Should I read manga? Is it worth reading even if there's anime of it and why? |

Yes. Some series never get anime adaptations, or adaptations that are bad. Amazing manga that have no adaptations include: Berserk Vagabond Vinland Saga Some manga get adaptations up to a point, but you're going to have to read the rest, like with Magi. |

manga can have a different story compared to the anime adaptation and fix any flaws the anime version may have. some manga will never get an anime adaptation, such as Yotsuba, or never get a sequel such as Nichijou. |

If you want to see someone's artistic vision before it's been translated by production staffers YES. If you're in to long format stories that have only been briefly touched on by adaptations YES. Often you will be really into a 12 episode series and find out there's a 20 volume Manga behind it where the Anime only covered the first 4. |

Some manga are simply too great to ever get equally good anime adaptations. Berserk is the best example of that, even though the 1997 anime is great and definitely worth a watch. |

All the points of the other posters are good, but I think what makes manga distinct is that it can have different styles of storytelling that anime can't do (or if it tries to it's really cringe-like). Famous examples include Blame! and Vagabond. Some stories just fit into one format more than any other. However, it's really up to you to decide what format for a story you think would be better. Normally I just read a description of an anime/manga, and on the spot I decide on what format I think I would enjoy more. For example, I think the new Inuyashiki anime adaptation will pale in comparison to the manga even though I haven't read it, but I also think that One Punch Man Season 2, when it comes out, will be infinitely times better than the manga. Also, the argument that the source material is "better" because the adaptation had a slightly different storyline is totally invalid. Different doesn't mean bad. Same doesn't mean good. Don't decide whether to watch or read it based on that. Find reasons for the difference in quality, and if you can't, then decide. |

I think that is up to you, if you like to read and that kind of stuffs so you will probably find reading a manga as good or even better than watching its anime, but, if you are not the reading type you may not enjoy as much as you would enjoy its anime even if you can continue with the story if you are not enjoying it you wont like it. So my advice? give it a try, if you see you can be hours and hours just reading and having fun of it the do it, if you cant, just keep watching anime, as I said, its matter of taste. |

Since some manga seriously surpass the anime adaptation, I'd recommend it. Manga has more creative freedom to extend upon its premise in comparison to anime because anime is primarily based on marketing and will omit things from the source material for pandering or adaptation distillations sake. I read 20+ volumes of some series & I honestly don't regret it for the ones I've made it that far in. Also, manga is not that hard to read if you're a fast reader, either, it's basically a bunch of still illustrations and word bubbles on a page, and I as a relatively "social" reader I guess you can say get through a manga volume or chapter relatively fast in comparison to an anime episode. Thus, I'd say give it a whirl, if it's not your thing it's not your thing. I started off on manga and transitioned into anime. |

For sure. I personally prefer manga over anime majority of the time. And sometimes the anime just doesn't give the manga justice or the anime ends too early with too much story left out leaving you to wait for season 2. |

Well, it's sometimes inconvenient to watch anime when you're alone. Also, most masterpieces come from manga, because when a manga is adapted into an anime, it usually decreases in quality. |

As someone who only started reading manga in the last few months, I would say yes. I can't say anything about the ones with adaptations, but I've found many I've enjoyed and am enjoying which probably won't get adapted anytime soon. |

One word (hells) yeah! Manga is awesome. There's so much great content that isn't made into anime, and lot's of botched anime hail from pretty decent manga. |

It depends i guess. I know people who watch a lot of anime but doesn't read manga. I read a lot of manga and watch a very few anime, mostly because i like to appreciate the art from the original source and it has more content to offer than the adaptations (most of the times). |

Many anime series don't even adapt the full story of the manga(e.g. Kannagi). Some manga adaptations of anime have extra story not seen in the original(e.g. 5cm per second). So yes, why not? |

It does depend on the anime/manga. I would definitely read a manga that the anime adapted poorly. Deadman Wonderland is my favorite manga series however the anime messed up badly. |

I've not read much manga , but there's usually: A: Less filler B: More story C: Amazing manga without adaptations D: Arcs or chapters featured in the manga that the anime never adapted E: There's also more good manga than good anime , generally due to the fact there's more manga in general. I recommend 'The Promised Neverland' for a good ongoing manga. I also recommend 'Angel Densetsu' as a pretty funny finished manga. So yeah , manga is pretty cool. |

I would personally recommend it as something to give you a break from watching multiple episodes of anime in one evening or something. It's also nice to have a physical copy of something. To me it makes it more special. Hope you enjoy it as much as I am. I'm kinda new to it too so if you want any recommendations let me know. |

Yes, it is very worth reading manga. Here are some reasons why... 1. You can read it basically anywhere and put it down when you need to do something. No need to stop an episode when you are halfway through it, just close your manga reading app! 2. There are some great manga out there that don't have any anime adaptations and probably never will. 3. There are way more manga out there to read than anime to watch 4. The manga versions of anime are typically better than the anime version (excluding the Shinsekai Yori manga...) |

