Increasingly, I'm only discovering romance anime which makes me want to heave repeatedly into a pail or set fire to my computer.

Would you kindly recommend me some romance anime that isn't horrendous?

By this, I mean strong main characters. And heavy on the romance without being cheesy.

Some of my favourites include:

Ouran High School Host Club
Maid Sama!
Howl's Moving Castle
Yamato Nadeshiko Shichi Henge

Thanks a bunch!

I've previously tried School Days but bailed after the first episode because I found it a bit...lacking. I might give it a longer test run, seeing as it has been recommended so many times.

I would recommand the movie Toki wo Kakeru shoujo

For me, most of the romance anime are not so good because of the main girl and/or because of the reverse harem who almost never end by a choice!
I think one is different "Hanasakeru Seishounen". I didn't watched it yet, but a friend who don't like reverse harem really like it and recommend it to me! The first episodes seems "reverse harem only anime" (new guys every episode...) but it has a good story!
Escaflowne (TV and movie) are also good romance, but at least for the TV series it's not "really" the main point... still one of my favorite romance anime!
Kimi ni Todoke (veryyyy slooooowwww but cute romance)

The other I remember:
Kare kano (but... some "special" episodes)
Inu x Boku SS
Nana (longer, more than 1 couple, more adult since it's josei)
Paradise Kiss (also josei, 13ep)
Lovely Complex (if you can stand crying baby in love, take time but it's a cute romance)
Ayashi no Ceres
Fushigi Yuugi
B gata H Kei (some ecchi/comedy but cute romance for a shounen)
RDG: Red Data Girl (you already watch this one)
Kokoro Connect (seems to have romance, I didn't finish it yet)
Versailles no Bara (old but a lot of people said it's a good romance anime)

It seems you don't mind shounen-ai so you can try Junjo romantica and Sekaiichi Hatsukoi... a lot of couples so you can find some you like! Or Gakuen Heaven (I find this one horrible but at least there is an ending for a reverse harem shounen-ai it's not often!)

[EDIT] I think you should forget School Days!!!

Really? Really? She lists shoujo and THIS is what you suggest for her?

Most of this contains smut AND IS FOR GUYS and good lord don't watch School Days. They are trolling you.

I think you would really really enjoy Kimi ni Todoke. Very sweet and very pretty. Second season gets difficult to watch however.

Kuragehime is also fantastic and considering you liked Wallflower and Ouran you will LOVE Kuragehime.

As for Lovely Complex, it's not so bad ^^ maybe better to watch when doing something else (like eating, drawing, knitting... ^o^)

@amberleh --> I'm agree with you, except for "Ookami to Koushinryou" ( = Spice and Wolf) which is a good anime for romance! with more adult feeling!

It takes time to fill the list! Even now, after few years filling my animelist (my manga list is toooo far from being complete) I still find some old anime I forgot to add!

You can also use the "recommendations" for the main page of the anime you like! It's not always accurate but can still help!

I really wouldn't recommend Spice & Wolf seeing how the romance elements in the series are subtle, though you can definitely see the chemistry between Lawerence & Holo but nothing really happens, it's enjoyable though.

I don't see where she asked for shoujo anime exclusively.

I suggest:

Hotarubi no Mori e - It's really sweet and I enjoyed it. It's not a male directed anime it could go either way really, but it's very nice and you'd probably enjoy it.
I agree about Kokoro Connect, I really enjoyed it and the characters were all fairly interesting.
NHK ni Youkoso! - It's a fantastic anime, it actually made me re-evaluate etc. and got me back on the right track. It has some romance in it but the main feature of the anime is the philosophical journey you undertake yourself while you watch it.
Toradora! - It was one of the first anime I watched and I truly did/do adore it, for me it's an excellent cross of comedy, character development and romance. That said, I can see how it could be more for a male audience and that it might not be your cup of tea.
Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun - I really enjoyed it and I found that surprising as shoujo isn't typically my thing. I'd recommend it, the comedy is quite engaging.

I hope that helped, if you enjoy any that I recommended feel to pm for more.
Hachikuji: Araragi-san, you don't look even the least bit apologetic. You should at least say something after touching a girl's delicate chest!

Sweet? It was borderline misogynistic, Saber was an excellent character and a famous warrior and the protagonist treated her as if she were a little girl. I can't begin to convey the degree of loathing I feel for that anime. Fate/Zero was magnificent and the only thing that stopped Fate/Stay night from being great was the moronic protagonist. "People die if they are killed." *Facepalm to infinity*

I think everything's been mentioned LOL! (so nice to see someone remember Ashita no Nadja :) - though I still have to finish it).

Will just add - Hana Yori Dango. Falls into a lot of cliches of shoujo (love triangles, wavering/indecisive heroine, rich guy poor girl etc). And the art/animation can not compete with today's stuff (probably bad even for it's time). But bugger it - it's a classic. And I still love it (you do get kinda sucked into watching it).

And Full Moon wo Sagashite.

LOL wow. Some of what you've written in this thread makes it almost seem look like you read my mind and then wrote down what I was thinking. I haven't finished FSN yet, but I also was quite annoyed by the protagonist.

Also, I'm not the biggest shoujo fan either, but from what I've watched of Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun it seems pretty good, so I second that.

As for my own recommendation for the op, I don't think anyone recommended Shingetsutan Tsukihime yet (relationship actually gets pretty far in this one). Also, if you're interested in a movie, I really liked Toaru Hikuushi e no Tsuioku. Not sure if these are my favorite of ALL TIME though...that's not too easy to decide.
