This is a very touchy subject on here, so I'm going to do it nice and carefully and break it into sections.

Plot

The plot is the definite best part of the show. It starts really strong. Makise Kurisu is dead, and Okabe has a time machine. After that it becomes a slice of life / almost harem with time traveling text messages mixed in. It becomes a show where Okabe takes requests from several attractive females, it's pretty much a harem at that point. It's very relevant to the story however, as this is a necessary part of the story, and is the cause of the problem in the first place. Episode 12 is where things kick off. We see the payoff of sitting through 10 filler but not really filler episodes. This episode sets the tone for the rest of the series. It becomes a faux-groundhog day scenario. Mayuri dies, he always loses. This isn't the interesting part. We know Mayuri is going to die every time. The interesting part here is Okabe. We slowly see his mind degrade and have an impact on the things he does. An interesting thing that they cut from the anime was that in the VN he considers raping Suzuha because he would just time loop back anyway. The plot gets consistently better until he finally realizes how to keep Mayuri alive. Here's where the show crashes and burns. It actually becomes a harem. Some of the characters get their own lovey-dovey side episode with Okabe. Why? It's necessary for the anime, but they could have not made them all in love with Okabe. On to the final arc, this is the climax. We see everything the show has led up to. We find out who Suzuha is, and why she's there. Okabe realizes that nothing of this will ever happen and decides to go along with it anyway. Okabe shows his undying devotion to a girl he barely knows and decides to almost die because of her. He wins in the end.

Characters

The weak point of the show.

Okabe - Okabe is a good character. He really develops throughout the series. I explained a bit in the plot section so I won't go too deep into it.

Kurisu - A very flat character. She has 4 traits : Tsundere, daddy issues, likes science, and is from America. She doesn't develop throughout the series, and ultimately only warms up to Okabe, and that's it.

Mayuri - What character? She's Okabe's childhood friend and a plot device

Feyris and Ruka - These can be grouped together. They are both there to fill space and make things harder for Okabe. That's their only reason to exist.

Moeka - Serves an actual purpose. Goes to show Okabe that not everyone is nice and people will take advantage of you and what you can provide for their own purposes. She's the second best character in the show.

Suzuha - Another good character. She's a rebel from the future, and comes back to save her world. She's there to assist Okabe in his mission, and isn't explored much as a character.

Final thoughts

The show is good. It's really good. However, it shouldn't be regarded as a masterpiece, and really only get's an 8/10 from me. It has a great story at times, but it's inconsistent, has flat characters, and is very very clearly based off of a VN and has harem elements.

This is the problem with hardcore fans, when it comes to someone giving a genuine good criticism and breakdown they just go “not reading all that you’re wrong” and don’t even bother giving a good counter argument. It’s really damn immature. This is coming from someone who rated it a 10/10 and consider it one of my favourite anime ever

I don't agree, no doubt plot is one of the few series to handle time-travel with complex plot this good, Moeka is not good as Kurisu, she does so much to make everything clear to everyone, and Okabe got to the very end thanks to the help she gave him, it is a crucial character and her personality has some of stereotype yes, but an elaborated structure inside her.
I saw 156 series, and this is 1 of the 3 series I gave 10/10
Totally deserved

The arguments the OP gave were not arguments, they were rhetorical nonsense that is so subjective it can't even be considered valid. Good criticism would be to criticize specific aspects of a show and not general ideas about the plot and characters. Stuff like "having harem elements" as the OP puts it are simple preferences, you can't possibly acknowledge preferences as arguments.

It absolutely is valid, what op stated is their opinion. The whole point of a discussion is to have different opinions clashing and to discuss each one. Everything regarding one’s opinion towards a show will almost always be subjective, what one likes another won’t. Expecting them to only point out objectively wrong things is just stupid. OP points out that the weakest point of the shows is its characters and then goes on to break down each relevant character to the plot and why they think so. THAT’S a good form of criticism. Just because you may not agree with what they say doesn’t make it any less invalid.

