pointers become useful when you want to pass objects to functions

if the object is big, and you pass it by value(no pointer), then c++ will create a copy of that object, meaning twice the amount of memory will be used.
if you pass it by reference(by pointer), then c++ will use the original object, requiring no extra memory
both have their uses/advantages
