to adult Anne.. Specially in university. I think it was gorgeous, is a time of exploring, of being constantly undecided, making mistakes, realizing that what you thought you wanted actually wasn't what you needed.

@holdingnothing if you want a good action movie with a great reset plot, go for it! Really good. But it has NO feeling of Japanese culture or origin whatsoever, pure Hollywood. I enjoyed at the cinema on release but only found out much later what the source was!

**I cried when Gilbert said, “I cannot love anyone but you,” and when Anne told Matthew, “I’m so glad to be your daughter.” Those moments felt like beautiful callbacks to the very beginning of the story, and they hit me so hard. 💔✨

I absolutely loved this anime. The animation style was breathtaking—every sunset looked like a painting, making the whole experience feel soft, dreamy, and relaxing to watch.

The narrative struck such a delicate balance: hopeful and whimsical, yet unafraid to touch on the profound and painful realities of life—death, mourning, love, confusion, and the unshakable bonds of friendship.

Anne has always been one of my favorite characters in literature, and seeing her here felt like being reunited with an old friend. I loved how she brought her fresh, curious perspective into every scene. And what makes this story so unique is that we actually get to grow with her. Watching Anne evolve from a child into a young woman, and then into an adult, is something so rare in stories—few tales allow you to walk alongside a character for so long.

This anime captured that journey so beautifully. It filled my heart with tears, laughter, and quiet awe. 🌿🕊️

Despite the cliff note approach this is a wonderful series. If there is a season 2 I hope they take their time for conversations and thoughts more.

For now AOTY and for sure in the top ten!

@FutoiOtaku I mean, it has Tom Cruise in it, I feel like there's enough executive manipulation based on him being involved. Not sure how well Minority Report was received, but I can honestly just reference the 2017 Mummy film to show how he kind of has increasingly been a pimple on the ass of certain projects he's associated to

This anime is probably one of the most faithful adaptations of the original books, and I think that's, ironically, it's 2nds biggest weakness. Some events just don't translate too well to animation. (Or any medium outside of writing, for that matter).

Unlike many people here, I don't think it's unrealistic at all for everyone to be happy and fulfilled with their life. I also don't think it's always bad for a story to be unrealistic. When authors sit down to write, they aren't trying to tell you an anecdote, they ate using characters and events to entertain and explore certain themes.

I think @Wojtini21 idea of her having a baby with Royal is corny at best and gross at worst. Even if realism is what you want, bad things happening =/= "Realistic". And the other users being all like "Oh, poor Gilbert, he waited so long for Anne" are also being quite corny. God forbid a girl is scared to ruin the friendship by making it romantic.

However, I will say, this final episode would have been a lot better had it been split into two. This show had starnge pacing issues from the start, but I think It's most obvious on the second part of this episode, where everything seems to be resolved as quickly as possible, without many of the details from the books, just the big events. I think a lot less people would have such insane ideas on how to "improve" this ending if the show had been a bit slower with it's story-telling.

Now go watch the 1979 one.

Pacing issues a little too much for my liking and the second half didn't really hold up as well for me. Anne's character was interesting at the start but then got a little annoying at times especially around midway, and I'm a little surprised Gilbert harboured all those feelings lol. But that aside, I thought it was a fine show overall. I loved the setting, general vibes and the theme songs too.

Got to settle with a solid 6/10 here.

I haven't read the original work, but I wonder if it had deeper content. While it's true that faithfully adapting that into an anime is impossible, I do feel it could have used a bit more substance. Still, we should see this as having solidly accomplished the bare minimum.

Gilbert dying and Anne makes a U turn ok, but would have been a better scene if she had stayed when Gilbert woke up.

Also her friends got a married scene while Anne does not, so I too will be hoping there is a S2 in the works.

Since I've read all the Anne books, I knew it'd end this way. Still very nice to see.

I'm really holding out hope that they'll adapt Anne of Windy Poplars (her principalship of Summerside High) and Anne's House of Dreams (her wedding and marriage to Gilbert). Especially the last one, of all the adult Anne stories, to me, it's the most haunting.

So sad that this masterpiece has come to an end!

when i started it, i went in with no expectations and was completely blown away by the sheer force that was, Anne Shirley. The part where she was a child was my favorite!

i was literally laughing like an idiot every episode. The later parts werent as funny but were more mature and relateable. I went in with no expectations and it ended up becoming my favorite anime of the year, not counting continuataions. 10/10 show, absolute masterpiece! ❤️

mannnnnnnn, truly a beautiful story. very realistic too tbh. loved it. seeing her turn down Roy was painful and seeing her realize she had always been in love with Gil was a huge relief and I was like: "FINALLY, BROOOOO!!!!!!" even with the ups and downs of Anne, I can't hate her for that. good stuff. hope it gets a sequel someday. 9/10.
the dub was truly peak. thank you Monica Flatley for a job well done voicing Anne.
a job well done to the dub cast too.

