Not at all. Even though I don't mind shipping it's supposed to be about friendship and swimming. Fangirls only see what they want to see and try to make bromance = gay. None of these pairings will ever really happen.

Though to be fair kyoani really panders to the fangirls with ship teases. Did you see those underwater pairing official art? Especially the Rei/Nagisa, Rin/Haru, Makoto/Haru, and Makoto/Rin ones. That's as far as it will go. No one is actually gay for each other despite what the massive shipping fandom thinks. Even though I wouldn't mind, I'm not gonna delude myself.

Leave shipping in fandom because it's only about friendship and bromance in the show.

In my opinion I just don’t see them as gay honestly I have seen gaudy act like to each other that are straight a guy can be there for somewhere no matter what gender I just don’t judge the show by its cover or by the actions they do in the show along with the fact there is only one girl now that the series is continuing that is incorrect their are now 3 girls btw it shows no signs to me they are gay also people have said I’m gay cause I am best friends with this girl who is and it’s wrong to assume something like that but this is just a cartoon soooo that’s just how I feel on it I don’t like judging things but your opinion is your opinion love y’all bye(ps don’t reply to this if you have nothing nice to say) 🔕❤️💕🤭

Definitely gay, in the best traditions. About muscles, naked bodies, passions, friendship and male rivalry on the edge of sexual desire, girls completely aside.
Surely, Haru and Rin are romantically attracted. Rin for some time becomes close to Sosuke (after crying on his chest while Haru listening to them), but wise and mature Sosuke all the way understands that Haru is Rin's true love (or first love to which he is very loyal). Sosuke twice fights with Haru telling him to stay away from Rin and once sadly states that Rin is ready to go to great lengths for Haru (their trip to Australia), which fact Rin admits with no regrets.
In fact, Ren truly is ready to do anything for Haru, stating that this is because "he wants to swim together with him", he can open up to Haru only that much. Besides, he believes that Haru is with Makota. Even in this matter Rin tries to support Haru telling him that he fights with Sosuke too, that's no big deal and that it will be OK (after Haru feels bad having had a fight with Makota). To say nothing about his support at competitions. When Rin drags Haru to Australia, we find out that he told a lot about him to his host family - not only conveying his admiration but also picturing Haru's blue eyes that look like the ocean. Later, he admits to Sosuke that he would gladly do the same for Haru anytime (like that trip) and we see that it is easier for him to be sincere with Sosuke than with Haru. And also, that he doesn't take enough care about Sosuke's feelings. Rin tries to find out Haru's plans about his future 3 times until he makes a separate decision and goes away to Ausralia again. By that time he makes sure for himself that Haru and Makoto are together.
At the same time Haru's feelings are oblivious... that's Haru for you. Sure, he has some feelings for Rin and he is irritated that he can't say them out loud. When he shouts at Rin that he is no part of his future, I understand that he can't find guts to confess that he would like to have some common future with Rin - while Rin, as I have said, have tried to start that conversation 3 times (or more).
Being dragged all the way to Australia, Haru gets a shot of positive emotions, some confirmation that Rin cares for him, calms down and gets out of the gloomy shadows emotionally. Looks like it's enough for Haru, that's what he was wanting to make sure about - that Rin actually cares. It doesn't seem that Haru imagines going any further in his relationship with Rin.
However, Haru has Makoto by his side from their very young age and he values him greatly. At the very least, he is not upset when Makoto says (after inner struggle for some days) that he loves swimming and he loves Haru (it's in the movie, not in the TV show). Haru looks quite surprised in a good way, even enchanted. Before that we see Makoto lying depressed love sick in his room.
Haru, being a quiet type, at least accepts Makoto's feelings, As much as Makoto is always ready to lift Haru up from the water after a race, Haru is ready take this hand and rely on it (except he twice twitches Makoto into the water for fun). Their constant being around each other (mostly by Makoto's initiative) is nothing like the one of Ikuay and his stalking friend.
After Haru overhears a passionate conversation with crying between Rin and Sosuke, he obviously grows further from Rin and when he starts to live in Tokyo, we can notice how his glance sometimes lingers dreamily on Makoto's face.
However, Rin and Haru start to open up towards each other. Looking from aside (which is the most informative look usually) one could suppose that they are a couple (going to Australia together, showing up at their schools' nationals together having come in Rin's van, sitting there at the event side by side). Who knows where it is heading for. At the same time Rin becomes more distant from Soseko establishing with him a less passionate relationship.
The last scene of the show is three boys in the ocean, a love triangle, bonded with swimming and unspoken feelings.
Maybe, Rin becomes for Haru what Sosuke has become for Rin: a friend in love who understands you better than you yourself.
It resembles a classic plot of English literature 19-20 cen like "Brideshead revisited" or "Sons and lovers" carrying the idea that a man's first love must be a man.

no. free isn’t gay. just because the main characters are boys that are really close friends and swim doesn’t mean it’s gay. i mean, if you think about it, maybe the characters are homosexual. maybe not. but you shouldn’t judge a book by its cover. it’s just a sports anime with beautiful design and a great storyline.

If free is gay for having fan service catered to girls (which is super rare btw) then every ecchi anime were the girls are basically naked and have girls touching eachothers breasts is yuri by that logic. This thread was really unnecessary. Imagine having one anime for fanservice for straight girls and gay guys and people have to ruin it. Amazing.