Great story, flat stereotype character, that's what stein's gate is, and I have seen complaints about characters being bad in some of the creator's other adaptations, so I'm just gonna assume he is not very good at that

Your logic invalidates this thread even more. If everything is subjective then there's no discussion to be had here, since those who disagree with the OP are also only stating a subjective opinion. Therefore everything written in the OP should be instead written as a review for the anime.

Congratulations you’re learning the whole point of a discussion, it’s OPINION vs OPINION. When it comes to discussing a damn show then yeah it prolly is pointless objectively, but it’s fun to argue your side against others and get a proper argument back. Thats my whole point with my original comment. Rather than coming back with a proper argument to the OP, they simply replied “not reading show’s 10/10” which is just a stupid brainless response.

OP's TL;DR: Slice of Life is bad! Harem is bad! Anything with such elements is bad! VN adaptation can't be good!

These are just plain subjective preferences that can't be used as an argument or criticism.

Now, S;G is indeed weak on characters. Okabe is the most well developed character and Mayuri the least. This is where I think Steins;Gate 0 did the work. It added more dimensions in every character, including the new ones.

Steins;Gate is praised for its overall story and character in the handful of 24 episodes. It's compact and well-rounded, conceptually consistent and self-aware. Of course it has down sides as it never was a complete adaptation of the VN.

In a fruitful discussion everyone is willing to listen and have a counterargument. When no one's willing to listen then there's no point. Again, this would be better as a review, not a thread.

8/10 is the objective value for every good show. To be 9 or 10 is needed a component of subjective taste. That's why Steins Gate or full metal alchemist can be seen as potential 10 and they don't steal anything being in the first positions. Personally i gave 8 to steins gate but i really love it. I've seen it twice and i think it's the best visual novel adaption (very difficult)

I disagree with your accusations that the characters are flat outside of kurisu (who is as 2D as they get) however she doesn't need much depth as it's her chemistry with okabe that warrants her existence. The rest of the cast are far more nuisanced, and you can tell on rewatch just how internally broken they are, until the stiens gate timeline is reached. Outside of that pretty good breakdown!

Dividing an anime up into parts, giving each a score, and then using some imaginary formula to calculate an overall rating, is dumb. People like anime because of the way it makes them feel. It's art. You don't judge paintings like that, so you shouldn't judge anime that way either. Stein's Gate is a masterpiece because of its effect on people. A story that's "academically" perfect, but doesn't have a strong emotional impact, isn't worth anything.

Steins;Gate is the pinnacle of anime. If you think differently, it's painfully clear you lack the refined taste and intellectual depth to appreciate true brilliance. The intricacies of its plot, the depth of its characters, and the masterful storytelling are far beyond your limited comprehension. It's not just an anime; it's a work of art that sets the standard for the entire medium. Dismissing it only highlights your ignorance and inability to recognize what makes anime truly exceptional.

While I immerse myself in thought-provoking masterpieces, you're obsessing over finding flaws in brilliance, like a pseudo-intellectual desperately clinging to mediocre drivel. It's almost pitiable how you try to mask your lack of understanding with baseless critiques. Keep trying to sound smart while I enjoy the true heights of anime excellence.

I never comment on anything on this site but I felt the need to do it here. Steins;Gate is a 10/10 show all around. It’s not flawless, but it’s earned it.

The funniest thing to me is that you think Steins;Gate has flat characters. Absolute madness

yeah steins gate is definitely not a top 5 anime or whatever placement it has here. Also it's really telling that all of the people who disagree don't have any arguments and just say "didn't read, steins gate is 10/10"

@PaperCutAssassin Funny that you think it is a "copypasta" just because you have the reading comprehension of a sixth grader.

"Okabe has a harem" the true ending is him ending up with Kurisu, the other routes in the vn just expand other characters conflicts with okabe and the okabes in these endings also end up with one girl anyways.

"Kurisu is bland and idk why she ended up with okabe" She helped okabe get back his motivation and overall carried everything from making the dmail to helping okabe getting back to the original timeline. He depended on her a lot in hundreds of loops and Kurisu is the only girl can keep up with his science interests

i don't see how harem subtext is a huge problem, i even prefer that to actual harems. it most definitely is as good as the rating suggests compared to other anime.
