I see you've only watched the first season, so keep in mind that it glossed over a huge amount of details regarding Subaru and Rem's relationship. Emilia has slightly the priority because she was the first one he fell for, but Subaru loves them both pretty much equally. And he feels quite horrible about that, but those are his feelings right now. We'll se what will happen in the future. From what I've heard, in a more recent Q&A Tappei said that "he wasn't sure that Emilia would end with someone like Subaru". I don't know when did he say that, but if it's true it can mean literally anything. |

One of them even went out of their way to DM me about it (SmolEmilia#3361):  (Which I later reported and that got them kicked from the server. P.S I had to hide a spoiler from the screenshot.) For starters, I don't see why there are some people who just have to go out of their way to prove the character they like is the best (this goes both ways). It is literally a waste of time and gives a bad picture of your "fandom". Calling other characters "trash" just because you think so is not minding your own business, but rather is being extremely defensive for no reason and is uncalled for. And secondly, I can see why Emilia fans get very defensive about her (the ones that actually do). Since, statically speaking, Rem is more popular than Emilia, they get very offended about it. I personally believe the opposite would have happened if the tables were turned. But that doesn't justify calling other characters (Rem, in this case) "trash" and "should just go die". People like Rem, so what? You continue liking Emilia if you want. Why do you care that more people like Rem? In conclusion, like whatever character you want. Just don't force it on others. |

I think your observation pretty much only applies to swirlydragon or other extreme fans. These guys tend to give very poor, repetitive and exaggerated excuses to hate another character. E.g. "Rem is a selfish hypocrite who CalLeD EmILiA A wItCH In HeR bAcK" Even if it's true that she called Emilia by that name (detail mentioned in the novels, from before Rem actually started to know Emilia better), it doesn't make Rem an hypocrite or evil character like those goys try to say. Rem has quite the history with the Witch Cult so it only makes sense that she'd start with a very negative view Emilia, an half-elf. There are much more reasonable and actually valid arguments to defend both Rem and Emilia. In the end, it's mostly a preference. The overly-defensive reactions from Emilia go somewhat as follow: Almost every novel reader prefers Emilia over Rem, because she gets much more development than the blue-haired maid. Since Rem's personnal development was done by the start of arc 3 (second half of season 1), the novel readers find her somewhat shallow and uninteresting. Then some of the readers will spam that Emilia is best girl, not unlike every other waifu elitist. Then some of the readers will misunderstand some aspects, and we get the extremist Rem haters. But most readers will just start to prefer Emilia and defend their point when they feel like it. Then there's every anime-only who takes a screenshot of a cute moment and call the character in focus their waifu. There's no point in trying to argue with them, they never tried to have a proper argument to begin with. Despite that I don't really understand all the love toward Rem and would have prefered if Emilia was liked more, I don't really go around trashing on other people's tastes, and that's true for most Emilia fans. I do go and defend Emilia sometimes, in some of the more heated arguments or those that I feel aren't constructive or are 200% biased from extremist points of view, telling she has more development and explaining a bit of it so my whole point cannot be denied simply by "nO sHe DoEsn'T gEt DeVElOpment." I actually am kind of sick of seeing "Rem best girl" everywhere myself but it's just generic waifu talk and I wouldn't get triggered for that. |

As someone who has been part of Rezero community since 2016 and from what i have seen , There was huge amount of toxic Rem fans during 2016-late 2019 and since start of 2020 there is huge influx in amount of toxic Emilia fans probably due to her gaining more attention from her Frozen Bonds OVA , Season 2,etc. These OVAs and Season 2 helped increase her fanbase more but also caused increase in toxic peoples in her fanbase and it also seems most of the TOXIC Rem fans dropped Season 2 on ep 1 , I personally know many people who dropped series due to Rem not being there (I'm strictly talking about toxic Rem fan which were huge in number before season 2) this also caused decrease in toxicity in Rem's fanbase so like earlier during the 2016-2019 , it was like 75% Rem fans vs 25% Emilia fans and now its more like 55% Rem fans vs 45% Emilia fans (btw these percentages are out of toxic fanbase so what i mean is 75% and 25% of all toxic Rezero fans during 2016-2019 and similarly 55% vs 45% of all toxic rezero fans 2019 onwards).
