I feel like this could’ve been a good anime; it had all the elements to be great but it just… wasn’t.

The characters were so flat that I didn’t care about them and the plot was so rushed.

It felt like such a weird choice for the Tuatha De family to adopt Dia when it’s clear that she and Lugh are in love with each other. That’s going to cause some questions about that cover story later on for the family!

And just like that, what could've easily been the best fight in the show has gone straight out the window. Seriously, there's a million ways they could've made that fight amazing. Maybe the guy survived the nuke. Maybe he realized what the mc was doing. Maybe he could move faster than the nuke drop. Maybe the aim was off. Maybe the mc messed up the spell. Anything that would force the mc to think on the fly and adapt to his failure for once. But nope, all according to keikaku.

This show knows how to turn every interesting plot point into a way to jerk off the mc's awesomeness. In a way, it's pretty impressive.
Back when I worked at a company that made networked simulators for the DoD, we took some of our technology and made a multiplayer tank sim game. We tried to make it as similar as we could to the real sims, without compromising any classified information. The game got to alpha testing, and the feedback was crushing. The play-testers hated it. Their primary complaint was that you'd be driving along in your tank, when suddenly *BOOM* you were dead. No warning, didn't know what hit you, no chance to do anything about it. Just instant Game Over.

Apparently our damage model was a bit too realistic, and not giving players a chance to retaliate against attacks was extremely frustrating. We had to dumb it down with a hit point-based damage model, where several hits would degrade your capability, before finally killing you.

I completely understand that for storytelling purposes, you want a long drawn-out battle, with both the good and bad guy giving lengthy exposition about their actions, motivations, and their moves. Lots of back and forth strikes to build up tension and anticipation, culminating in a climactic move to end the fight. Perhaps with the loser lingering on for a bit to say his last words as a denouement.

But what we saw in episode 12 was probably the most realistic modern fight I've seen in an anime. Boom and it's over, with not even enough pieces left to indicate a person was disintegrated. This is the struggle that all combat entertainment has to deal with. Either it can be entertaining but unrealistic. Or realistic but unsatisfying.

Lugh with a tactical nuke 10/10 assassination
Technically, that wasn't anywhere close to a nuke. From the explanation of how Lugh's kinetic projectile worked, he just raised it up into space using gravity-canceling magic, then let it drop without air resistance. If you figure he raised it up 100 km high and that the gravity on this world is similar to Earth's, then the resulting impact velocity is about 1.4 km/s. If he used magic to double the gravity as it fell, then it'd be about 2 km/s. (This is ignoring the slight decrease in gravity at that height.)

A real Rod from God gets most of its energy from its orbital velocity - about 10 km/s. That's the speed it needs to be traveling relative to the surface in order to maintain orbit (oppose the force of gravity pulling it down). Basically the energy expended by the rocket putting it into orbit is being stored, and is released when it hits the atmosphere and ground.

Tungsten has a density of 19.2 kg/liter, versus about 1 kg/liter for a human body. So the human-sized tungsten rod he pulled out should've weighed about about 2 tons.

At 1.4 km/s, that's a kinetic energy of 1.8 Gigajoules, or a bit more than 400 kg of TNT. About the size of a medium conventional bomb (1000 lbs).
At 2 km/s, that's a kinetic energy of a bit more than 850 kg of TNT. A large conventional bomb or shell from a battleship.
At 11 km/s (impact from orbital velocity), that's a kinetic energy of 26 tons of TNT. Putting it around the yield of a tactical nuke.

For reference, the Hiroshima bomb was equivalent to about 15,000 tons of TNT.
A 155 mm howitzer shell contains about 7 kg of TNT

At 30 km/s (the speed at which the Earth orbits the sun), the kinetic energy is equivalent to 195 tons of TNT. Meteor strikes would be up in this range, although their mass would probably be a lot higher. Yeah, the trope you see in movies and anime about a mage casting meteor storm and the bad guys watching as their death slowly approaches, isn't how it works. Unless it's traveling obliquely to the Earth's atmosphere like the Chelyabinsk meteor, it'll reach from outer space to the surface in just a few seconds.

