The way Brook was telling the story and playing guitar for instrumentals and later sung on the journey to Viper made me wish he played music more. I imagine a world where, once Brook joined the crew, he created most of the soundtrack and it was diegetic. This wouldn’t work all the time, but it wouldn’t hurt to have him play more. As One Piece has gone on, my favourite characters have cycled out. It’s not that I don’t love Luffy, Usopp, and Zoro, but I’ve thought about them a lot and even Luffy, who was initially characterized by never knowing what he’d do next, feels expected in the current day. Due to this, my most enjoyed characters have changed. I think currently, the three I love seeing the most are Sanji, Brook, and Robin, but I adore Franky as well. I look forward to seeing them get any spotlight they can. Franky holds a special place to me because, although I view Luffy as a symbol of what it means to be free and have a good life, he lives entirely instinctually, whereas Franky who has done things as crazy as Luffy seems to rationalize that freedom. Dressrosa is a great example, we can see when he thinks things through and acts intelligently and cautiously, yet he is also willing to throw away any logical reason not to do something because he knows the importance of fighting for it. Such as sending Luffy into the trap of the colosseum, or y'know attempting to stop a train with his body. That is something I am able to relate with beyond being a symbol, a thought process I can actually emulate. That said, Luffy defined those rules for me and I will always hold him as an icon for that.
The bug scene wasn’t incredible. It was one of the scenes where everyone kicks butt using their patented moves, yada yada. It offers little new information excluding the life of Minks which have to avoid such creatures, but it did offer some content I did much appreciate. Franky nipple light attraction was hilarious, but seeing Brook’s unique strengths, and with him, anyone’s unique strengths that we don’t often see, is always great. Brook not being able to be dried up by Hordy’s goon or the bugs, or not feeling heat or cold, or being able to deal with poison because it won’t corrupt his lack of lungs, or being able to enter petrification gas with his soul is all stuff that allows us to appreciate the utility of Brook. It's those rare moments that come up and remind us how unique the crew really is. Chopper’s fur was mentioned, in that fur makes it harder for the bugs to kill their targets. And armament haki being used was a good use too. Overall, I did like this scene despite it feeling a little pointless. Of course, all of this could be explored in a more interesting manner, in a more necessary encounter.
Entering Viper’s place, we had an angry Chopper treating Viper like Zoro when he refuses to wear his bandages and falling in love with a furry girl, which makes sense and shows he has perhaps grown up a little. All good stuff. We had another pretty and quiet Zoro scene of him resting and thinking alone, possibly about Sanji. We saw more of the mysteriously important Whale Tree, and we caught up with Viper. I particularly like that all these big manly animal-guys like Dogstorm, Viper, or BB are all adorable with their animal quirks like chasing bananas, bones, or balls. Normally this kind of cute behavior is reserved for more traditionally cute animal people like catgirls. Moe manly animals are a delicacy. Brook loves Viper as childish and stubborn and cute as he can be, a total fanboy, which was a nice quality to give Brook. And it finished with Pekoms having shielded himself with his shell and being open about the marriage, I am still unsure how far he will go to help the Straw Hats though. That said, he did mention that Sanji comes from a mythical evil army of warmonger assassins called Germa 66 and his father is the head of them.
Overall I’ve lost some interest in OP recently. I don’t feel I get many new and interesting sides of the main cast when at one point my episode to episode growing to understand them was a huge appeal. An appeal that made even the slowest of episodes interesting. This wouldn’t be an issue, even when the characters play by what I expect them to do, they are still good and fun characters, however, with the slow plot and a lack of interest in the people of Zou, I find myself feeling mostly indifferent to some of these episodes when in the past I was always thrilled to be watching. I contemplated taking a break, that something was wrong, but I don’t know if a break would fix this. However, with focus on developing Sanji, one of my newer favorite Straw Hats, focus on Big Mom and Kaido and their subordinates who I am fascinated with, with Law and the Samurai nearby, and an overall interest in the state of the world, I am still hopeful going forward! The Bege and Pekoms episode and the Sanji scene in the next were two of my favorite scenes in recent history with Bege going so far to potentially be the kind of villain I've always wanted. |
