Are anime fans really that intolerant of extreme violence? I know that a lot of anime fans dislike rape, but violence doesn't seem to be much of an issue.

It's mostly about the degree of violence.
People exploding and throwing their guts everywhere is just not the same as a fighter getting his/her clothes torn and dirty.
Random soldiers dying to show how bad the threat is, is not the same as most of the cast massacred in the end.

I don't really care what happens in a show as long as it advances a story in some way.

Also I don't know about anyone else taste (too lazy to read all your profiles) or to search up the shows you mentioned (the only one I know mentioned here is beserk (which I have no problems with)) but If you are talking about ecchi or hentai count me out I don't have time to lose my soul or brain cells.

I think the correct term for "Violence Jack" would be "exploitation anime". Basically, it's a show about extreme violence, sex, rape and all other things we aren't allowed to show to children. It probably comes with a moral like "the MC can do whatever he wants, because he's the baddest motherfucker there is".

My fav logic is: Extreme violence, liters of blood, evisceration and massacre also fine, but showing a vagina, or (sometimes) boobs it's too much... O.o

I'm not saying I wanna see a lot of intim parts in animes, but this double standard is really hypocrat. We should censore both, or neither of them.

Especially don't understand the cenzureship, when you using age limit, like +18...

Basically, Japan has fucked-up laws. In case you doubt they're fucked up, it's those laws that resulted in tentacles and loli in hentai. Because they weren't allowed to draw penises and adult women, or something.

Moving on, because honestly in my case this is the first time I've seen fans react hostilely towards rape in anime. Actually I've seen more people complain about rape being a romantic plot device in anime (mainly ecchi and yaoi) and that fans seem to ignore this issue, but yeah, first time finding out fans are actually against such tropes.
I've seen lots of people complaining about violence and rape in videogame industry for example, in anime though, hardly anything noteworthy (the ones I'm talking about that are against plot device rape were mostly non-fans that were berating the fans).

I've never seen it myself but I remember a while back it was common for people to bring up Btoooom! and express there disgust for a rape scene in it. I think some just found it tasteless but a lot were just disgusted that an anime would include it.

I've seen a lot of complaints that anime (or another show) includes rape without giving it sufficient weight, or otherwise use it not in a critically-approved fashion, but I don't think I have seen people complaining that it was bad for them personally.

Probably because extreme violence and rape aren't societal norms.
Be thankful for the wisdom granted to you.

Yeah, I read about these idiotic laws, but I don't understand why they don't reform them? They aren't set in stone, like our basic law (we still modifi it in every year)

The laws have changed or something. But the damage has already been done.

Also, aren't all those penises censored? At least in hentai doujinshi they always are censored. Often in a totally silly way.

But Higurashi still has the comedy and moe, its not like you can compare it with shows that are gore all the time.

When i fell that the gore isnt well done (context based) than it just fells like a fandervice to gore fans, but when done right, it can make a series way better

i'm here to see fun stuff, to see relaxing stuff, to see great epic things, to see emotional things, not dark, insane, madness stuff. i've already seen enough of negative, dark stuff, things, in real life same like most anime fans/new anime fans. if you like it, why not watch it ? me ? no thank you, i'm here not for that. well, i would probably watched it if i really wanted to, but i'm not in that kind of mood so no thanks :D maybe sometimes.....

for rape, i usually go to hentai. but gore...probably something like "another"....it's rare to see good anime with gore elements in it nowdays. it only exist in old animes if i'm not wrong. i'm more into animation, or i'm very picky when it come to animation so yeah....

I love rape. I think a lot of people that hate it are usually feminists (cause most of the time the victim is female) or they are new to anime and only knew magical girls anime before and are then shocked/surprised to see such a thing.

It is normal. And it can be used to make a better/realistic atmosphere. Especially if the setting is medieval or medieval-fantasy-like.

Those armies there aren't just nice people. They have to fear death (cannon fodder a lot of them will die).

It is normal they go insane. They don't even know if they will make it back alive to their wife. They are hungry. Bad food.

So I like it if they pillage a village and rape the girls there. Feels more authentic than the nice guys that are just normal like normal worker in our peaceful world. (That in fact feels weird and is worse then. Not realistic.)

@Flannan

Please don't lump Higurashi in with harem anime :o it is a horror/psychological show not a harem.

I think some people are just uncomfortable with the subject matter or have a past trauma with extreme violence/rape which causes an aversion to it. Then there are also SJW who try to make everything a morality issue when we are watching 2D fictional characters because god forbid a show tries to explore a real subject matter assuming it is done in a non-exploitative way just to be edgy.

I know it. Now. After I've watched one arc of it.
But it sure looked like a harem or slice of life at first. Then things slowly slipped to hell.
The rest of my examples in that sentence are the same - more than meets the eye.