I'm bit curious about something all the way in the beginning of the show. What was the D rank skill that Lugh took that he was so suprised that the gods must have overlooked it?
My bet is it's a photographic (eidetic) memory. It can't be too fantastic because it's only D-ranked. But it has to be unusual enough that Lugh was surprised that it was only D-ranked. And during the show we see him perfectly recalling absolutely trivial bits of information like the density and atomic number of gold.

@Solandri

You're comparing a game development to a storytelling, 2 completely different concepts.

I don't want realism in anime, especially one that's set in a world where god and magic exist like this.  It's anime, storytelling is always the priority, not realism.

I don't want long, drawn-out, exposition heavy fight either. In fact, my biggest issue with most anime fight is how they tend to either last too long or explain too much, or both.

What I want is for something, ANYTHING, to not go according to plan for once. Since you brought up video game, what do you think is the most intense moment to watch in challenge runs or speedruns? It's when things go wrong and the runner has to adapt on the fly. No, that doesn't mean abandoning the run and spending the next 10 minutes trying to damage control. It just means that they have to react to what's happening on-screen and go for plan B C D F and so on.

That's what I want, the "darn it my plan A failed, anyway here's my follow up" moment. I'm not even asking for some crazy back and forth Death Note-style of mind game. Just a simple "wait, that's not what I wanted to happen" would suffice. Not only would it give more intensity to the fight, it also would make the MC even more badass in comparison to what we get. Instead of just some mary sue who can read everyone and everything with 100% accuracy, he would become the 200 IQ guy who plans ahead and is ready to adapt to every possible outcome of the event.

If you haven't seen it already, No Game No Life pulled this off perfectly. It's not about everything going as planned, it's about HOW you make everything going as planned.

No one wants to watch, or to play for that matter, a game in which everything is predictable and everything plays out the same every single time. It's why RNG exists (and no, I don't mean the obvious bad game design like what you described)

Lets be honest, we all know that hero will prolly be a girl in disguise and will most likely be seduced by Lugh as well.
Based from the second episode we know that his alternative end goal was to prevent the hero from rampaging after she defeat the demon lord so it all checks out.
So his true win condition is to seduce the hero and make her sub-servant like Tarte and Maha.

Also, dont think a cannon and a kinetic based space super weapon counts as assassination tools

For how much the goddess seems to hate her job she puts quite a lot of passion into her little skits

We all know that was not the hero because she wasnt a cute girl, and would you look at that the hero is an adorable tomboy alright.

We got the kiss!
Sadly no marriage though.. imouto route achieved ..

This was both lamer and more solid than I expected at the same time. 7/10

The goddess seems kinda... stupid. Some of these reincarnations were just stupid. Why did she reincarnate a modern soldier in a world without guns? What logic made her think that the world's best rapper would somehow be a suitable candidate? Why was an assassin her last choice for her assassination job?

Now that's some United States of Smash spirit right there.

10/10 would watch the hero turn to paste against glorious rods from kami-sama.

I mean you all saw the smirk that Goddess gave right? She knew.

She def knew what a freedom stick from orbit looked like.

Lol, what did i watch. No action and he just throw that nuclear to the outer space for one hit. Also hero in his kingdon territory? Daheck. That's why the goddess smirk, she's really sus. Feel rushed episode and it didn't make sense half of seaoson. Need season 2 for real.

I had a feeling it was rods from God when he created that big piece of tungsten but didn't realize he would actually deploy it. Gae Bolg vs Gungnir, two legendary/mythical spears against each other. I guess the Norse wins this time over the Irish.

...and our closing episode's villain is not actually the Hero anyway. sigh

7/10 I actually liked it somehow.
You see there's no need to wonder where your god is,
Coz he's right here! ...and he's fresh out of mercy.

