Probably my favorite anime episode of all time. One of the most stacked episodes of all time with such artistic ambition it's insane. 11/10

This episode was insane. It might have been the best episode of anything I've seen ever.

I never write anything in this little review box, but this episode left behind something that I don't really understand. A new emotion I've never felt before. For a moment while watching, I though, incorrect or not, that watching this episode is the reason for living.

Animation was hot trash, but considering studio circumstances I guess that’s to be expected. This is like black clover first 30 episodes bad..

@Nycro put the OP song during a worst moment isn't really a bad thing tho. Using a happy, motivational, or something that isn't related to a sad music to contrast with the violence of the scene is something that has been done before in countless movies.
@DrkSeid69
Yeah I agree it’s a good idea but I don’t think the song fit very well you could tell what they were going for though. Still this episode was a 10/10

@DrkSeid69 That and I read somewhere that SpecialZ (the OP) was created for the curses, so its basically a villain song. Having it play over Yuji's despair and sorrow is like having the curses mocking and laughing at Yuji. Its a pretty ingenious choice imo.
@F9s
Didn’t know this that’s cool asf

MAPPA's poor employees practically doing magic in record time. Spectacular episode even though I couldn't follow half of what was happening during that Sukuna vs. Mahoraga fight.
Man, and to think this episode was unfinished...

Also Nanami pls, for the love of God, leave Shibuya 😢 Just look at what they've done to you. You are a freaking Batman villain now 😭

It was interesting, the cinematography and knowing more about the power of itadori was a positive point for the episode, now that the fight in the first part left me bored and then the narrator's boring talk, it gained a negative point, overall, ep well produced almost as if it were a film too

It's cool that everyone loved the episode, but I can't help but feel disappointed more people aren't upset with the fact that it could've been SO MUCH BETTER had MAPPA given their staff more time.

They did what they could but not even the greatest in the industry can completely cover up the fact that the episode had direction but was unpolished in many areas. This one felt like the animators' last stand.
This just made me appreciate the animators and staff more, with how great of a job they've done given the messed up schedule and whatnot.

Also can't help but wonder how the episode would've turned out had they been given an appropriate schedule just like you said. Sadly I feel like this is going to be happening a lot for the rest of the season xd

That has to be probably one of the most hardcore episode of a show i've watched in a while. Megumi's last words were probably the hardest lines this episodes besides the action, "I'll be dying first, give it your best." before Mahoraga cleared him was cold as shit.
The build up toMahoraga's appearance as well was fucking great, previously we aren't really given the big picture of what Megumi's curse technique are beside being able to summon shadows, store weapons in his shadows and his incomplete domain, so this build up that Megumi was pulling some funny shit and reading his monologue that was hyping that Megumi was actually summoning something massive, to then slowly learn it's probably the equivalent to him summoning a MOAB on himself was metal.

Sukuna Vs Mahoraga fight was fucking crazy, i've probably said this about a few of the fights this season but this fight is probably my favourite this season. I'll have to rewatch it a few times to fully appreciate it but off the top of my head, the choreography was spectacular, camera work was amazing, animation was really good to really fucking well done in scenes along with the visual effects. The OST also fucking slapped hard this fight, OST this season has been pretty fire but this fight felt like the icing on the cake.
Sukuna's Domain expansion looked and felt fucking terrifying, along with the narrator explaining how it was close to divinity and how fucked it was. Watching Sukuna for the first time go all out from the start to finish with his range of techniques and movement was interesting. And that was at 15 fingers as well, i'm fucking hyped as shit to know what a full 20 will unleash.
Mahoraga was metal as shit, the build up to how it worked and why it was deemed the final shadow and hadn't been subjugated before was great. Watching it face tank all of Sukuna's attacks and even stride through his Domain's guaranteed hit had me fucking stunned as i slowly realised the extent of what it was.

Megumi's Ten Shadow technique seems really really interesting mechanically, seems he has to tame each shadow and they get increasingly difficult with each tier, Mahoraga being the final one with no one being able to tame it. Megumi knows at this stage can't win against it but the technique allows him to summon Mahoraga as many times as possible, so as a literal last resort / dead mans switch / suicidal act he summons Mahoraga to eviscerate both himself and the opponent. Sukuna keeping Megumi alive and finding interest in him is also an interesting plot point that i'm hyped to learn more about.

