This epilogue is essentially the writer standing up and saying, "This is what I have to say!"
Turns out all he had to say was meaningless, nonsensical drivel. Absolutely nothing Shiki had to say made any sense, and was easily contradicted instantly. Even knowing the steel-manned version they were going for (a combination of id-ego-superego, what exists in the vacuum of space + what if that vacuum could perceive itself, and what is a body without a mind) her monologue is still riddled with so many holes that it better belongs on a sandwich.
3/10. At least you tried something interesting.
EDIT: Le sigh. Reading some other posts, I already can't stand this shit. So I guess I'll break down super briefly why this is stupid. First off this entire concept relies on the mind, soul, and body being separate and distinct things, yet it also acknowledges that the brain and body fundamentally influence each other. So the show creates a fourth category of default space-time [Void] to stand-in as the fundamental basis for all humanity. We listen to a "blank slate" that was "forcibly imprinted" with two personalities talk for 30 minutes about how she thinks (even though she doesn't have a brain) and her instincts (even though she doesn't have a brain stem).
We spend forever dancing around the idea but never acknowledging the soul could be consciousness itself, something many theorize to connect to multiple individuals.
Void Shiki claims that the other Shikis don't actually want violence. It's Void wanting violence to return all things to the void. Instead she's insisting that a baby can be born without a personality (or being generous at least one not influenced by the physical body's senses, DNA, or brain or the brain's responses to its environment filtered through epigenetics. It's essentially the Kingdom Hearts idea of the Person, the Heartless, and the Nobody.
Instead of being an avatar for the universe, Void Shiki is the origin of all things herself, which is impossibly preposterous. How can a being born not only be not born but not exist? And so Void Shiki is literally a deity able to perform miracles, so naturally Kokuto says, "Nah G, I'd rather stay blind." Instead of asking for Dat Ass after watching it in tight kimonos through 5 years of bullshit. Because remember, each person has their own individual ORIGIN somehow, in addition to everyone sharing an origin in the Akashic Records.
So naturally Shiki is drawn to Kokuto for being normal, because average people lead worthless lives no one notices, but living is also the hardest thing. So Void Shiki and both Shikis love Kakuto for being a healthy neurotypical mate candidate, but they also think he's an utter Neanderthal incapableof higher thought or reasoning. Everyone knows that contradiction turns pussies into waterfalls.
And it basically just goes on and on like that needlessly ignoring basic truths and third-grade level refutations. So people who got lost in the first ten seconds think it's brilliant, and everyone else is waiting to take Void Shiki up on her offer to exit Stage Left. |
