I don't know if it's because of the source material or not, but they just completely gave up on animating that adventure arc. Was kinda looking forward to it too.

Honestly, even though I know this could be ten times better if whoever was in charge of the project bothered to find a proper studio to animate it.

The story is both compelling and captivating, so I'm looking forward to the next season.

@GRANDXR86 True, I've seen some truly terrible isekai, but this set a new bar for low quality in both story and animation

I hoped that the animation would improve with each episode, but unfortunately, it didn't. I felt dizzy with every frame due to the rapid transitions, which moved faster than I could appreciate the details in the still images. The story wasn't exciting enough to evoke strong emotions. However, because the storyline contained a mystery that piqued my curiosity, I continued to watch everything.

@deijiplays I mean, the animation kinda improved, but it never got above a 3/10, generously.

Final verdict: Story: 7 to 7+

Animation 1 to 3-. (Actually, more like 1 to 2-.)

As I am generally not so considered with animation quality (I am fine with visual novels,) sure, it's nice, but I'd much rather trade it for a nicer story, I think 6/10 sticks. Possibly 6.5, unsure. I'm still keeping the score I gave at 10/10 to counter the 1/10 ratings.

As someone who reads the manhwa, ofc I have extensive notes on the adaptation. Just like most of us. That being said, I actually enjoyed the final episode. Last couple, tbh. I'm interested if they learn anything from the backlash and improve on the S2, because I can let the intro arcs slide, but the story is just going to get more interesting from now on and they can't afford to botch it going forward.

I get that the anime format needs some cuts here and there, but I just don't like that they forgo scenes that make the readers/viewers more engaged. Yeah, they leave the importand bits in there, but that isn't enough imo. Aaaand the combat is also very under represented. I mean, just flailing swords around with vfx doesn't do this work justice. Where combat tactics actually do have their place and are greatly described (at least in the manhwa, didn't read LN).

Decent show. Not alot of cliches alot of shows keep using. Considering I didnt get annoyed with this and drop it like the last few shows, it was decent. I'd enjoy watching the next season.

Most I've seen Jasmine talk. Cute but for a season finale it did feel off beat as Arthur only became an adventurer and it became a year later in the blink of an eye. I'm enjoying this sentimental anime though.

Didn't read the manga so I went into this with low expectations due to the rating and was pleasantly surprised. Apart from abysmal battle animation, I found it very interesting to watch. The story and adventure really capture my interest. Looking forward to next season.

As someone whos blind to animation quality and doesnt know the source it kept me hooked enough to binge ep 1-12 in a day and was quite enjoyable, looking forward to s2. I rly like more mature mc´s in my isekais and this one here definetly fills the spot.

This was fine, 6/10 from me.

That said, the ending scene with him "grown up" 2 years later, looking like a female character (for a second looking like the girl he's traveling with), doesn't raise my hope of second season not being shit. We'll see.

I'm used to seeing light novels getting garbage adaptations by butchering the source materials or by cramming several volumes into a 12 episode season. But the tBAtE adaptation is a first for me. The source was almost faithfully adapted and they only adapted a single volume into 12 episodes. But the animation quality was so bad that it ended up being worse than many other terrible LN adaptations. The only good thing that came out of this anime is that it served as an advertisement to people like me who haven't heard of the tBAtE novels before.

After watching the anime, I got curious and checked out the novels. It initially felt like a cheap Mushoku Tensei copy and later, your typical isekai power fantasy in the next few volumes. But everything changed when the "War" started. The novel took an entire different direction and there was this constant tension while reading each chapter. The enemies were just too ruthless and overpowered while the MC and his allies were getting their asses handed to them every single battle. At some point around volumes 5-7, the situation was so horrible that I was hoping for the return of the good old isekai power fantasy cuz the losses were too much to bear.

As of now, the entire novel series is completed and there are a total of 529 Chapters (12 volumes). I genuinely started to enjoy reading the novel after the "turning point" in volume 7 (Chapter 253). I had a lot of fun reading the 2nd half of the story, where Arthur becomes an adult and starts acting more like King Grey instead of an immature shounen protagonists who gets thrashed around by his enemies.

Not to mention, Regis > Sylvie and Caera >> Tessia

I didn't like how the author kinda ignored Caera to focus on Tess towards the end, but the ending was pretty decent. Though it would've been even better if he added more chapters towards the end. Or an Afterstory like how the Arifureta author expanded on his work.

Overall, even though the beginning and ending of the "tBAtE" novel had its issues, the entire journey itself was super fun and totally worth it imo. I ended up writing a review of the novel cuz there ain't much to say about "Terrible Animations, the Anime" lol.

@AngelofFrost I advise you to read better stories, because defending such a poorly written story makes no sense. You even defended the ending by calling it "decent," when the correct definition is "a horrendous and unimaginative ending, which even copies the mid-season plot twist of Gurren Laggan. The author constructed the story by stealing from people who actually know how to write, and the fans defend it anyway."

For real tho, I see where you're coming from. The ending could've been a lot better and the author "took inspiration" from a lot of other works. Some might straight up say he copied from other works but let's be real, it's 2025 and at this point we have thousands of fictional novels with similar plots. And it's easy to criticize some of the most popular ones.

Just to be clear, I ain't some tBAtE fanboy or anything and I've no idea about the author or his other works. I just finished watching the anime early last month and decided to check out the novels. And as I've mention in my previous comment, I found some parts of the novel (like the Alacrya Arc from volumes 8-10) to be quite enjoyable.

@AngelofFrost I disagree that in 2025, one can't be original, as a writer's job is precisely to imagine stories and show them to others. If an author imagines his own story, it will never be that similar to the story written by another author (maybe in two or three hundred years it will be truly impossible to be original, but for now it's possible without any problems). If the story is so similar (in the sense that the similarities are many and very evident, because some small similarities can happen by coincidence and that's okay), it's because the author isn't writing based on his own idea but on someone else's, which seems similar to the concept of "taking inspiration," but that's not how a writer works. This doesn't mean that tbate is the only series that copies from others, unfortunately certain genres are full of authors who don't write original stories but copy from others, but this does nothing but damage the genre in question (for example, after so many poor isekai were published, people defined the genre as "shit") so this thing should not be considered normal or supported, because it ruins the industry.

@scout_joe I was wondering what you'd seen to consider this garbage "the best isekai of the year," but as soon as I opened your profile I saw that out of 709 anime you've completed and 34 you're watching, you've given a "10" rating to 712 anime, basically giving "10" ratings even to series you haven't even finished, so either you totally lack the ability to criticize or it's an account created to boost ratings, I hope for you it's the first option because at least you can have fun and get excited with little.

Even though I haven't read the Manhwa, I could see that they skipped a few things...it was a rushed. Animation wasn't that good as well😕. BUT what I will say is that the story is extremely good. Been hooked since Episode 1💯. Love the relationships that Arthur as built, the world-building and power-system as well. If season 2 is official, and begins production (hopefully with better animation or just a different studio), I'll have to read the Manhwa to see what was skipped here, because I really enjoy the story. Overall, I'll give this about 7/10. Should be lowered, cause of production, but I'll give it, because I know with this story, and better animation, it'll be a hit.