all i can say is "idk"

the action/fighting didn't really "grab" me. i don't rate anime based on their animation style or animation quality. but that doesn't mean i don't notice some things or have opinions about it. and my opinion is that the animation this season has just been a bit odd - the animation "style" (the animation "quality" doesn't seem like anything special, but the "style" might be affecting my opinion here)

i also want to say i'm just not that interested in all this cursed energy, curses, curse users, cursed techniques, reversed curse techniques and whatever else stuff. all the specific "conditions" that certain things require and how these sorcerers and users are trying to figure out each other's techniques. how the narrator and characters discuss these things every episode. straight up, i know i forgot some of these details in the layoff between season 1 and season 2 (or maybe i never understood). but i just find myself not caring about these things. i feel like it's overly complicated and intricate. they spend too much time on that and not JUST the plot. maybe it's a directorial decision to stretch-out a couple additional episodes of "content".

like when shikigami kid is pulling out his 10th level shikigami that no one's ever subjugated and he's going on and on about subjugation and certain conditions that must be met and all these specifics, i'm just like "holy fucking shit. idk and idc what you're saying. just get on with it". i've felt ALL SEASON that there's been a lot more exposition and intricate explanations for stuff this season than in season 1, and i don't like it

i'm not a mega uber chainsaw man fanboy. not sure i'd even put it in my top 25 favorite anime. but what i would say, since it's a jjk contemporary (gore, shonen, very popular over the last several years, etc), is that i think csm does it better than jjk. the gore is better. the "mythology" of the devils, their contracts, their power scaling, fiends, etc than this overly complex curse stuff in jjk

oh well. this season is ok. i liked season 1 more. i'm going to finish season 2. but at this rate i just don't know if i'll be interested enough to watch a season 3. tbd, i guess. if gojo isn't in an episode than this show really takes a downturn

lastly, given how hyped all these jjk fans were for this arc, maybe part of the reason i'm underwhelmed right now is because of the expectations jjk fans created. it's definitely some type of psychological phenomenon that i've noticed with other tv shows and movies

Ngl I was just a passenger until towards the end when Itadori came back. That's so brutal for him to just see the absolute mess that Sukuna caused. Idk man. Definitely not my favorite episode but I can see why people would say it's the best so far. And ofc Nanami is alive like I said he would be.

Wth did I just watch. MAPPA just dropped one of its best episodes yet that would allow JJK to go in history. The visuals and effects were top tier, from the start of Sukuna’s fight till the end when Itadori is trying to grasp wth did Sukuna do while he was controlling his body. Actual peak.

Great episode but Malevolent Shrine kind of stole the episode for me. That said, playing Special Z at the end was a bad choice imo. Playing the scene in silence would have been more impactful.

@RioFS Agreed. No idea who validated this idea to just blast this music there, it ruins the scene so hard.

@DrkSeid69 Who cares what the lyrics are about and what the song represents? It doesn't fit with what's happening on the screen whatsoever and clashes with the emotions were supposed to feel for Itadori.

This is almost on the same tier as HxH (2011) blasting the go-happy preview song a millisecond after the end of episode 135.
@KneelBeforeMe I feel like this view is symptomatic of not being native Japanese speakers.

Hollywood does this all the time. You'll see hyper violent, depressing, or shocking scenes, paired with music that directly contradicts the tone in an ironic way.

A shootout where people are dying left & right? Insert cheery 80's pop song. See a character coming to grips with emotional trauma or depression? 90's pop punk ballad. How about a terrifying monster lurking in the house? Sweet & soft lullaby playing in the background.

None of this would stand out to native English speakers. But people reading translations of Japanese songs being played over a subbed episode... Pretty sure we'd be unable to grasp the irony.

What an epic battle and animation. And Sukuna's literally obsessed with Fushiguro at this point. Also I do understand Yuuji's frustration with those who died by Sukuna's hands, but Fushiguro might be dead if Sukuna weren't there...? Nanamin on the other hand is always full of swag

This episode was the most anticipated of the season, and one of the most important of the series, and thanks to MAPPA (ieagerness to make all the animes, and not establishing reasonable deadlines) , this episode is just messy. I just felt completely lost for more than half of the fight, it was just a complete confusion of lights and things blowing up, where the characters were always unnoticeable...

All that said, it's not something that surprises me anymore, after seeing what MAPPA as done to Vinland, AOT, Chainsaw Man... Great storys, all ruined for bad animation..

Lets not normalize this shitty, unfinished animation, JJK was only one of the most promissing anime ever because they showed the resolve to do everything right and not skimp on anything. The manga is great and we're at a climax, so ofcourse this episode's plot is freaking awesome! But i was honestly cringing out at times from the animation, looking like filler naruto on the last 100 epis. This is JJK. This wasn't suposed to be this. This wasn't suposed to be another average anime. So don't rate it as such.

The animation for each episode has just gotten better and better. I believe that the season has just gotten so much better production and animation wise as it has gone on. The domain expansion in this episode was amazing, combined with the perfect music and narrator to accompany it. Everything about this series has been beautiful and MAPPA really has gone all out with this production.
