hmm i think this creature is a male, it's Togashi's favorite habit to drew males with females appearance xD just look at Kurapika's appearance back then when i saw him for the first time i thought without any misgiving that he's a female
just googling about "Kurapika is a girl" and you'll find tons of pictures and topics about that, i even heard that the old studio wanted to make a surprise by showing that Kurapika is a female by the end of the Greed island arc xD
and this isn't the only character who Togashi drew him like that but there're many of them like this girl

oh, right it's a boy sorry
but we talk about Togashi here with his sick mind so to sum up pito is a male but i don't think there's a exact way to define that, crap

In the manga, Pito is confirmed male.

In Hunter x Hunter (2011), Pito is a female.

The original character was male, but someone probably said "Hey, this is pretty fucked up. Can we just change this guy to make a bit of sense?.."

Also @ Satan-Sana's picture, that's Killua's younger brother. Not sure if you knew or not. Just throwing that out there.

I know that Neferpitou really looks like a female, so much that Rammot confused the gender, but Yoshiro Togashi, HunterxHunter´s creator already said that Neferpitou is a Male, the proof is right righ here:

To me, Pitou is female. We won't know anyway as long as Togashi doesn't confirm it.

First of all, I registered just to confirm this. I don't know how to post pictures so just use the links.

Anime = Female Voice Actress

Ayumi Fujimura
Voice actress

http://t3.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRYVlv83lMGREkUrZx1-C6qRgj95rdYsVfkubSEsHEF-fO7RkyW

Manga = Male

http://static1.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20131110132346/hunterxhunter/images/thumb/3/38/Pitou.jpg/180px-Pitou.jpg

Also Neferpitou which came from the Egyptian god named Nefertem which is a Male.

And also I would like to mention that even at first glance I didn't think that Kurapika was a she. Hahaha....Too flat chested. But if you will look at Neferpitou's curves. Thats a coke bottle right there.

Seriously look at this picture clearly anime version is a she and the manga version is a he. Just by looking at the body shape and hairstyle. Anime version hairstyle is curly and manga version has this spiky drooped down hair. At least thats how I would describe it.

http://static4.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20130927171305/hunterxhunter/images/thumb/c/c7/Pitou%27s_differences.jpg/209px-Pitou%27s_differences.jpg

Therefore I conclude being more of an anime fan and someone that doesn't read the manga alot. That Neferpitou will always be a she to me. Unless they show that part where (he/she) is naked. If they put some sort of barrier on the chest part thats a female and male if not. Guess we'll have to wait for that episode. I don't know when that is though since they just released Neferpitou and Pouf's fight with Chairman Netero. Haha. Fingers crossed on female. Also I think she's female just cause of her face on the anime. Just watch it and you'll 100% say she's female.

I like how Crunchyroll just resorted to referring to Pitou in third person in the latest episode, and went with neither he or she.

Youpi also used to be called Yupi.

In episode 79, you see Meleoron with 4 fingers, then he has 3 in ep 102.

The consistency with this anime, just wonderful.

In the [Ant] species, there is a Queen (of course), and then there is the offspring of the Queen,
(worker ants) which consist of both male and female ants.
The female ants are all infertile, the only fertile female ants are [Queens].

So it's not unlikely that Neferpitou is a female, or that there are other female Chimera Ants.
I'm not sure where everyone got the information that all worker ants are male..

..But lets settle on Neferpitou being a female for the (2011) Anime, and an unknown for the Manga.

FROM HxH wiki:

The only concrete evidence we have to determine Neferpitou's gender appears in the official databook "Hunter × Hunter Character and Word Data Book." In it, Neferpitou is referred to using the pronoun "彼” (kare) which is usually translated to “he.”

When speaking, Neferpitou uses the pronoun “boku,” (translated to “I” in English) which is used by boys and young men, but it's also used by some less femenine sounding women.

Neferpitou is shown naked with a flat chest. Later in the manga, Neferpitou is described like a "mother" protecting a child.

In the cover of Volume 28 which is implied to be based off the coronation of Virgin Mary, Neferpitou takes the middle position which corresponds to Virgin Mary's.

From all this, it should be assumed that Neferpitou does not have a specific or “confirmed” gender. Because of this, this article uses non-gendered pronouns such as "they/they're."

In the manga, Neferpitou's chest is totally flat. In contrast, the 2011 anime may depict Neferpitou by giving it a prominent bust.

So, it is possible that Neferpitou's gender in the manga differs from the anime.

In the manga it's more unclear.

But obviously a girl in the anime version. The fact that MAL doesn't say that about her is annoying.

I classify Pitou as an 'it' when in conversation and such.

Though in the anime doesn't it refer to itself as 'Boku' a lot and unless my Japanese is rusty, 'Boku' is only used by they guys.

The arguments about this will never end, and as long as Pitou's gender never becomes relevant to the story, does it matter what people choose to call him/her?

Pitou is male. It explicitly states this in the official English manga translation (at least in my area, Canada).

Anyway, the real question is why Togashi seems to have some sort of bizarre fetish for males who appear female... *cough cough Illumi* *cough cough Kalluto* *cough cough Kurapika (In the beginning)*

Could this be the birth of...
Tranny-con?!!

I like this explanation the most. So let's go with that.
Togashi likes his traps, just look at Kurapika (especially back in the earlier chapters of the manga, the anime made him look a bit more masculine).

I think a reasonable explanation is that since Pitou is part insect, her entire body could very well be an exoskeleton and those come in many shapes and sizes.

Originally in the manga I believe Neferpitou is supposedly a male since chimera ants doesn't have any gender. However, in the anime its clear the directors intends it to be a female.

I believe pitou was intended to be a male as for manga we know why ,but in anime, they decided pitou to be female as the choice for voice actor (Ayumi Fujimura) being female suggests to that conclusion ,so it depends on YOUR perspective whether you go for manga or anime, because both are correct in their own way.

Fairly simple, The Chimera ant queen can not have female kids, this was a established fact at the start of the arc. In order for a new queen to be born the king has to mate.

Pitou is a child of the queen = he is a he.