Started off interesting then nothing really happened and then towards the end he's suddenly in love with his COUSIN while he goes to save her cause apparently there was a rebellion in her country in which that ended with a big ugly cgi battle and a quick death.

We just gonna ignore all the fan service of the emphasized fact they all 13 year olds and two of em were hand picked to be used as tools cause they had high mana?

As if this show couldn't get ANY worse, the hero (not actually the hero lol) had to be the most bland, most boring, most unlikeable character imaginable. It has to be a talent to write this bad of a story, surely? I can't comprehend how these manga sell. Are manga editors clueless when it comes to the generic shows? I know for a FACT there has to be better stories that just aren't being told. Is it nepotism? Blackmail? Someone make it make sense.

I liked this anime more at the beginning up until mabe episode 6 when I would give it an 8/10 but now it kinda devolved to the fine category of 6/10. The last episode, as someone has already pointed out, felt rushed.

Rush part: The problem is the main villain came out of nowhere and was just bland. We never encountered people who could oppose Luig so it felt kind of out of place to just introduce and kill one of those people. The plan of killing him really did not have any foreshadowing and was just quickly explained after the fact, not counting the as there was the time counting stuff I felt no tension whatsoever. And the aftermath was just quickly brushed of and the real hero could have at least have a scene or brief dialogue; not just face showing.

All in all, above average isekai, but definitely not comparable to better ones such as Re:zero, Mushoku tensei, youjo senki, Grimgar, Bookworm, Konosuba....
@BromWalar

Last episode felt rushed because Japanese anime writers/directors have a hard-on for wasting their limited 12 episode run with stupid sauna and "just chill" episodes that don't fit.

This anime did the same with that pointless hanging around just an episode before.

I've said this before so many times, 12 episodes are NOT enough to flesh out a world and characters, especially when you have Japanese writers in charge who can't help themselves but put stupid pointless sauna/beach episodes to waste time. Make it 24 episode season at-least if you're going to add fillers, else don't do it in 12 episode run.

The last episode was fine, but re-watching this, I lowered my rating for this anime from initial 9/10 to 7/10.

Judging by that conspicuous sinkhole left in the crater where the magic nuke landed, Setanta might've survived that.

The premise is interesting, but sadly can't say I found this particularly well written. Show tries to build up things from the very beginning, but the problem is most of the time the things Lugh need to do to become a assassin are nothing exciting to watch and they try to portray him as a character who doesn't want to live his life as a tool anymore, but he's still as interesting as watching paint dry. This last arc, with the whole saving dia felt extremely rushed and thus I couldn't care less about the conflict. Doesn't help that Dia herself is extremely bland like most of the characters. World building is nothing special either. Still will probably watch the second season if it comes out, hopefully the arrival of the real hero will lead to something more interesting than this whole tampering. Goddes best girl btw.

I got to say... The instant he summoned the Tungsten Rod, I knew what he was going to do.
I always wanted to see a series do something like that by combining magic and science to create utterly devastating spells. I actually even wrote in some personal notes how I would imagine the skill sets to work. There's so much creativity you can do with just some basic generic spells like alchemy, levitation, and more. I just never expected a series to really pull a "Rods from God" on us. I always thought it was a bit too nerdy of a thing for most people to think about. And besides that, I would consider it a ultimate ability of sort tied with some other theoretically plausible spells.
Definitely pleasantly surprised by this anime.

But seriously, if Setanta wasn't the hero, and he survived a 'Rod from God', wtf is the hero then?! Rods from God IRL had comparable energy as a very small tactical nuclear device. Think Davy Crockett small. I guess you have to use a strategic nuclear weapon then? Maybe even one step above... Mass annihilation?!

