Tbh I get triggered when they do things like that they just watch some pretty famous anime and say that they are a big anime fan that really pisses me off, I know a girl that isn't my friend but doesn't really watch some anime she was just pretending so that she can be famous and start sharing some anime post on the internet and when she shared some one of my favorite anime I thought that I could ask her and maybe we could be good friends but as soon as I talk to her and asked some questions she was talking nonsense and kept on pretending to be an anime fan but in the end she didn't answer my question, for some reason it kinda annoyed me until now she still keep on sharing some anime post on internet.

Did she like the anime? If she did, that makes her an anime fan, wether or not it pisses you off. Doesn’t matter if they watch it for popularity. If they like it, then they’re anime fans.

Very true, I don't know why people do that... if you can't finish it then drop it or stall it and try later. Adding anime into 'complete' is lying and is indeed fake. I agree with this.

Because they don't want others to think they are scrubs who are new to anime

or because they think having a lot of anime seen makes others treat them more serious like "i am a real anime veteran my taste is more valid than yours"
I totally agree with that they just want to be the attention and gonna start on comparing the anime that you have finished and talked trash to you, that really annoyed me so much.

But we were ALL new to anime at some point. For me it was back in 2010 (or it could have been 2011... it's been too long lol) and it takes YEARS to accumulate a large list. Or rather, that's been my experience, anyway. People should just enjoy anime for what it is... an outlet, a hobby, and entertainment. It honestly shouldn't matter how much you've seen because imo it doesn't classify as better simply because you've seen more or less than someone. Everyone's taste is subjective. I KNOW I love series that other people can't stand and there are several people out there who love series that I can't stand. Doesn't make my taste better than someone else's it just means we are different people who are fans of different series. The idea that they think they need more anime in their list to justify having more valid taste then someone else is just sad...

oh I guess there is also one more case

a case when a person is involved in a fandom of a long running franchise

and they spend hours every day reposting artworks, socialising with other fans and making theories. they gain status and rank in the fandom, they add friends from fandom, they become important person in community

but, as years go on, their interest in franchise wanes. Often franchises go to shit as new sequels are forcefully produced, and it's simply not the same anymore. But leaving the fandom one invested THIS much time and effort into is no longer an option.

So they continue discussing things with their friends....learn all the plots from memes and chat discussions and tweets without actually watching or reading subsequent seasons anymore...actively voice their opinions and continue being appreciated for it.....they don't feel like watching anymore, but don't want to lose their status in fandom, either.

So it's time for couple of innocent lies, right? it won't hurt to cheat a little bit and add this anime as finished, we learned the plot from chats and memes anyway, right?

right?

well I don't know wether she watched it or not she just said that "It was good and it's my favorite anime" and I asked her on what part of the anime scenes that she liked but she just spoke an answer that wasn't on the story and after that she won't answer my question anymore.

Agreed that's fake as well. Honestly, just saying 'I lost interest after___' would be better. For example I read the entire Naruto manga but after they killed off a favorite character during the war arc which I could handle reading in the manga I found I couldn't watch it in the anime so I stopped watching the anime after that bit. So Naruto Shippuuden is still in my stalled list YEARS later. I invested so much time in the series (stalled on episode 376 -_-") that I DO plan to actually finish watching it, but gathering the enthusiasm to do so, especially as I DESPISED the ending of the series, is hard to do. So yes, faking like you have followed along with a series is something a fake anime fan would do.

The only time I've been judgmental enough to legitimately think of someone as a fake fan was when I tried talking about DBZ to this dude wearing a Ghost Nappa hoodie, and halfway through the conversation he let me know that he had only seen the TFS Abridged series.

Gatekeepers are more along the lines of fake fans, since you're caring more about appearances than the actual content itself.

lol says the one that has only seen the most mainstream of anime

I just started watching seasonals this year so I'm already an anime fan.

and is that how you consider a person to be an anime fan ? each to their own I guess . You like anime , have watched any anime and you are an anime fan , that's it

People who only watch mainstream popular anime aren't fake fans. Fake fans are people who haven't watched any anime or hate literally every anime they've seen yet still pretend to like anime for whatever reason.

I don't card people, but casuals don't usually bother me. I mean most people I know haven't spent 20+ years down the rabbit hole. Although, it's not hard to be an anime fan in my book, the only qualification is having seen more than 1 anime (that's not from the same franchise).

That term doesn't exist unless you're a non-anime person using an anime pfp and insulting anime in general or weebs. This is very rare to happen since they almost always don't even use an anime character as pfp lmao.