JUST DO IT There are some things that can be experienced in only one medium and if you have enough time, you should definitely give every medium of entertainment a shot. In the case of manga, you have Oyasumi Pupun, Vagabond, Otoyomegatari, Kokou no Hito, Kakukaku Shikajika, etc. I hope you do give them a read at some point and see for yourself how these works works best in a manga format. Cheers~ |

Well it depends if you prefer reading comics. Sometimes I prefer anime to the manga. I read more manga than watching anime because there are lots of manga that are great. If only they could turn into an anime, seeing them in colour and hearing the characters coming to life. I like to read manga as well, I would be able to see the details (not so much in anime), there are side stories and how the author got their inspiration. Seeing extra details in manga is cool for me. |

gecokid said: Should I read manga? Is it worth reading even if there's anime of it and why? Short awnser: YES! About 1/3 of the seasonal anime gets only produced to push the sales of the manga. It does not matter if the show was popular or an economic success in itself, or that a second season would be an economic success to. The goal was to push the manga sales in JP, and you are forced to read the manga if you wanna know the conclusion. No second season EVAr! And then, there are some shows that are not based on a manga(whatcha call thoose=? original somethingsmthg?), but if they´re successfull, they will get a Manga-Adaptation to continue the story. Basicly it comes down to this: If an Anime-Show is good, there is an Manga to it! But not necessarily the other way around. A good Manga does not need an Anime-Adaptation to push it sales, and some Mangaka fear that an bad adaptation might alienate their fans, for little to no gain for themself. I wasn´t a big manga reader untill recently...Untill KNK; koe no katachi: a silent voice Boi, am I happy I did not ruin the manga for me, by watching the movie. You are missing koe no katachi on your AnimeList, so your first step into the manga world should be KNK. Heh, I started this manga just a few days ago... Just hear me out: In my 31 years of excistence on this planet I read about 1000 books - the things without pictures, stared tenthousends of hours into a TV and got "/played 346days" on an certain MMO. And yet, nothing came close to the value of entertaiment I got out of koe no katachi. What are you waiting for, go read koe no katachi, right now! Chapter one might not be that intresting, but once you reached the plot...omg...Can´t stop fangasm... A Manga is the perfect medium to portray that kind of story, it fits perfectly! Don´t spoil the manga by watching the movie, go read koe no katachi right now! 11101101988 said: if you want any recommendations let me know. koe no katachi; a silent voice Iam happy, that enough people did throw the movie AND the manga at me. It did took more than one friend to convince me to give it a try, and boi, it was worth it! Maybe I do fangasm too much, or the manga is already considered old=2013 - common people, do I get a second one to push for KNK? @11101101988, forget the movie, go read the manga(missing on your list) gecokid said: What do you mean “manga reading app” can you give some examples. Thanks. I go with "Perfect Viewer" (link to playstore) over everything else... ok,gotta admit, I need to test some of the mentions above. What´s good about PV is the customization avaible for the user. You got a basic grid on your touchscreen, highly customizable! That makes for a very fluid reading, you get everything you will EVER need within one touch. In my case, that are 11 touchscreen grids + 5 hardware keys(volume up/down etc), and every single one does allow for 3 commands(short press, long and very long press). Totally 48 avaible keybinds within the range of one finger. It was the highly customizable part that sold it to me...ah yeah, PV is 100% free and without ads. I double use PV as MangaReader/EbookReader. And the transition between; reading direction leftright/rightleft, screen orientation, fit to width/high, zoom level etc. etc. etc. was never easier/faster before. If there is a downside, than that PV is not naturally connected to the MAL API. So you have to do your MangaUpdates on the MALwebsite, or use Pocket MAL Again, I need to check on some mentions above(F.E. never heard of MangaRock, but I did reject MangaReader for whatever reason I can´t rmb). Bonus-App would be MangaDLR A MangaReader, MangaDownloader, and MAL-API connection in one App. But I did not like the reader part of the app, does not fit me. In total, I use 3 apps, every one dedicated to their purpose. MangaDLR as downloader(duh), PervectViewer to read, and PocketMAL for list-updates. I have the intense urge to run across the streets and throw koe no katachi at random people, and yell "READ IT! READ IT! WAAAAAAARGHGRR!" But for now Iam fine with reading the last few chapters day by day, and very slowly let it slip into completion...Damnit, I have already buyers remorse, only a handfull of chapters left, and I have no idea what to do once it´s finished :( |

A lot of anime end up never actually finishing the story or end up with some sort of anime original ending. Would say it's definitely worth reading manga as there are thousands of great manga out there that never had anime adaptions. There's are some amazing manga out there but had a bad anime adaptation. An example would be Rosario+Vampire I refuse to ever watch that adaption as the anime turned into a generic garbage harem well the manga actually has pretty good story. |

You have Hellsing Ultimate in your favorite series. I think Hellsing works better as a manga since Ultimate has pretty mediocre animation that doesn't sell the action as well as it should. |
