I meant they are too stubborn.
They prefer Japanese over English or use whatever they want.

Well it may be a case, but one still doesn't conclude the other

What ever mate. And this suggestion would be like finding a needle in a haystack.
Unless a miracle will happen and this got implemented or approved.
And how many suggestions was been approved? It's very few right?
Anyway this suggestion was good. But this may got a little chance to be made.

I have never called it Spirited Away. I didn't even knew what the hell was supposed to be Spirit Away if it weren't for the picture.

Then I guess you're the first I met.

This is beside the point, but

The point is, users should be able to have the freedom in their own lists. For one, it'll heavily reduce bitching against DB naming (one would hope). It would also enable you and I to call the same movie by their different, but still official, names.

Well it was once officially planned to be implemented, but it seems the plans were changed and it's not in the priority or even considered any more

It's the problem in thinking that there are only people from the US here. Or in believing that the rest of the world should follow their weird translations (I still can't understand how Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi became Spirited Away).

The point is that the only common name to everyone in the database is the Japanese (and its transliteration), so it should be the default one, obviously. Yo can always search for the English one if you don't know the original.

prominent English synonym
wait, but you just said that it's subjective and you're against it. Who is going to decide that it's prominent enough? If he can decide it - how is it even different from being a most common title?
I meant licence-wise: this is an English language site based in America, and licencing companies are usually big corporations, so there's usually only one title for English speaking countries (Vize media, etc). Which might not be the most common one in some cases.

I think most old users are aware of this thread but as you can see even at that time, though it cleared a lot of gray points it wasn't conclusive in any way.

Default yes, but we are talking about most recognizable, which in some cases is not English even if there is an official translation (as was pointed out already on Hajime no Ippo example) or is a fan translation (regardless of official translation existing or not). That's why I liked the old style of naming MAL used more. Of course there are some cases when the most common/recognizable is not clear (especially for new shows), but it was still better than now. So maybe if it could be added back as an option at least, I would be happy.

What we need is a "Japanese/English/Common (aka how it was)" toggle that will affect naming on all pages of the site, not just list.

EratiK said:
Thinking some more, ideally the toggle could switch between synonyms for every entry but that would be a nightmare to program. But tagging the DB so it has an "original title" and a "prominent English synonym" definitely sounds doable.

Voting seems plausible, too. Then you can switch to a naming scheme somewhere in your options were you can choose: Japanese (transliteration), Japanese (hieroglyphs), Japanese + English (when official available), English (official when available or "prominent English synonym" decided by mods. You can argue new discussions will arise arguing which title is the most popular, but that is fine), mixed (based on voting)

That's a chore though

Doesn't MAL uses English titles now? (Webpage Titles)
It just can't be seen completely because of the small length of browser tabs.

It does, but this suggestion concerns list titles

What's the real point of this suggestion anyway?
I assumed they just wanted to just see English Anime Titles (which sometimes ridiculous.)
It's still better to have the official Romaji titles. So just be contented with English Titles that can be now searched.

No, I don't want to be impossibly confused every time I visit someone's list. Also MAL has a strict policy on not implementing this kind of thing, just stop trying already.

Yes, but to see it in the list. You can already see English title when you visit the anime page, so why would anyone be bitching about it?

No it's not, which is the whole point of this suggestion. What's the point in having titles in your own list that you scratch your head every time you see them?
