Man, this anime really has some depressing moments for kids. Oscar is one such example just seeing how the world unfolded before his eyes.

At least we did get his character origins and how became the explosive mage. This episode had some prominent mages so he's another example of character evolution from what he was before to what he is now.

One of the best episodes of this show so far. Completely disagree with people complaining about a backstory flashback in the penultimate ep. Clearly Oscar is being set up as some sort of foil to Ryo(water and fire), I presume he’ll play a big role in the next arc in the LN.. makes sense they would establish things today so we actually know and care about him, PLUS it explains why he reacted the way he did to Nils saving Fiona at the end.

Oscar’s backstory was so tragic, but how do you get pulled up on by the SAME group of bandits TWICE(probably 3 times because I’m sure Boskona is behind this one)? The fact he didn’t even get to say goodbye to his parents, it’s just a sudden, brutal death for both of them, no last words or gasps for air pleading with him to run.. just cut down cruelly like a dog. If that’s not bad enough, then you find another home with the elder and that one gets raided too. It’s almost like he’s a bad luck charm at this point 😭

I was so worried that Fiona was gonna die, but thankfully she seems ok. I’m worried about Nils no way he could hold off Oscar, so is Ryo gonna show up and give us our first fight between Fire and Water? For the first time, I’m kinda hype for the next water magician episode.

I get that backstories are important for character development but we are on ep 11 and it was half of the episode, i feel like this is way too late to be showing this. I feel like anime nowadays waste 8 episodes or more not advancing the plot and then cram everything in at the last....just my thoughts after finishing this episode.

Goddamn, Oscar’s had such a terrible life. Imagine losing so many people in your early years, and taking damage like he did, and still surviving. I can't believe he hasn't lost his mind with such physical and psychological wounds. I hope Ryo shows up fast because I don't think Oscar is in his right mind at the moment. It looks like he’s about to lose his shit when Ryo’s roommates just saved the princess.

@Kyotofox My sentiments exactly. It feels like 2/3 of this episode was needless filler. It's especially egregious as the last episode ended on a cliffhanger with the garden party getting attacked and now we've wasted half an episode on a flashback for a side character and another couple of minutes on a lame discussion between guild representatives that wasn't particluarly interesting and got nowhere.

Tbh Oscar's past was so clichè that the whole story told in the episode should have lasted 5 mins, so they could have show us more, like Ryo for example who is always absent, like a secondary character. It's clear they just want to fill the 20 minutes time with crappy stuff none cares about.

I don't mind that Ryo arrive late, overpowered hero always arrive late after all. But what I'm concern is the high death rate even if it happen a long time ago in Oscar's childhood, it's what prevent me from liking this anime.

They can give Pig empire's premier magician all the backstory they want, but I'm not going to shed a tear when our boy drops an ice wall on him for attacking his friends.

is there any LN reader? I want to see if it makes more sense and if Ryo is actually part of the book or not.

I agree with you all. Feel way too late to have a backstory. This need 24 episodes really as I feel we barely scratch the surface.

This plot/anime has some of the worst direction I’ve seen and it is absolutely killing a potentially good story….which is killing me. Am I supposed to care about the inferno magician and princess cause the show hasn’t made me care one lick yet and then they give a half-episode backstory dump that was cliche as heck. Plus, how the heck did he survive that stab wound??? Abel is talking. Ryo is god knows where…a “gag” that’s becoming more and more unfunny when it wasn’t very amusing to begin with. And room 10 is back….and I wish they weren’t.
There’s a lot of characters and a lot of plot lines but none of them have been well developed. Author should have focused on quality over quantity.

Weakest episode so far imo.
Personally, I didn't care for the backstory of that character, and it took 17 minutes for the story to progress, and even that was incredibly slow. 24 minutes and the story barely progressed a couple of minutes

Incoming misunderstanding.
And if I had to predict what happens next...Oscar will attack them in rage and Ryo will have to -literally- water calm him down.

And I agree with most others. That backstory chunk in the beginning was a little TOO long...if it was only half the length the episode might've actually gotten somewhere but it just result in a horrible filler-like ep.

How to put it… I wouldn’t really know what to think about this episode. It was fine. Full of weird stuff, like wolves eating humans. Makes sense, they’re even drawn to the smell of blood. Wolves eat humans, everybody knows that. Wolves hate water, as if they’d melt if they fell into it. Logical. Bandits who don’t actually bandit anything. They know perfectly well, in fact, that by killing villagers and spilling blood, they’ll attract wolves. But anyway, bandits who don’t bandit anything. Then the bandit who decided he was going to screw up that damn kid’s life. Logical too, as everyone knows. Otherwise, the episode was alright.
Then… I see what the screenwriter, or the writer, I don’t know, who decided to wrap up this season in that way. Make Mr. Fire fight Mr. Water. Okay, but why? It’s really just creating a shitty misunderstanding to force the final battle. Why though? xD

Ah, not very fun, but I don’t agree with us spending our time in a seasonal anime like this, such a short anime, wasting it telling the story of a damn character we might not even see again in the future! Okay, it’s setting up some kind of narrative effect so we understand why the character is going to act a certain way in the episode, but 17 minutes?!

