Hahaha. That's so bad. You're not even trying to be a part of the discussion. I can understand if it's more than one page but at least listen to other people's opinions. You might surprise yourself.
So me stating my opinion on the subject, is equal to not even trying to be a part of the discussion, ok mate, what ever floats your boat.

No I'm not trying to attack you. I'm just saying... a discussion is like you take in ideas and you give your own. Giving your own is just part of it.

Also, whatever floats your boat too.

I do think your wrong about CG though. Howl's moving castle has tons of it and I think that animation would be a lot weaker without it.

I would not have liked Sidonia as much if it didn't have CGI. I think it really brought out the anime.

It's cancer, especially if they only slipped some CGI only for certain action scene then go back to regular style

CGI is pretty alright I think, I actually kind of like it? It depends on the setting of the anime I guess?????

Anime - it's not something that can be thought of in a hall for conferences. It is made out of strange juices current from the brain of animators.

I treat cel-shaded CGI anime like a plague. I have nothing against CGI in general, but cel-shaded anime CGI is what I consider the worst form of animation. I really hate it that much.

The problem with this kind of CGI is that it's animated at something like 4 frames per second instead of the standard 24. It makes the movements look extremely stiff and awkward.
Also, I can't stand the art that Polygon uses for their series. It makes everything look even worse than it already is.

Just to clarify, I do realize there's multiple forms of CGI but only I'm addressing the cel-shaded looks that they tend to use for TV anime. Stuff from Polygon, Sanzigen and that other studio for the upcoming Berserk anime.

Okay, I'm done. Sorry for the little rant.

If it's done well and adds to story, I don't mind it. If it's done as a gimmick just to showcase the visuals and cover for a bad story, that's a problem.

I don't care as long as it is looking good and the story/chars are intersting. Liked Ajin. I did not even notice there was CGI. Usually this is often used with mecha and mechs or other technical things, isn't it? Some people said Ajin the characters also were CGI? Did not notice it until someone mentioned it and I liked the visuals. Also story was interesting. So I liked that anime.

The main issue with CGI is it´s expensive as hell.

Advent children is the best example of good japanese CGI.

This is a CGI clip from fucking Blizzard. A 3 minute short like this took that company 6 months to make. A 3 minute short where barely anything happens, now imagine a japanese Studio doing that for a hour long Movie or a 7 episode OVA. Aint gonna happen, forgett it.

Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within nearly bankrupted Square Enix back in the day, though they pioneered the media for the japanese market.

CGI in normal Anime mostly ranges from horrible shit (Watch Episode 4 of Phoenix Wright, which is a recent example) to at least acceptable. I can't think of any good CGI in non-Mecha anime atm, but as for Mecha CGI Expelled from Paradise and the Code Geass movies f.e. had pretty good CGI and I don´t have problems with good-looking CGI as that, but sadly most of it looks horribly out of place and doesn't fit.
For full-CGI Anime I've only seen Knights of Sidonia and I was really surprised. I am not the biggest fan of CGI, so I wasn't really expecting too much, but in the end I found the art of SnK gorgeous. If done good, I have no problem with CGI, but I still prefer 2D.

Actually I don't think it's that bad they're trying to use it and are experimenting with it. Personally I'm not a fan of how static the CGI looks in the transformation sequences in Sailor Moon Crystal, but I honestly think they can get better.

I mean, Pixar didn't start by making beautiful CGI films like Inside Out either, their early animations looked pretty shitty. Same goes for Dreamworks, who started out with 2D animation.

All I'm saying is, the anime industry has been exclusively 2D for 70+ years, and I imagine 3D animation isn't taught very much, but if we give them the time to practice and get better, we'll have better integrated CGI, and perhaps even better looking full CGI anime.

It´s not about experience, it´s about equipment and people.
Why do you think Avatar did cost that much?
You can make 10000 people draw the same pictures over and over, with CGI you can´t.You need professionals that can create the necessary graphics and the equipment.
If you lack professionals you can hire artists pay them nothing and make them draw backrounds, that is not the case with CGI.

Guess what Ghost in the Shell made.

Like... drawing Giant Robots in 2D is not financially viable anymore. Gundam Reconquista took WAY too much money. Cross Ange brought them back bigger returns than Reconquista.
This is sadly true, but makes me wonder how the 90s Japan had a much bigger budget on anime than nowadays. I don't know exactly of japan's economic history but it has greatly improved since then, but I find it weird that modern anime have a reserved budget and rely on CGI most of the time.

That, or animators just grew lazy over time.

Animation is slave work, inform yourself before you spout bs like that.
Akira was made on a budget of 10 Million Dollars, something Will Smith get´s as a bonus for showing his naked ass in a Movie.

Japanese culture just deviates more and more from their Samurai driven feudalistic values towards a more liberal society, although that´s not necessairily for the best.

I dislike the animation style of CGI anime. However, I'm fine with it if the anime is executed well.

You must be an idiot to assume that we have the same POV about lazyness.
I´d rather kill myself than live for 1000 $ a month on a 10 hour schedule excluding overtime (which the Japanese do).

I personally hate it and avoid it, but if the anime has a really good story worth suffering through it for, then yeah I might watch it. But I normally just read the manga/light novel instead.
CGI has never been pleasant to look at for me, no matter how well done lololol.

I personally don't mind. It makes everything more consistent but at the same time, it sorta limits the amount of character creativity as every character can look the same as seen in Sidonia.

But, in my opinion, CGI anime can be very, very good. I'll be using a game for example: Guilty Gear XRD. The game looks AMAZING. It looks very, VERY close to 2D.

Personally, I'd love to see an anime use that same engine to animate their material.

Well actually Guilty Gear uses a lot of weird tricks to achieve that effect, and while I do think it's nice, regular anime don't have the budget or time to put that much love into their CG. They're getting better at it and learning more ways to be efficient with their use so CG is getting much better though.

Also, I disagree that CGI makes things look consistent. I think it's the opposite since most 2D have a lot of sameface characters.

I suspect that a lot of problems come from a(t least) few areas:

-Trying to keep too many 2d design sensibilities despite working with another dimension

-Not properly taking advantage of the benefits of 3d (camerawork for example). See some of the earlier episodes of the 2016 Berserk anime for this.

-Having directors who don't have prior experience with 3d anime

Etc.

Totally unwatchable. Instant drop. I won't watch any CG anime, even if plot would be good. It's just soulless and ugly. I hate 3DCG. 3DCG is running anime and movie industry in general.

Do you include Pixar movies amongst that soulless and ugly category that you refuse to watch?

Really?

I'm talking about normal movies, but yeah, I don't like Pixar's too. I don't mind classic Disney movies. Don't get me wrong, in terms of 3D animation Pixar is doing great work, but I just hate 3D animation if it is anything else than videogame.

Eh wow. I'm actually finding that hard to believe right now. Like, I've seen the amount of work it takes to make good 3D and I don't think it's right to call something that has so much work put into it being called soulless. That's like calling stop motion soulless to me. It doesn't make any sense.

I can't judge your sense of beauty but then again, if you look 2 posts up you'll see a youtube video I posted of the potential of 3D anime. If you think that's ugly then I don't know what to say.

I try to avoid it as much as I can because it does ruin the immersion of anime being 2D, which we all have grown to love over the years.
But I think it's ok when they use it for background buildings or small items/objects characters use. It also depends a lot if the CGI is good in general, which most are not.

Series with only CGI/heavily influenced by CGI which I consider good would probably be: Anime movies (a lot of them use CGI even though they draw/hide it with 2D animation/characters), Idol series, Ajin, Black Rock Shooter and Touken Ranbu (2017)
