I would say it is already a classic because it’s one of the most famout anime ever. Even many people who don’t watch anime at all have heard of death note.

It had a large cultural impact, atleast in the West, so I would say it’s a classic

the first 3rd is the best anime of all time. the second 3rd is fine. the last 3rd of the series is terrible, aside from the final episode. people only consider it a classic because of those first 12 episodes.

I watched it on Youtube years ago and I really like how uniwue and remarkable as it is. It deserves every bit of success it has. For those who know that DN is not just L vs. Light, I don't think that the second part is, by no means, inferior to its first part. Plus the designs and the art very smooth. 10/10 for everything.

The number of people who watch anime has been constantly rising but most of these new fans are still aware of what death note is so that qualifies it as a classic in my book.

It’s already a classic if you ask me. It’s already been out for almost 15 years this October, which IMO constitutes whether an anime can be considered a classic or not since so much time has past. It’s still being talked about to this day and many people have sited it as inspiration and even references. it’s also massively praised by critics and fans alike.

I mean, it has over 258K votes and 9.0 rating on IMDb (2nd highest anime has 238K "Attack on Titan"). I'd say it's one of the classics, even if you don't like it, you can't deny its impact on pop-culture.

Yes, it is. Most of people expect anime to be something that has only over the top action, that's because of popularity of shows like dragon ball . When they watch Death Note they realise anime is more than dbz, naruto, one piece etc etc.

The only bad thing about death note was its rushed ending. Seemed like the writer was confused himself on how to end it
I love Monogatari Series

I'm not sure about classic. It IS really good, specially the first half, but there's a little something missing to call it a classic.

It's one of the best gateway series to introduce someone to anime though. So there's that.

It's not a classic but THE classic in anime community. Specifically the animé community, not general audience

Well idk why whenever I think of classics I think of old anime like Dragon Ball, Fist of the North Star, Saint Seiya, and other old ones. So I don’t really consider it a classic.

Death Note is like the first cup of Anime culture for many people. It's quite popular and an awesome anime as well as a Manga. So declaring it a classic wouldn't be unwise

What rock are you living under, my dude? It’s already a classic. Literally the most popular anime on MAL. A lot of people say it was their first anime, including me, and recommend it to all their friend who want to get into anime.

Pretty sure it's already a classic

-One of the most popular anime ever
-Has a very nice reputation in the west and influenced otaku culture heavily when it came out
-It's 15 years old yet remembered well to this day
-Nothing really replaced it

Seems like a classic to me
I don't speak English that much, so please cut me some slack

It's neither overrated nor underrated. Absolutely the best anime u can watch with less number of Episodes. Delivers stuff and it's best. We can definitely say it's a classic anime and will be remembered forever

I mean I think it is, but death note isn't something I'd try to recommend to somebody that wanted to get into it. They'd probably think it's stupid as hell some dude is writing names in a book since they lack a creative imagination.

Didn't the community considered those anime classics who were consistent in quality throughout the series like Evangelion and not solely on popularity? The second half was despised by the majority? So how is it a classic now?By that logic,My hero academia is a classic because those who don't watch anime also know Mha.
The meaning of classic is really changed over the years.

I think the middle chunk of death note was still pretty damn good, and even the last chunk was far from terrible, it had some issues with Near and Mello and could have fleshed them out a little better but it was far from terrible

I would say so its got pretty good character writing, it's got interesting themes, a clever plot, and probably some of the best direction in anime, its still one of my go to series to recommend to someone new to anime and it's still top 15 or so for me

I personally think it’s absolutely terrible.