The main character is the best-developed side character in the whole story. xD

To be honest, I wasn't a big fan of this episode. I understand that it's beneficial to provide some backstory for the viewers, but as many people have noted, it is way too late in the show to dedicate half an episode to this. Obviously, the end is leading up to a big crescendo for the final episode, but I feel that it could've been done in a better way.

probably because the animation
Usually only goes downhill as a show goes on and this show is only one frame away from just being a slide show. so they probably decided it would be better to take some time and work on it.

That felt like nothing happened because of all the random flashback backstory for some new character.

At first I thought the flashbacks were somehow to Abel's childhood or something (and that maybe he changed his name from Oscar after a trauma-ridden origin story), but it was apparently just this new random guy...?

It seemed like it was getting interesting, but then so random and 🤷

I guess next episode (if things are at least connected) this new bandit guy introduced in Oscar's flashbacks will make an appearance.

@GooseHybrid I'm betting that the bandit we saw is going to be completely unrelated to the last episode. They just want to give reason for Oscar to act irresponsibly and attack Room 10 so Ryo comes and saves them. So I think the last episode will be Ryo vs Oscar.

That's how I feel. We only met Oscar last episode so I don't think it really warrants a backstory.

@Moppit Ah 😬 Maybe that too, and sounds equally likely.

I did laugh out loud though thinking if they introduced these new characters and their lifelong beef (in the penultimate episode) before then throwing it away instantly.

No words... The story is all over the place, I saw the "main character" for 3 seconds. It has become a complete joke at this point. I get that you need to get a premise on each character, but its episode 11 and it feels like nothing has happened since episode 3. Turkey the bowling anime is far better story than this.

This anime has had strange pacing from the start. Since around episode 4, the biggest disappointment has been the noticeable drop in animation quality. This episode was especially bad, to the point where it distracted me from the story. The plot itself, while somewhat misplaced, was at least more engaging than some of the earlier ones. For example, the storylines centered on the adventurers, who were so forgettable I couldn’t name a single one.

At first, I was willing to tolerate Ryo’s absence, hoping that the world-building and other characters would make up for it, but that never happened. He remains the most interesting character in the series, yet he’s been reduced to little more than a side character. Overall, this anime has left me both disappointed and confused about what it’s trying to accomplish.

Edit: grammar and flow

Overlord does that a lot. Introduce someone new. You learn a little bit of their background and what they want to do in the future, for them to die the next episode.

Decent episode. While Oscar’s tragic backstory is interesting, this is already the second-to-last episode and it felt unnecessary—they wasted too much time on flashbacks.

At least Ryou’s teammates finally had a battle without him freezing the enemy right away.

Don’t tell me that clumsy Oscar is going to attack Ryou’s friends by mistake, and Ryou will have to fight him. Well, at least it looks like the season will end with some action.

Literally just wanted to reiterate this point. Like why at episode 11/12 is half of an episode being wasted an a backstory for a side character. Like surely there’s better and more important things that could have taken up screen time

Ah yes... The Water Magician, the show that will do ANYTHING BUT follow the WATER MAGICIAN. 90% of this show is spent on side characters and it is wild.

Why would he think the boys are after the princess when there's two dead people than look like the attackers from the manor dead next to them? Think brah

How are you gonna have a filler episode when its the SECOND TO LAST EPISODE... How has the main character of the show only had prolly less than 50% screen time in all 11 episodes combined like bruhhh, and with how the put the plot this episode the next and final episode of this season has nothing for Ryou to do... this is meant to be "the water magician"... not "the water magician is a side character in his own story"

This episode, and the season finale only re-enforces the feeling I had after watching the last episode and I quoted the movie On the Waterfront:

You don't understand. I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I coulda been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am, let's face it.

This quote fits this series like a glove!

So they just inserted a cliche backstory literally in the middle of rising action and just killed the hype. The first 3/4 of this episode is literally what you would see in the first 5 episode not in ep 11 of a 12 ep season. Extremely disappointed, I was able to bare with the lowering quality of animation but this episode alone made me drop my score. I would still watch the finale but this anime is probably one of the worst of this season which is a shame because i thought this would be the hidden gem.
