Sorry if someone already figured this out, but I couldn't really be bothered to read through 20 pages.
Just want to add for the people who didn't understand why Hei's powers returned:
The reason why Suo was never truly a contractor was because she absorbed Hei's powers into the meteor fragment she received from Shion. When Hei was set up into the trap which removed his powers, what happened was that Suo got caught up within the trap as well, and since meteor fragments enhance or change contractor powers, and Hei's powers effect molecular level, his powers simply made Suo a contractor. We can understand this from the scene where Suo suddenly spaces out (no highlightning on her eyes and eyes "focused" which is the trademark of all contractors showing their rationalizing and calculating emotionless persona) and she grabs Hei and suddenly jumps into the sea without really understanding why.
This also explains Suo's constantly irregular behavior as a contractor, as was heavily discussed in season 1. I am not 100% sure whether her obeisance was really about creating origami out of paper either, as there's nothing which implied she did it everytime she used her powers, and it is never brought up among the characters (naturally they would've discussed her obeisance, but they didn't do so, strangely enough). When Izanami destroys the fragment, Hei's powers also return to him.
Anyway, this also explains why Suo's weapon is created out of the meteor fragment rather than being created in the typical fashion of contractors. I found this part incredibly annoying and a serious waste of frames and unfortunately made it feel way too much like some kind of maho shojo (wtf, this is Darker than Black, it's supposed to be a drama/noir/action series for a much older public). Why couldn't they have solved this transformation in a much neater fashion?
Anyway, I primarily joined these forums to rant about how sorely disappointed I was over the series. Someone already posted that season 2 lacked everything which made season 1 great, which is primarily the noir feeling, and I totally agree.
I did not like the fact that they made Hei a side character. The reason why season 1 was enjoyable was thanks to Hei. Putting some moany brat in his stead just doesn't cut it. To make him look like some homeless alcoholic didn't make it better. Where was the Hei that was smart and witty (nevermind the fact that Hei looked a lot better in season 1...)? And having him being powerless throughout a majority of the series without even pondering the philosophical issues like the first one did just doesn't cut it either. They could've pulled some great drama moments with added character development there, but all these options were thrown into the lake, it seems.
The season was way too short and suffered from a plot that felt too compressed and rushed. The season also suffered all the issues season 1 did, and instead of trying to develop and flesh out the cause why contractors and dolls exist, as well as what the Gates are, they tossed all this into the lake as well. So basically every opportunity to make this season great were completely wasted in my eyes.
The lack of character development is also incredibly annoying. Even if Darker than Black is action-based, what made it so enjoyable was the fact that the characters got some hefty development and I'd rather put it into a drama category than the action category. The good action is just the cream on top. Of course this is again a fault of the season being too short.
Lastly there's the story which felt completely convoluted, stupid and unnecessary. I did not root for Suo as I rooted for Hei in the first season, and instead of being a complex mystery series filled with intrigue which made the first one so enjoyable, this one butchers everything that one can call a mystery and puts together something which at first looks like a mystery series, but without really being so. Where are the awesome hints and deep and complex plot?
On the plusside, the animation was superb and the few fighting sequences that were tossed in were all well coordinated. Unfortunately, as many brought up, they were few and because of Suo's rather, least to say, stupid contract ability, most of the fights were rendered completely uninteresting.
The season did grow a bit after they left Russia where it shortly returned to the noir feeling for a while with the sidestory of Norio, but because of the way it was handled, it felt completely useless.
As for people wondering who the boy Yin was, it is the new being born from the merge of Izanami and Izanagi. The light at the end when Hei touches Yin was very similar to the first season's ending as well, and I don't think Hei killed Yin per se, but changed her molecular level, probably rather freeing her from Izanami, which means, in a way, death for her. |