Or do the sneaky way. They all follow basic biology. Radiation since we are already on this line of thinking. Unlike poison or something else, there's really nothing you can do against high dose of radiation. Like imagine just creating Polonium-210 in the dude's bedroom. Dude be vomiting and skin falling off not too long and no one would know what happened. Considering he can just unsummon it, one doesn't have to worry about long term disposal.

A bit of a meh ending, the foreshadowed "hero" turned out to just be a really angry off knight tweaking off his roids which everyone seemed to have gotten wrong which is also pretty wild too me. Lugh throwing a magic Tungsten spear he was training for in the Bahamas was kinda cool as well.
End of the day, Lugh kills an honorary knight, save's the princess, gets the princess as his legal little sister and probably gets to confess his love and marry her getting a happy ending. Until the Goddess or someone tells him he killed the wrong guy lol.

Overall the show was OK, i thought the concept and idea was really interesting just maybe the execution wasn't the most appealing or hooking. The show had it's moments, but i felt like i personally didn't feel as hooked on the plot or characters later down since not much seemed to be 'moving' right until the last few episodes.
Honestly i thought we were getting like "Isekai Hitman 47 anime" and see some of the most diabolical and insane assassinations stunts with the added depth to story and character, at the end it wasn't entirely what i envisioned but i didn't completely hate it i guess, like the prologue was such a cool introduction to what felt like we didn't get to see a lot of later on.

Story was pretty straight forward in it's plot. The early episode's i think were fine, watching the MC train, applying his knowledge and skills from his previous life to gain advantages in his new life was cool, and the possibilities and ideas they hinted at with the Hitman being an MC was my main excitement.

I think some of my issues was how much time was spent on the merchant arc and i guess maybe some of the pacing and the ending. I understand the value of the merchant arc and what it brings to the story and characters, but man, for a show focused on a "hitman" theme MC the last thing i'd actually expect him to be doing is business management, on top of that, a good 80% of it i want to say was taken up with Maha's character story but that isn't to say the 20% of Lugh actually doing merchant role play wasn't interesting.
Speaking of Maha i still really struggle to see a lot of her value towards the show, her backstory was kinda there for the merchant arc and wasn't even the main aim of the arc and more of a side quest, and her character after it i just thought wasn't the most interesting i eventually chalked her down as just another member of MC harem at later stages.

They also i felt like left a lot of unanswered questions, namely the Goddess, no real goals besides the "kill hero", no "who, what, why, how's" towards her and almost completely shrouded in mystery for future seasons.

And to end it all off again, i thought we'd get a bit more action all i all, probably my mistake, but yeah again when i read hitman isekai i think of the merge of Hitman 47 / John Wick style idea's now with magic thrown in the mix with fuck tons of thriller action.

Characters were also ok. I'll give points for them presenting the idea of the MC facing a change of heart from his previous life and wanting to act on it, and honestly i'm surprised they managed to include that plot point as many points as they did in the show. The MC also was somewhat likeable so i'm also thankful for that at least.
Side characters were a bit rough, Maha as i already mentioned before, but Tarte and Dia were at most interesting with Dia a bit more then Tarte personally cus i liked her more. They had their basic plot points and structure but idk they didn't really feel unique or very rememberable to me.

The animation was meh, i didn't really vibe with it. I thought it was kinda consistent but the overall style or quality i didn't really enjoy.

OST wasn't the most exhilarating and the opening and ending were ok as well i guess.

Honestly the biggest shocker for me was realising that this show was written by the same author as "Redo of Healer", i've honestly yet to fully digest this information nor know what to do with besides pass it down to others in hopes i can find an answer later.

Bunch of things lined up perfectly that's why that attack worked but it could be summed up into to two

First, spear guy, for some reason, didn't move an inch lol. He stayed in one spot during the whole thing. Second, Lugh has been wearing that Kirito jacket thing for a few episodes now so he's probably absorbed some of this gary stu powers or something lol

Overall an entertaining series, got some cringe moment though particularly when it comes to romance or ecchi shit but that's just probably me getting older