@Softhenic03 There could be a movie that adapts the next novel, since it has enough to probably do a decent 2 hour feature, I'd hazard. And while it'd have some bad moments for Anne and Gilbert, it'd still end on a good note, with lots of hope

@Lucifrost House of Dreams, where they're married

I think you meant Windy Poplars, but now I'm reminded that I should try to properly read Wind in the Willows, Disney's adaptation feels like they had to chop it down, since it could easily have been a film like they originally had planned. Legend of Sleepy Hollow, not sure how they'd expand it to feature length

You didn't answer my question.

Wikipedia says UK and Australia published the book under the name of "Windy Willows," the title Montgomery herself chose. Additionally, the Poplars version was censored.

@Lucifrost Published Windy Poplars as Windy Willows? That's still not the one, though it does get tricky if we're talking chronologically versus publication order, which Windy Willows is #7, but is basically right after where the anime leaves off. And as to whether it would fit in, House of Windy Willows + House of Dreams would probably need 2 movies, depending on max length for a feature film release. House of Dreams is the one I'm thinking of with the moments that could hit really hard. Windy Willows is where the cat Dusty shows up, apparently Rusty not made up for the latter part, Dusty a different cat when Anne was living in the titular Windy Willows

All this talk of the Green Gables novels written by "Lucy," has me thinking of the Green Knowe series, also written by a Lucy. It would make a great anime too!

@Lucifrost I was confirming something on Nathaniel Hawthorne and had to pause at a slightly less known book of his, House of the Seven Gables.

And my brain slightly remembered it from a cover of a book we have in the Juvenile/Children's library section of the library I work at, Green Ember, a series that apparently has 12 books, featuring anthropomorphic rabbits, almost like the author read Watership Down and thought, "I can make something cool without being super brutal" Not that I can say as if I've read it, but the cover art looks fantastic

No, Gilbert doesn't really appear that much in the books. It's a very Anne-centric story; stuff like Royal kissing Anne, Gilbert & Christine meeting up with Anne, and Anne having a Roy delusion moment were anime additions even.

Time flows onward, life goes on. Everyone's graduated, Jane marries a millionaire, Diana has a little boy, Phil marries Jonas, Davy looks like a middle-schooler.

And Anne goes aaaall the way back to the beginning, to take the step that she could've/should've taken all those years ago.

Genuinely loved this anime. Its flaws almost didn't matter, compared to how entertaining, heartwarming and sneakily profound it was. So glad to have watched this.

Cute ending! I loved that! It was sort of weird at first how this last episode almost felt like an epilogue, but it actually worked with Anne's story not coming to any sort of conclusion yet but reaching one here. Gilbert and her are so cute together! I love the scene with the farmer and when Roy appeared by her bed. There was a hint of magic in this one. My only complaint about this episode is that Gilbert's illness was so brief. It probably should have gone over at least two episodes? But, yes, I really loved this series and the ending!

This series perfectly captures the excitement and melancholy that comes with getting older, from new ventures that make the world feel like your oyster to the sudden and cruel losses that await. The pacing definitely showed some oddities especially this recent batch where it feels like 10 months blaze by in between a single scene at time but the pay off was still effective. Anne is an interesting protagonist because shes just so generally foolish, makes so many mistakes for incredibly dumb reasons yet she always remains charming in spite of that and makes the times she succeeds moments of triumph even when its hardships were almost entirely self wrought.

I think episode 19 in particular will stick with me the most, I think that episode is a masterpiece that works as this heartbreaking but beautiful sentiment of facing death but also one that feels like it elevates the series as a whole over how it ties in thematically. In a way this is a series about death as the focus, but not the actual end but rather the inevitability of it emphasizes the need to live in the moment now, cherish your loved ones, dont second guess your passions and dreams, and find the joys in everyday life. Its going to happen to everyone you know and you yourself and you will never know when it will for any of us but that only makes it all the more important to cherish those things big and little. Be the childhood love you kept putting off, family, your writing interests, or even things as simple as the lovely name of the house you boarded at. Its a very small moment but something that sticks out to me is the tree anne so fondly loved her whole life from her window simply just being gone after a storm, one that marrilla says has been there since she and mathew were young, its just another one small part of life that can come to an end unexpectedly and anticlimactically as your environment changes around you but even something as small as this coming to an end in an inevitability that was better spent cherishing than lamenting the loss.

I can recognize the flaws here, even having not read the books I can see they are rushed, however whats here was still so impactful I really can't imagine this not being a really solid 9/10 typing all this out, it really taps into this relatable human condition that has aged unbelievably well given that the story itself is literally a century old.

It really came to an end. I thought the worst was coming; my senses were inclined to believe it.
As I've said before, Anne is incredibly lucky! Life always seems to be on her side.
I'm not saying she doesn't deserve it but sometimes things go so well for her that it borders on the ridiculous.
When that old man gave her the good news, it felt like a spiritual encounter... That's how I felt.
Well. I'm eager to see how the other characters fare in their future lives but I think this ending isn't bad.
(Although it's very convenient)
To sum up the whole anime, from my point of view, I enjoyed Anne's personality much more as an adult...
But the overall atmosphere of the first few episodes was necessary at times.
With this, I conclude 2025.
