Positives:

- YLIA is a nice introduction for drama anime for new anime fans, and also a nice drama anime for kids overall. And its obviously made for kids, especially in their early teens, with the themes they show us, mainly since its set in a middle school.

-Kosei (male MC) has great character development in this anime.

-I did like Tsubaki's (softball girl) romance journey in this anime.  I really wanted her to end with Kosei

- The constant comedy scenes never really bothered me like it bothered many people. The poetic talking also never bothered me since it brought something different to the anime, even if no one speaks like that, specially early-teens people.

- A1-Pictures did a great job in this anime, with the graphics, animation, background music. A-1 Pictures brought their A-Game.

Negatives:

- As an anime overall, I just felt that the anime was a little too long for its own good. Its 22 episodes, and I feel like they could have cut it down to about 17 episodes.  Many times I just felt empty watching this anime and didnt really care too much.

- What bothered me about the anime is that I could never get immersed in the story like the people who loved this anime did, and because of this, I do wish the anime was shorter.  I think the reason why I could never get immersed is because I'm not really a new viewer when it comes to drama anime, and I can tell when something is meh or made for kids or beginners.

But overall, its a nice anime, I can see why its rated very high here on MAL, but its also a bit on the overrated side.

cant remember if this was the anime i spoiled for myself like 800 years ago or if this anime was just so predictable that i knew kaori was gonna die as soon as she passed out after her and arima's performance. nothing wrong with a predictable anime though, makes me feel smarter when i correctly guess whats gonna happen.

so hard to overlook tsubaki and kaori beating up arima. every time tsubaki yelled at or beat up arima i had to resist the tempting urge to drop this anime. guess u gotta chalk it up to kids being morons ig. for the most part, tsubaki was insufferable though. i was floating between giving this a 3 or giving it a 7, but i told myself i'd give it an 8 if kaori died since i need a sad anime ending every once in a while yknow. i'll probably drop this to a 7 at some point.

i was more upset about the kitty cat getting hit by a car and dying :(

I can agree with you.
For 22 episodes, I think she could play more with Kosei.

And you're right, not everyone are into drama anime.
Totally comprehensible. I think its a question of feeling. Personal experiences do count as well.

I had to rewatch this because it's April and I'm 14 years old like every other characters in the anime.
BTW that was the cruelest lie in history which was spoken by Miyazono Kaori

Great anime, I liked it overall, the story was decent. I just had problems with the pacing, It just felt all over the place at times. I feel like they've failed to fit and show the whole story of the anime in 22 episodes.

Can't say It made me cry though, I mainly think It's because we already pretty much knew the ending midway through the anime, so it was just... to be expected?

Recently rewatched Shigatsu. Can't say it had as much impact on me now as it did the first time I watched. Part of it is I'm not in the same headspace where I gladly take emotional roller coasters in stride. I still absolutely love melodrama, romantic drama, miscommunication issues, the usual stuff when it comes to romance series or shows where romance is a decent portion of the content. But the other part of it is the use of some characters.

Having forgotten some of the details,I realized on the rewatch that Watari needed more exploration and more character development. As much as Kaori served as just a vehicle to move Kousei towards the piano in the early episodes, Watari stayed being a vehicle to push Kousei in the right direction. We know next to nothing about the guy, only that he has an emotionally intelligent side that is often overshadowed by stereotypical "horndog" tendencies without any of the sexual harassment or objectification. As someone else put it, Watari was very much "young teenage boy" with how often he expresses his interest in the opposite sex. And honestly this would have been fine if his fellow peers in the show weren't way too insightful and eloquent in explaining their emotions (but not to each other of course).

Now onto less objective gripes, Shigatsu just didn't really do much with the characters I loved. Emi's character arc started and ended within 2 episodes after the Maihou Competition. And she does nothing else of import after that. There was a cute moment where she was trying to be sneaky in watching Kousei play accompaniment in the Gala concert with Kaori. And another cute moment where she and Takeshi share sandwiches with Kousei before the final competition. Everything else, she just served to be another commentator on Kousei's playing. They didn't even make good with the implication Takeshi threw out when the three are together backstage of the Maihou Competition. Like I believed that her interest in Kousei was purely admiration for his playstyle back when he was a kid. I truly did. Until she got unreasonably embarrassed when Ochiai her instructor talks to her while Emi is in disguise.

Nagi's character on the other hand, felt much more complete and well used but this is just entirely personal but I wanted more from her. I wanted more exploration of her family life with her brother. I wanted more goofy scenes like at the end where she doesn't know if she just wants to play piano like Kousei does or wants something more romantic than that with him.

Can't believe for once, my initial rating for Shigatsu matches what I currently would rate it years later. It's still a good show that has good messages with some questionable events to get through, namely with Kaori's forceful approach with Kousei in the first half of the show. She surely knows he has trauma that he's dealing with and pushes him into piano regardless without a care. There's also the fact that Seto did not stop Saki from hitting Kousei with the cane after the first hit. Like damn, you regret pushing Kousei towards the piano but you don't regret stopping the physical abuse of a small child right in front of you? Still, these examples don't detract enough from the show to rate it any lower. Yet another show where I wish I could watch it blind again.

Ending felt so plain but sad. I knew this was coming (I got spoiled by my friend) and I didn't cry. Even though it felt sad, I think that my tears dried when I cried during episode 21. But great story that touched my heart. I want to thank the people who worked on this anime, mangaka for the best 22 episodes of anime that I watched.

The entire field of emotions (more specifically sadness) the writer intended was executed perfectly with Kaori's letter while complemented with tear-jerking music and numerous images that brought back nostalgic, happy memories from earlier episodes. All of these features couldn't have been portrayed better.

Sad ending, but there were too many signs that Kaori would at some point leave him forever. The "goodbye" at the end of his performance already showed it was over, before we see the scene with her parents on the cemetery.

I do like how the series shows the importance of connections, and that even when sad things happen, these connections can help to go on. Hopefully the letter that Kaori wrote for Kousei, will help him see the people who care about him, now that she, who started his revival, has gone.

Your Lie in april was the best anime I have ever watched. It changed my prospective about anime. I used to watch anime with mystery genre and cute anime girls and I thought this was one of them, but after watching, it left me with tears. I started watching it at 11pm night and literally watched all 22 episodes nonstop with repeating the last 2 episodes. At 8 am morning my eyes were filled with tears 😭. It really touched my heart. Now after 5 days, my mind still think about this and I feel sad deep inside.

Great ending really brings the whole story together. Title finally makes sense now, which makes it even sadder. Kousei never truely says what he feels, but it never mattered as both gave each other the will to live.
